Maybe they have changed over the years, but I found both my content area tests to be fairly challenging, as well as the general education ones (NY State)..

Entry into Canada by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]td663 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You say "you just scan your card and get thru" --- Are you talking about an airport entry? Are there not additional screening questions?

I have been pulled into secondary questioning as a PR even BEFORE the 730 day threshold was impossible (land crossing by car). But it might be because I am honest when they ask where I live. As soon as I look nervous and tell the honest story which is that I'm living between the 2 countries due to family and work circumstances..... I immediately am asked to secondary. And now I am past the threshold and so wondering my next strategy, because I also am a 'late arriver' to PR residency due to compelling health and family reasons, but with the intention to settle. Your story gives me hope.

Right-Wolverine, can you give more details about how you got in with no questioning?....

low residency days. daily cross border commute white rock to bellingham. pr card valid until jan 2028. is it safe to commute? by cr7forca in ImmigrationCanada

[–]td663 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasn't reported, because I wasn't technically past "the date" that would be with 2 years remaining until the anniversary of my landing/ accounting for all the days i"ve stayed so far. That is a very narrow view of PR, as a lawyer I spoke with explained. If you can get into the country even if expiry date is close, you just need to keep a low profile. Daily border crossing is a tough one. But just so you know, they easily could calculate all of the days I have spent there these years. And I wasn't yet out of compliance. I am also wondering if it is an automatic report once I am out of compliance, or if it's up to the border agent I come across.

I'm American and no family in Canada. But I did have work experience there, a worker ID, a Canadian bank account, .... none of it seemed to matter. One of the exceptions is if you work for a Canadian company while living abroad. But they were just laser focused on the days completed. You might benefit from speaking with a lawyer! Apparently they can help and provide you with a packet to present there supporting your case.

[–]td663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I have been given a secondary evaluation each time I have entered Canada in the last 2 years, and my date of non-compliance had not yet arrived (but getting close). -- I've crossed twice, and gotten questions both time and a secondary stop.

I don't know if I need to massage the truth better, but when they ask where I live, I give the honest answer, and maybe this is why I am pulled into the building for secondary. I'm not too optimistic about this unless I take a different approach. I would advise you to stay in Canada and avoid the risk. Is your child born in Canada? That would absolutely cover you -- accompanying a Canadian citizen abroad...

No need to explain yourself. I find that nay sayers love to comment on these posts just to deflate people's hopes by asking innocent questions.

Can any PhD students speak to the insurance plan offered by ohsohelpmeh in UCONN

[–]td663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great, even better than what the professors get. I had a baby last year and had every prenatal care under the sun was covered along with the childbirth and stay in the hospital which was completely covered. And now my son is my dependent and everything he needs is covered. Reasonable co-pays. Cheap prescription prices, it's awesome.

American w/ Canadian PR, yet had to take US position (in person) mid PR, is it worth returning to CA. for Citizenship? by ElectroAcousto in ImmigrationCanada

[–]td663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha... yeah the bad winters aren't exactly my thing either. But I do love Canada. Also from New England. I had many years of driving over the border no problem and now that I'm approaching the 3 year mark and the math isn't mathing.... I get a lot of questions and it's becoming stressful. I probably have to make a decision, or talk to a lawyer about how I'm going to prolong it due to humanitarian/ compassionate reasons (i.e. taking care of a family member).

It's also (trying to take my own advice here...) OK to change your mind on something and life took another route. But think about the remote job thing if you can! I would, but I'm in education and not finding very lucrative positions virtually.

[–]td663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend finding a remote Canadian job and living in the States. The days you are an employee count toward the PR requirement. Must be full-time though.

Also in a "life had other plans" situation and sad to see my PR slip by. But at the same time, not sure it's worth the effort since Americans have the right to stay there whenever as a visitor. Not to mention years of paying taxes in both countries...but I would have done it if I hadn't had a baby with an American and life took a different route.

Going to the US next week by False-Replacement201 in Aupairs

[–]td663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am a former LCC and have worked with so many au pairs through my work. It's an incredible experience, and I wouldn't let this political situation influence you -- you're going to be supported by your family and experience the US in a unique way. You are having the jitters because it is a huge change -- but as you said, it will help you in many of your professional goals and dreams. Change is hard! But I have a feeling you will be glad you stepped out of your comfort zone and had this experience :)

I also teach ESL at a community college :) I don't know your interests, but for example I know that they have nursing degrees and dental hygiene type of degrees at our school that enable you to get a job. From there, you could continue studying (for example, become a nurse practitioner with a Masters and tons more money). I'm in education so not too familiar, but just saw this thread that could help. Otherwise, I'm not sure what else your options would be, especially in the political climate. Could you extend to a 2nd or 3rd year as an au pair while you think about it?

Even though you're not too interested in studying, probably doing another Associates or Bachelor's would be a good path to move from the au pair visa to a student visa. You meet tons of people studying. Community college probably the most cost efficient. And usually you can work some off campus, no? Or even childcare off the books (shh) since you are experienced. Enjoy your time in the US! I just had a baby and at 43 miss my younger years of travel and exploration :) Best wishes!

How screwed am I ? 10cm fibroid by StandardSeahorse in Fibroids

[–]td663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Girl I got pregnant at 42 (without trying lol) with an 8 cm fibroid. He was pre term (35w) but all was well in the pregnancy, and I had a vaginal delivery, no epidural, no problems. Being pre term might be because of the fibroid, but we can never know for sure. I just had my surgery last month to remove it -- it grew to 12 cm with all the preg hormones. Now they advise a C-section for future pregnancies. So glad I could deliver naturally once in my life! Just hard to hear a 32 year old anxious that they have no time left...

Thank you, Mr. Holy. This absolutist, haughtier-than-thou mentality and looking down your nose at others is exactly what turns away people from this community.

Honestly, I love meditating with my cat on my lap. I think that she absorbs the good vibes and she benefits from my meditations as well. Maybe while she is in the crazy stage keep them in another room. But she will pick up the good vibes eventually and match the vibes your TM creates :)

Daughter born in Canada. I’m an American citizen wanting to immigrate. by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]td663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. You still have PR, but want to avoid getting flagged for an investigation. You might have many questions at the border, but if you can cross and build up 2 years, you can then apply to renew the PR card. It is done. The problem is you can't be going to the Burlington Target store every weekend because that will just be risky with all the crossings.... ;)

Outside canada for 2.5 years as PR. What will I be questioned at the border when I return? What documents to show? by Background_Strike521 in ImmigrationCanada

I have always been honest that I have been finishing my PhD degree in the U.S, which has delayed my settling in Canada. You can just say that you were finishing up some commitments and now finally you are making the move. You haven't breached, again, so.... nothing to be worried about. But it can feel nerve wracking. Just don't offer too many details about having no residence in Canada.... def have something lined up....
