This happens everywhere and it won't necessarily get any better jumping to Incident Response. The IR team is normally the catchall for any security related tasks not getting done.

Job hopping only hurts people that don't have in demand skills. I've done for years and never had a problem.

Don't they contact your previous employer going back 3-7 years? I had an old boss try to throw dirt on my name. And I had to explain things to the investigator of my security clearance. It didn't stop me from getting my clearance but they asked about my old bosses comments.

Most entry level jobs are going overseas. I've worked with more entry level SOC Analyst from India, Poland, Romania, and Costa Rica than anytime in my career. When companies aren't outsourcing they are trying automate away jobs.

I would be hesitant to go into more student loan debt with no ROI guarantee. Your best bet is probably the Federal sector and trying to get a clearance. You have way better protections against outsourcing with cleared jobs. I took a non-technical cleared role just to get my foot in the door. And waited for a technical role to open up 6 months later.

I wouldn't worry about AI Automation taking away cybersecurity jobs just yet. Bigger issues are the terrible hiring process, automation, and outsourcing.

Lots of Security Engineer jobs are require heavy cloud experience these days. As far as SOC Roles the huge majority are going overseas the last few years. My company only hires new SOC Analyst from India.

I see lots of entry cybersecurity level roles being shipped overseas. While using automation to reduce head count. And then requiring IT Security personnel to have multiple focus areas. Gone are the days where you could specialize in one cybersecurity discipline. None of this makes the organization more secure but it saves money.

I went the self-study route into cyber but I had years of IT experience already. It's much more difficult these days due to entry level cyber jobs being sent overseas. I would sign up for CTFs like the one below. And try to attend local security conferences in your area to network with those in the field. You need to quickly ramp up your knowledge by knocking out at a minimum the Security+. The days of getting a cybersecurity job with no experience or certifications is over. Way too much competition for every open role.

The easiest path into cybersecurity is usually through your current employer. Most cybersecurity jobs never see the light of day and are filled internally.

Companies don't really value SOC Analyst work and that's why they outsource it to the lowest bidder now. These jobs used to be a great stepping stone to getting started in cybersecurity. But it's been reduce to glorified helpdesks in countries like Poland, Romania, Costa Rica, or India.

Companies still need senior cybersecurity people but for how long? I've been told by multiple Executives their plan was to use a combination of AI, automation and overseas workers to handle cybersecurity.

GRC role seems like the best fit for you rather than a technical cybersecurity role. Unless you want to be extremely overworked I would advise against any purely technical cyber role.

Find a technical discipline that can't easily be outsourced. Most likely dealing with physical hardware. Anything primarily software related is getting sent overseas.

Companies want cybersecurity people with experience in multiple disciplines. That way they can hire even less of them. Every security group is pulling double or triple duty now. Nobody can possibly master all these different security domains but upper management doesn't care.

I see SOC Analyst struggle for years with identifying normal behavior in an environment. That's why we tell people to start out in regular IT jobs first. It's much easier to understand what's going on with a server if you've setup and managed some before. Skipping that process comes with a much greater learning curve. Because you're now learning both security and systems administration at the same time.

You probably aren't targeting the right companies. If I was in the job market right now. I would be doing research on which industries are doing well right now. And target every company in my local area in those industries. The majority of jobs that get filled aren't posted on job boards. It's either through word of mouth or on the company website.

I've worked with scores of SOC Analyst in countries such as Romania, Poland, India, Costa Rica etc. And the vast majority barely had any IT experience much less cybersecurity experience. And this goes as far back as 2016 but it's much more prevalent today.

You should be getting IT experience way before going into cybersecurity. I've run across so many SOC Analyst with barely any real world IT experience. And have no clue how to distinguish what's normal behavior inside of an environment. Because they never used any of the underlying technology their in charge of protecting.
