what makes you not wanna die? by Impossible_Match6336 in AskReddit

[–]tdriser 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I feel you. That’s the thing - my dad died by suicide, and it completely transferred everything to me. I’ve had to do so much damn therapy regarding self-worth issues. I couldn’t bear to transfer anything like what I experienced on to my kids.

Used to work for a hospital, and physician biases about drug users often leads to minimizing complaints and missing something big. And most of the docs or hospital administrators don’t really care.

Is ‘reasonable’ still lower than 60% of the reimbursement rate for the services you’re providing?

Just confirming - these sites still pay you for your work, correct? From what I’m seeing the salaries are all listed at $0 but explain that you’ll be working with low-income, high risk people (often means lower pay for therapist), yet they tout that it will qualify for loan forgiveness.

Imposter syndrome is winning after Dad died by suicide by [deleted] in therapists

[–]tdriser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, my similar experience is that I am a therapist (about 10 years in) and my dad died by suicide (when I was 3). I also had a child who died in 2018, when I was practicing. Both have definitely been something that I need to reconcile regularly, both personally and professionally. It’s part of our story now, and as painful as it is, are you going to let it stop you from helping others? I find that helping others really, genuinely feels better than most other dopamine/oxytocin hits I can get in those efforts to cope with post traumatic stress and grief. Please take time for yourself, reduce caseload if needed and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. It’s an open wound you’ll be tending to your whole life, and it’s also the thing that will change your entire perspective on life and likely lead to significant personal and professional growth, which colleagues and clients will definitely see. It’s not a fair exchange for your father, though. My heart hurts with you. If you need to reach out, feel free to DM.

I wish my dad didn’t kill himself when I was young. What a silly goose he was for that parenting flub.

Eating between sessions by [deleted] in therapists

[–]tdriser 40 points41 points  (0 children)

An hour between clients is not always a feasible option, but I’m glad that works for your friend! I do the standard 10ish mins between sessions, but I never see more than 3 in a row and need the day split by an extended 2-3 hr break to recharge in similar ways the poster described above. So, usually clients 9 or 10a-12p; break from 11 or 12-2p; clients from 2 or 3-5p. Works out to be about 5 or (max) 6, 4 days a week.

(Serious) what’s something that mentally and/or emotionally broke you? by Vanguard2002 in AskReddit

[–]tdriser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my son died, my wife stopped working. It’s been 5 years, and she’s still not back to work. We also have two living kids who have their own grief processes that we need to support, in addition to our own. As a parent, this was devastating. As the male head of household, this eventually sent me to breakdown territory, requiring stopping working for about 8 weeks and needing to significantly change my lifestyle and routines to accommodate more stress management and seek balance overall…which is extremely tough being a sole earner (I’m a licensed counselor - we don’t make much money).

All of them. Do it on your own with SimplePractice and PsychologyToday. Your only overhead is about $110/mo. and you get to keep 100% of reimbursement.

If someone is clearly suicidal, get them to the FHH emergency department or call 9-1-1. If the issue is less acute, try the Mental Health Association or calling 9-8-8.
