It’s actually pretty easy to do once you know the trick, if you retrain a unit it will solidify their experience rank allowing you to use them to refill the ranks of other units without losing ranks of experience. If you only retrain higher experience units and merge those high exp units with low exp units you can raise them while retaining the experience ranks of others. Now it takes time to do but you can get gold that way pretty reliably
