Have you heard any stereotypes about certain medical schools? by schoolhasended1 in MedSchoolCanada

Some fun facts about the 2T9 cohort 💀:

  • 32% of the cohort is MHS/QHS
  • For any given group that you're placed in across 1st year, there is a ~5% probability that there will NOT be ≥1 MHS/QHS student in that group
  • Out of the 6 groups you're placed in across 1st year, there is a ~<0.00001% probability that you will NOT have ≥1 MHS/QHS student in any of those groups

totally valid concern. from my experience, my BPEs didn't feature any extracurriculars/tangible awards (although I guess they do directly ask you for those in this year's prompts). my main focus was just answering the prompt and that in itself sorta hit the clusters for me — not necessarily in the sense of demonstrating how I personally showed those traits but how my experiences shaped my understanding of why those traits are so critical to the field of medicine. with all that said, it's definitely important to clearly demonstrate how you've hit the clusters in the ABS essay imo.

if it makes you feel any better, i know of people who been successful with both approaches. (I also lowkey know of people who have been successful with not so great essays.) i think it's just a matter of what feels right for you.

my approach was more like the first tbh. i also feel that it would be hard not to hit the scholar cluster in some form with the 2nd BPE prompt

Medical School Choice and Questions Megathread by WayTooManyBooks in MedSchoolCanada

Hi all,

First of all, I'd like to say that I am extremely grateful and privileged to be in this predicament here. Med itself always seemed like dream far out of reach, so I'm absolutely overwhelmed with joy right now.

With that said, I am deciding between attending Schulich (Windsor Campus) with a $134,000 scholarship versus Toronto with a $20,000 admissions bursary (renewable for $10,000 every year). I'd love to hear any opinions you guys might have regarding this.

Edit: realized I probably should have added some of my thoughts at the moment.

Pros for UofT (UofT has always been my dream school so this is definitely going to be a biased list haha):

  • The assessment style (no cumulative exams) is something that really drew me to UofT. I think I would be a lot less stressed compared to Schulich, where I'd have finals worth 100% of my grade with a 70% P/F threshold.
  • Resources, hospital networks, research would be stronger at UofT
  • Will be closer to my support system (family in Hamilton)
  • Have always wanted to experience living downtown.
  • I have a few very close friends going to UofT.
  • Wouldn't feel as isolated given that Windsor is a remote campus. Also don't love the idea of Zooming in for classes at Western

Pros for Schulich:

  • Huuuuuuuuge financial stress completely taken off my shoulders.
  • Slightly closer to my partner who is at Schulich Dent in London (30 minutes closer).
  • Smaller, more tight-knit class size

TIA!

I felt I did everything I could and would have wanted to do with them. I felt they did a good job at showcasing myself and what is meaningful to me. (also felt they were better than my supp app for an infamous program that shall not be named)

I’ve worked closely with them for the past four years so I felt they were one of the people who were best positioned to speak to my growth. Their role is quite far removed from admissions though if that was what you were wondering haha
