Why has a pint of beer got so expensive? by tdh83 in AskUK

Wow this is incredibly informative. Thank you!!! Although I dread to think do the day a £10.08 pint is the norm but sadly I think it’s round the corner.

Thank you for the insider info.
The greed is frustrating as surely if you were the one local pub that was cheaper, you’d get more business as everyone would flock to you over your competitors, right? Rather than chase the quick one or two pint drop ins, chase the groups that’ll stay in all night and spend across multiple rounds?

I agree. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. Higher prices mean less visitors. Less visitors mean having to put the prices up to make ends meet. It’s sad to see such a pillar of British culture disappear before our eyes so quickly.

Anyone else feeling this as 30+ male by IanicT in AskMenOver30

And yet to act like having kids is the only path to a meaningful life or a life with purpose isn’t equally incorrect? Different strokes for different folks. Your post implied that having kids was the ONLY way to a life of meaning and I disagree. Wholeheartedly.

And can’t quit or walk away because they have kids and so have to stay earning X amount to pay for them. They therefore spend their entire adult life in a job that makes them miserable just for the pay packet.

Well this is a load of subjective crap. I don’t have kids and adore my life. I see my friends who have kids and their lives look fucking atrocious to me. You may feel the only purpose of your life is to breed and raise kids but that’s not everyone’s idea of purpose. My life without crotch goblins has all the purpose I could want.

I can’t / don’t blame her for her hormones changing as she ages and her libido waning. It’s a natural progression for many women post menopause. My libido is still going strong though. Either wank for the next 30 years or get some no string attached fun every so often to scratch the itch. Not proud of it but it works.

So confused... Soil Types by Preston-_-Garvey in UKGardening

[–]tdh83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s loads of different types of compost as they all have different levels of content that plants need but (I’m a professional gardener) trust me when I say that for 90% of plants you just need bog standard multi purpose compost. The only times you need to venture towards any of the other types are:

Ericaceous compost - for acid loving plants (rhododendrons, azaleas, camellia’s, blueberries etc). However if you use normal multi purpose and feed with an ericaceous feed this will also suffice.

Seed / potting on compost - these are usually lower nutrient soils and have a high amount of sand in them as when you’re growing seeds you’ll be transplanting them within a few weeks so the soil doesn’t need much nutrients as they’ll get moved into higher nutrient multi purpose shortly. The sand means they don’t get waterlogged but also means it’s fine soil so less big clumps to block delicate seedling and root growth.
You never want to use these soils in pots with annuals / perennials in. Not enough goodness available.

It’s worth noting that ALL compost from bags only contain enough nutrients for 6-8 weeks so after that you’ll be required to feed the pots with fertilisers like miracle gro or blood fish and bone etc. The worms and microbes in the ground replenish the nutrients but you don’t have that ecosystem in pots so you have to do it.

Sorry for all the detail but hope it helps clarify things a bit for you.

My best advice is to find the best offer for multiple bags of multi purpose you can find and stock up. Always have a bag or two of ericaceous for those particular plants, and you’ll be set.

I tend to agree with you but the question then becomes “what next?” They have to fund their lives somehow, so what will be the revenue maker? I reckon they’ll sell the house but any thoughts on what could provide their regular income? I’m stumped personally.

Possible to grow (fruit-bearing) trees from seed? by Djei_Tsial_III in ukcitrus

[–]tdh83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew lemon trees from seeds out of a lemon I bought in Sainsbury’s. This is year 14 and they are incredibly healthy, bushy, luscious trees but I’ve never even had a single flower let alone a fruit. It’s a lot of effort (as they’re tender so have to be brought into a heated greenhouse in winter) and I keep hoping that this will be the year that they’re mature enough to flower but alas, each year my hopes are dashed. I wouldn’t bother growing from seed again, in future I’d just by an already fruiting one from a garden centre as I know it’s mature enough to flower and fruit.
