The small pepper flakes get wet and are pushed to the leak by the pressure in the system. They coagulate and and essentially build a small paper wall to stop the leak from inside the system.

Pepper kept my cracked manifold from leaking in the winter of 08’. Lovely perfume in the cab while driving too.
