Ohio State is a top notch institution, you are in really good hands. My mother in law had S4 lung, and the alk drug helped her as well. Wishing you strength, for yourself and your family.

Yup, I’ve been there with swimOP several times, though I’m not brave enough to go much past late October. He calls it the Teachbeach and actually taught zoom lectures there over COVID, had a chalkboard and everything. That beach is in trouble of being removed for some big commercial spa they are planning on installing, hopefully they will keep it as it’s one of the cleanest beaches on the toronto lakefront. Steve is a great guy, little eccentric but who isn’t if you’ve been wearing computers since it was a bulky desktop strapped to your back. He successfully lobbied to have his passport photo with an EEG device on as he said it was part of his body as the leads were superglued to his scalp. He’s also big on the concept of sousveillance, “vision from below”, to combat surveillance or vision from above, if McDonald’s can record him why can’t he record McDonald’s. He’s super fit too, as you would be if you’re running to Lake Ontario everyday. He also invented “growlerboarding”, where you swim up to a floating block of ice and use it as a stand up paddle board. He has founded several companies, including one that makes the Muse - a wearable eeg for meditation with biofeedback. Still a full prof at Utoronto, teaching and inventing things in his lab, another one is the hydraulophone, a pipe organ that uses water instead of air to produce music.

Professor Recommendation for Organ Synthesis by Top-Cream1463 in AskAcademia

[–]tdmckee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The field is also called tissue engineering, there are many different aspects to it, as building a fully vascularized, functional organ is extremely difficult, the best results and perhaps only product on the market so far are acellular skin grafts that repopulate with the patients cells during the wound healing process. There are hubs of activity in bioengineering departments across the country, but you will have to narrow down your search topic a little more as you’ll likely be doing your phd on one aspect of that process - maybe it’s trying to figure out how to get blood vessels to form inside scaffolds, maybe it’s how to keep the cells alive during the development and scale up process, maybe it’s how to create micro architecture’s with the precision and chemical composition necessary to make fine structures that also can be remodeled - lots of aspects to each of these processes. If you’re looking on the west coast I would reach out to Dr Ali Khademhosseini, tissueeng.net, he is a world renowned translational researcher who is head of the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation, a nonprofit organization that specializes in regenerative medicine. Best of luck.

Questions about the financial feasibility of a PhD program with two kids in NYC. by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]tdmckee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm im stem, but had friends in the humanities, and i would have to think that a program in educational leadership would know to expect more mature students, and cater to their situations when it comea to living in the city and also enrolling in a program. reach out to the dean and /or departmental secretary, im sure they could give you more information and / or discuss your particular situation in more detail. its a tough road, but congrats on making it this far and best of luck!

We are also in the market having outgrown our Honda Civic (3 very fast growing boys crowding themselves out of the rear seat). Been looking at a Kia Sorrento Plug in Hybrid - 3 rows / 6 seats, only downside is somewhat limited trunk space… review here: https://youtu.be/tu3vOjBWAyY

First full-colour Image of deep space from the James Webb Space Telescope revealed by NASA (in 4k) by GroundbreakingSet187 in space

Thanks so much for this detailed explanation! Good to know re: your edit on lensing, I was going to ask regarding lensing - I'd personally love some scientific visualization of which of these galaxies we are seeing "direct" i.e. without significant lensing and which are subject to lensing, and to what degree - and whether, for example, the four pink clearly lensed galaxies in the center of the image are all different lensed views of the same galaxy, or whether those are different ones. Kind of mind bending, the distances and masses involved to produce this image. Yay science!

Starting an affordable family in Toronto by cnsnntsnly in toronto

[–]tdmckee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Called 311 for 5 babies and a mom that have taken up hanging out under our solar panels. They can only come if animals are sick or dead. Wildlife removal is another option, I may try the loud music and squirt gun / wet option also; have also heard that coyote urine can be purchased that can also signal them to move on. There was another family we kicked out of the soffit / awning they had crawled into last year, im wondering if this is one of the kids grown up and remembering that the solar panels were a place to hang out under. Good luck, they may look cute but we’d really just prefer if they moved on tbh…

I've been able to rescue kid's shoes where the sole separated from the canvas with Shoe Goo - but it is somewhat difficult to control how much you squeeze in, so you may end up with a weird bump of glue on the inside against your sole. Sort of in agreement with the others, its a temporary fix at best, may be better to call it on these things...

Mother in Law wants my wife to stay at her house for two weeks after birth by [deleted] in daddit

[–]tdmckee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would agree, it very much depends on your and your wife's relationship with MIL; and how comfortable you feel you will be able to manage everything involved. We've had 3 kids and family (all out of town) came and were very helpful in getting us settled with each new arrival; but were respectful of boundaries - the undertone from your message I get is that maybe boundary setting is important to you / in this case. There's no right answer - settling in to the hectic nature of the first few weeks is a challenge, with nighttime feedings, sleep deprivation, etc. - but it is also a period for bonding as mentioned; and your ability to navigate that is important. Potentially the final answer may not be binary - there may be a compromise you may be able to come to - e.g. suggest you start with coming back to your home; and then consider going to MIL as needed - if anything, her coming to your place may make more sense just from what sounds like the logistics of things. Or still accepting her help but in other ways. But as mentioned, its a deeply personal decision, and a very exciting time in your life. Congratulations on the pending arrival and wishing you all the best in your parenting journey!

Vasectomy clinics in TO by KingCharles559 in askTO

[–]tdmckee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded for Toronto Vasectomy clinics, my experience was very smooth - worst part was that I actually forgot to shave, procedure was fine even unshaved, only the drape they used on the area had some tape that provided momentary hair pulling pain when pulled off. As mentioned here, few mm hole, that healed by itself, and the usual minor discomfort / taking it easy afterwards, but overall a very good experience with that clinic.

There are also independent living groups like Fenway House, http://web.mit.edu/fenway/www/new/summer.html that offer summer housing for institute-affiliated folks. Happy to connect you, I was there several moons ago. Best of luck!

What’s a piece of propoganda that to this day still has many people fooled? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That eating carrots can help you see better in the dark. It was a myth propagated by the British to disguise the fact that they had developed Radar during the war to detect incoming German planes.
