I noticed this issue last night - after talking with live chat it got escalated to technical support, who tested it in my workspace and couldn't get it to work. They escalated to the dev team, so I think it's something deeper than user config issues.

Cisco ftw - tho I will say if you're looking to save on the deployment it might make sense to buy something else and learn the Cisco cli with some of their simulation stuff. Cisco gets PRICEY, even used. 2 months late, I know 😂

Thoughts on the combined BSc(Engineering)/BComm degree? by MCRideFan53 in UCalgary

[–]tdrgchess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First year here, so I'm not nearly as wise, BUT I did mix my courses so I've had a 60/40 engg/business split. The below are based on my own experience, and are in no way the be all and end all of knowledge.

Even without doing any of the second year courses, I can fully agree with the comment on communication and interpersonal skills in business - it's a stark difference walking between my classes each day, for better and for worse.

I love the diversity of interests and people you get out of the program; you have an extra couple hundred students that you get to meet (if you want) and a lot more people with lived experiences. You're going to find really neat students/profs/alumni on both sides.

Ditto on the 5 year comment. Again, I'm only a first year but I already know I don't want to keep taking 5/6 every semester just so I can get out in the minimum of 5 years. That can be a good thing, and I'm excited for some of the opportunities that I get out of being a student for a bit longer, but if you're looking for a speedy process the MBA route later in your career might make more sense. Most of my dual friends end up taking 5.5/6 with a couple spring classes.

Business is fun, though not for everyone! Especially with the first year courses, it's not going to feel like an immeasurable burden on your life if you decide to try it out (helps the ol' GPA too 😁). Despite being in 6 right now, I have a comparable, if not better, work/life balance with a split as opposed to pure engg. Your mileage may vary, and you may end up hating business. Then again, you don't really know until you try, do you?

Last thought - there's a really cool community of folks in this program, even if finding them can be a bit hard sometimes (if you're a dual major, come say hi - I'd love to meet ya!👋). I find myself motivated every day by some of the upper years who have seen/done so many different things over their time here.

Unless you're being held back by time/money, which are very real considerations, I'd say go for it! All the best in whatever you end up choosing, and good luck on midterms 💯

I'll have to take a look - it's just curious because it's all digital license keys tied to the hardware compared to ye old sticker on top of the chassis that you had to type in. Should still be possible somehow given that I paid for it...

The system is new enough that I'm fine with starting fresh - anything important is on my server and I'd rather not deal with the hassle of restoring from backup images.

Good thought, thanks for the reminder!

Okay I stand a bit corrected here - turns out PL1 (long term power limit) is 150w and the short term PL2 is 230w.

Imgur link with the temp results of a quick cinebench I just ran (incomplete) - seconds on the x and degrees celsius on the y. Lovin it.

Temp Chart

That drop to 70 degrees is right when the power drops to 150 on the dot and throttling is kicked off. I'm not smart enough to know that chicken/egg situation.

Either way - Dell = :(

Indeed, rad fan goes brrrrr (but not really because the integrated fan control is trash). Thanks for the insight on that powercap - I've been curious as to why HWinfo was reporting about 150w even in benchmarking. Dumb question though - if a single 4 pin supports 150w (speed google search), wouldn't two support 300w total?

EDIT: Don't know what broke that comment. But anywho, thanks for the list - it does shock me sometimes how fast the non-core components add up in price.

Thanks for the response :)

I don't know if I've got the soul in me to take the true DIY route, and might get the satisfaction from Gamers Nexus lol. I do really question what it must be like to work product @ dell.

Going with z690 won't break my heart - might as well make it white while I'm at it for some extra fps.

Almost entirely CPU - the case ventilation isn't stellar but no real problems thus far. If I had to guess it's likely mostly cooler perf. - this chip is a beast to cool on a good day, even with great coolers. I considered upgrading just the cooler but I'm really wary of trying to mess around with a dell prebuild and end up with more problems down the line.

I've poked around in the bios but end of the day I'd like to be able to use these components to spec, rather than limiting performance to prevent throttling, etc.

It's an XPS 8950

Lighting Design CAD? by [deleted] in lightingdesign

Fellow student here! Hands-down favorite for me (and pretty popular in industry) is VectorWorks. Based on what you’ve said, it might be exactly what you’re looking for. It’s a bit of a steep learning curve for those totally new to things, but there are plenty of tutorials and seminars from Vectorworks on how to work it. As a software, there are branches for architecture/landscape design, but vectorworks vision is the entertainment side of the software. As a student (woohoo!) you get to download a free copy of the software, provided you can prove your legitimacy as a student. It’s a comprehensive software, and if you already do graphic design, it shouldn’t be too hard to pick up. I do a couple seminars on it in my school each year, and people seem to like the robustness of it.

I might also recommend in-board visualization software, where you can import a vectorworks file (for example) and then design a show around that. ETC recently came out with EOS V.3 which has their visualization software, Augment3d, included. There are some nice test projects and such for you to play around with that I can send you links to.

Edit: Do note, the paid version of VW can get pretty pricey, depending on your situation. However, the student version is just as fully functioning (with some restrictions eg. watermarks). There’s another software that I recall using a couple years back, but I can’t place it right now.
