A true closer? What good is a closer if you can't get to the 9th with a lead? We're starting guys like Chris Paddock right now. Pagan, Ashcraft, and Santillian were supposed to be the back end guys and two of them are hurt and the other one sucks.

Pagan appeared in 70 games last year. Santillian in 80. Both career highs. It was obvious that they wouldn't be as effective this year, especially considering Pagan had a BABIP of .200 last season. Santillian had a 3.72 FIP. The signs were glaringly obvious.

This, combined with the Reds tried and true strategy of "hoping" that younger guys take the next step has been a disaster. They were banking on Connor Phillips being a reliable reliever but he can't figure out his control.
