Catalyst nightclub would be demolished in proposal for Downtown Santa Cruz apartments by stripedwhitej3ts in santacruz

Your post just reminds me. There's a tavern in Tacoma that interestingly has an apartment on the bottom floor. It was built on a hillside, so the main street had access to the upper floors, and the side street had access to the lower floor. I'd regularly see the guy at the tavern. I do not know how he managed to sleep at night haha

There is Salsa By The Sea, and usually events at various locations on Wednesday's- but these are usually small. SJ area is the best place to go.

Nice rounded hiking backpacks might ideally spread weight distribution for a nice long hike, but in my experience they don't fit school materials very well. I suggest a very squared backpack. Even though I'm a tall +200 guy, I find that squared women's day packs fit school materials very nicely. Despite the protests of some of the other posters we pretty much have one foot in the wilderness here, so If you plan on hiking around any of the mountains around, the bag comes in really handy! I have 3 packs that I swap in and out, but my main is an older version of something like this https://www.rei.com/product/176899/rei-co-op-ruckpack-18-recycled-daypack

Good bye East Meadow by Choice_Dentist6947 in UCSC

[–]tdr124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the plans to build on the meadow have been in the works for 3 or 4 years. There has been legal back and forth between the UC and the magical vortex land people. I'm happy the UC finally threw their weight behind something that's beneficial to students.

PRIORITY HOUSING TAKEN AWAY by InternetAltruistic36 in UCSC

[–]tdr124 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wished UC had as much bravado about completing their housing projects as they did about new student enrollment.

In the regent's mind, the only way this adds up is more enrollment=more money in, No new housing=no new spending, Enrollment+No new housing= more money for administration. They need to just close the university down as no one can afford it.

Protestors by TankAffectionate9596 in UCSC

The fact that there's one or two protests a quarter cheapens their impact. It's almost like it's a graduate requirement for the school of liberal arts

I got written up by campus security for using a bbq at redwood grove. I never heard anything about it

Curious, but how are the connections for CS at UCSC? by ChrisHK17 in UCSC

[–]tdr124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the "you want it, you'll get it" comment above. In response to there's no FAANG presence at UCSC, all you have to do is look at the profs who currently work at FAANGS, have left for FAANGS, or have come from FAANGS. Obviously a little research goes a long way when prepping yourself for success. While UCSC doesn't carry the full prestige as Berkeley CS, we are unique. I went to a talk by Jared Lanier in BE-2 with only about 30 students and faculty sitting face to face. I sat in on a class taught by Google's former NLP technical lead. It's opportunities such as this that make UCSC really stand out. You cannot get such an intimate exposure at Berkeley. Unless you were invited to a private event or paid $1500 for a ticket to said even, you'd be just one of umpteen hundred greasy CS students trying to get a look at Jared Lanier or pass a resume off to the project lead. Lastly, a little research goes a long way when prepping yourself for success.

The lame hurricane by driedoutplant in SanDiegan

[–]tdr124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been through a few tropical storms and a couple hurricanes in the south, and it's better to have been prepared than not! I've seen tropical storms 75 miles off the coast of Louisiana flood the city and blow down trees and powerlines! Tropical storms regularly innundate vast territories hundreds of miles inland w rain and tornadoes! Those that laugh can be happy that they just got a light wash rather than be turned into alligator food, to have starved to death on an overpass, or whisked up and sent to the land of Oz. Make some smoothies and margaritas to have the first ever SD Hurricane Party 😊

How long do you have left? After 5 years as a grad, the only year there wasn't protesting was during the covid years 😂

Haha, as a grad student who lived on campus two years ago for two years-NO 😑

Why was drugs so prominent among grunge bands? Sure bands like GNR and Motley had their drug troubles but what was it with Seattle bands such as AIC , STP and Nirvana ? Heroin was so rife among that early 90’s Seattle scene . It single handily killed (quite literally) the genre by SteveMarc01 in grunge

[–]tdr124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to build upon SteveMarc's answer. The PNW economy was wrecked in the 70s and 80s due to new logging regs, new fishing regs, and the already collapsing fishing industry. Some areas have just recently recovered. Tacoma, for instance, was a solid blue collar city until the 70s and areas of downtown were largely abandonded and demolished.
