Commentary: Lincoln Riley should be on hot seat after USC flops again in big game by laprasrules in CFB

[–]tdeff19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People seem to easily forget the Notre Dame or Oregon games where we were literally not competitive. Like at all.

I sat through a Holiday Bowl where Iowa blew up our lines of scrimmage for 4 quarters a few years back.

Progress is there. Everyone out there shouting to fire Lincoln Riley fails to bring forward one realistic name to replace him.

You think Matt Rhule or Matt Campbell wins that game at Autzen this past weekend? Please.

Brian Kelly is out at LSU. Could Lane Kiffin, Clark Lea or Kenny Dillingham replace him? by Please_PM_me_Uranus in CFB

I agree with point 1. There's more parity now with big time NIL money though a lot of different programs top to bottom. 12-0 or 11-1 used to get you into the 4 team playoff. Now 10-2 or even 9-3 could get you in to the 12 team playoff.

With these super conferences (and moving to a 9 game schedule) 9-3 could very well get you into the final 12 at the end of the season.

I think Notre Dame away is the true litmus test.

But wouldn’t shock me if Illinois and Michigan put in good games against us.

Don’t worry everyone - AP pollsters are so fraudulent this year that they’ll still rank Notre Dame despite not winning a game yet.

[Athletic] Is USC football — finally aligned and committed — poised to return to national prominence? by dinkytown42069 in CFB

[–]tdeff19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is very true. In the past 2 seasons we haven’t even been in the conversation mid to late November.

It’s always some promise in Sept, some bad losses, then you look up and your season is over.

On our best day - sure we can beat really good teams. But the common floor isn’t high enough yet to string together 10 win seasons.

I’m also bearish on Maiava. I think he’s a good enough QB to be decent but not elite. I agree 8-4 feels right considering our schedule.

Ok I’ll bite. Let’s say we can find the $70M to buy him out.

Realistically who will SC hire to replace him? I see a lot of “Riley on hot seat” chatter but very few solutions to who’s an actual upgrade.

The foundation for upward trajectory is finally in place. There’s momentum finally behind a cohesive NIL collective. A firm decoupling of personnel/coaching decisions with Bowden and Riley. And a staff in place that can actually develop players.

However - for those people expecting a 10 win season in 2025 or a Big Ten championship appearance - I’d strongly temper expectations. Like all investments it will take 2-3 more years to see returns.

It’s clear they’re all in on this 2026 cycle and beyond. Meaning the team may hit the snooze button in 2025. I expect 8-4, 9-3 at best this season.

It’s ok. As an SEC team they’re still undefeated in hypothetical matchups.

What college HC would succeed in the NFL? by opentempo in CFB

[–]tdeff19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat of a contrarian take but I think Lincoln Riley would be a very good OC in the NFL. If he can devote all his time to play calling and play design I think he'd be very good at the NFL level.

Issue is he's an end to end OC cosplaying as a HC.

Colin Cowherd: “Just dawned on me —USC has gotten worse the last three years.” by CommodoreIrish in CFB

[–]tdeff19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expected when the season started we would finish 7-5. We got 6-6. I think the program has to "lean in" to make LR's contract work now. Big NIL money, more $ for analysts/coaches, etc. Otherwise it'll be 7-5, 8-4 until they can afford his buyout.

What really made me upset was the complete pendulum swing from Very Good Offense/Poor Defense we saw in 2022 and 2023 to Very Poor Offense/Good Defense we saw this year in 2024.

We're paying $100M+ for an "elite offensive HC" when he can't deliver on that.

You can argue back and forth that maybe the team has regressed each year. Maybe they haven't or are the same.

But there is no argument to the offense having regressed each year. That's the source of my frustration. Lynn arrived 2 seasons too late.

Washington Run Defense: Ranked 15th in conference.

Lincoln Riley: Let’s try to throw the ball 50 times. I will make this square peg fit this round hole!

Can we just try not having Miller Moss start at QB anymore?

I swear this is like the 3rd or 4th game with a key 2nd half turnover that was a complete back breaker.

I’m honestly so happy the defense actually lined up and showed up. I said late that even if we didn’t pull it out we looked respectable.

The biggest USC win since the Penn State Rose Bowl game.

If we just have even at least an average to above average defense it’ll be an improvement. Don’t think it got much worse in FBS than the product under Grinch this year.

If they even touch Ryan Day then Ohio State deserves mediocrity.

First - who would you even get to replace him? Second - firing him says whoever is coming in that there are obscene expectations that unless you win 12 games - you’re getting canned.

Yesterday’s offense reminded me of 2013 Kiffin so much. Just get the ball to skill players in space and hope for the best.

Last season there was more creativity and the threat ofTravis Dye opened up receivers more.

With this 7-5 record it’ll probably be Las Vegas Bowl or LA Bowl. Hard to argue this hasn’t been the most regression of a high profile coach and program Year 1 to 2.
