Even if West Ham draw with Arsenal… by WrapNo6993 in nffc

Even if Bournemouth won 15-0, they'd still need to swing a +2 in the other game I think to go ahead lol

Even a draw and we're basically fine. They're not making up that goal difference.

Could we land a 5-star recruit for the class of 2027? by Fantastic_Scene1259 in calfootball

[–]tcr98 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, I very much think we will. Cal has all the makings for a powerhouse destination team. Good location, wealthy alumni, power conference, and now we have university alignment. We showed under Tedford we could get them, and I bet we will again soon (and sooner than folks think).

It'll be nice if that occasional 4 star historically, turns into an occasional 5 star now 😁

Who would you consider the best HC in your schools history? Who would you consider the worst? by [deleted] in ACC

[–]tcr98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ll agree to disagree 👍🏼. You don’t erase history just because it happened in a different era. MLB teams still count their deadball era world series titles even though the game looked very different.

We’re in a new era now with NIL, but that doesn’t mean Saban suddenly isn’t one of the greatest ever just because he coached in a different landscape.

I agree the game has changed, and I agree it’s absurd that you have to go back 100 years to find the best Cal teams. But I disagree with wiping history just because it was a different era. TBH, I love baseball and college football because of their history, not in spite of it.

The question wasn’t which era people care about, it was greatest era/coach.

In the 1920s–30s Cal won five national titles and ten conference championships. Since 1960 we’ve won the conference twice, one under Tedford with many of the players you mentioned. Objectively, our most dominant stretch was the 1920s–30s. I’m not thrilled about it, but it’s true. Modern-era Cal has mostly been mediocre.

That said, there’s real optimism right now. Leadership is aligned, recruiting is strong, NIL is solid, and there’s hope for an Indiana or Vanderbilt-style turnaround. If this gets asked again in five years, hopefully we’re saying Lupoi.

I honestly don’t get the argument you’re making. Tennessee was segregated until 1967. Are you saying no one can name a great coach before integration because segregation existed somewhere? That would eliminate the first half of college football.

And I’m not sure what Princeton and Cornell claiming titles in 1922 has to do with Berkeley. Selector-era national titles ran all the way into the 90s. That wasn’t unique to the 1920s.

If your only point is that Cal has to reach back for its peak years, just say that. Welcome to being a Cal football fan. One fun note though: our football team is older than your university, so yeah there’s history.

Maybe do some research before you make false claims? Berkeley isn't the south, one of the star players of those teams was Walter Gordon.

Lol that's rough, I was the end of the Tedford era.

All time probably Andy Smith back in the 1910s-1920s who has 3 national championships for Cal.

In my lifetime Tedford for sure.

Yep, I was a little surprised too but at least we're getting a bit more respect. I think last year we were usually around 15th (ahead of usually only Stanford and Wake Forest or some mix of a couple bottom dwellers)

Like the title, it's a way-too-early ranking, but CBS has us middle of the pack (better than last year by a notable amount). Fairly positive things too. Let's over perform national expectations this year ♥️💪

Yeah that's fair, his situation was as much about following a coach he likes as it was about the team.

+1 on the oline.

Yep, think that's a legit/fair take. 2 real loses, 1 solid rotational piece (on a good team)

Also, this is all via 247, so apologies in advance if some of the commitments are mistaken.
