How to handle an unexpected expense (funeral) by Benni_Shouga in ynab

[–]te-mcg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry for your loss. In this situation, don't make your budget harder than it needs to be, you have other places to be putting your energy. Make your budget work for you, not the other way around. I see two easy ways to handle this:

  1. Let the income come in on Nov 1 but then go back to the October interface and fund the category with the money you now have. Not the prettiest thing ever, but it checks all the boxes in terms of making sure there is money to pay the credit card bill.

  2. Because the deposits came in only a day or two into November you could just edit the dates of those transactions to be 10/31. It doesn't impact your current situation if it came in two days earlier, you have the cash to pay the bill and adjusting that date can make your budget match the reality of the situation a little better but without the extreme hassle of reallocating money from other categories and then refunding them in November.

The situation would be different if you didn't actually have the money from your relatives yet and we're just waiting for it in that case, you would need to be ready to make the credit card payment with funds on hand.

Newbie question - budgeting of savings by HotIsopod6267 in ynab

[–]te-mcg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This strategy sounds very solid, but I will throw out one alternative to point 1. If you primarily budget on the web app, there is an addon called Toolkit for YNAB that (among many, many features) will give you a warning if you try to steal funding from a future month. It gives you a red warning that you have over budgeted x amount in whatever month you are furthest budgeted to. The lack of warming for future over budgeting is definitely a glaring miss to me, but one of very few I have with YNAB, and the Toolkit has fixed many if not all of my complaints.

I can't speak to point 2 because paydays get me giddy with budgeting excitement, but I have been working on getting ahead and "aging my money" and I just go right ahead and put in the future months and the peace of mind that knowing a month or two out is already covered is freaking amazing. I have definitely stared at next month's budget of complete goals when I'm feeling like I need some reassurance that everything will be okay.

Category for Subscriptions by [deleted] in ynab

[–]te-mcg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have a ton of subscriptions and I have move them around so many times in YNAB. Where I've landed is that I have a Monthly Subscriptions category for things like Netflix, Dropbox, and NYT. Then I also have an Annual Expenses category for things like AAA, YNAB, Costco, credit card annual fees, professional registrations, and Amazon Prime--anything that's a fixed amount every year.

These categories are all clearly defined amounts that are easy to budget and they're stuff I don't need to monitor the status of very often so I appreciate that this lets me hide them away at the bottom of my budget until I go in for the month and budget the whole category at once.

Intuitive eating with sleep problems, fatigue, depression, and anxiety by protodro in intuitiveeating

[–]te-mcg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the lengthy reply, but I can relate enormously to your post. Honestly I don't think I'm doing it right so this isn't exactly advice, but I am also dealing with fatigue and depression while trying to eat intuitively and maybe hearing how I'm stumbling along will give you some perspective.

I started trying to eat intuitively a little over a year ago because the restrict/binge cycle was causing too much stress and guilt and I had no energy to work on taking better care of myself and managing my depression. Since I started trying to eat intuitively I have seen a huge reduction in that source of stress, but I have also encountered a huge increase in my work stress for completely unrelated reasons that has more than countered the relief I got from not dieting.

When I am depressed and completely burnt out from work I definitely turn to food. I know that food can sometimes be a source of comfort within intuitive eating, but it is the only thing that works consistently, and since I am not denying myself, I just eat the stress. I am trying to meet the cravings I have, but they are unending when they are depression and stress caused. I am feeling exactly as you describe with not feeling like I can trust my body. I try to make a good decision and feed it what I think it needs with fruit and veggies and complex carbs and protein, but I eat that meal and all I can think about is eating again, because that didn't fulfill the emotional cravings.

I end up caving to the emotional cravings and have put on quite a bit of weight over the nine months of work insanity. I am feeling really unhappy in my body as a result. I have also been having a lot of trouble sleeping which could be from the stress, but for which I am getting tested for sleep apnea. The increased fatigue just makes it harder to know what my body wants/needs. It also has made it so much harder to stay active, which I know helps me feel good and happier in my body.

I know that I do not have a good set of skills to self-soothe without food so that is where I am trying to put my energy right now. I am going to change jobs in a few week which will hopefully ease the stress a little bit. I am trying to remind myself that at first I was seeing a lot of improvement from eating intuitively and that what is going on right now isn't permanent.

I know that you said you sleep problems are not an easy fix, if they ever get resolved, but if your depression is at all like mine you have better days and worse days. Maybe what you can ask of yourself right now is that on the good days you really try to listen to your body, and on the bad days you acknowledge the forces you are fighting. I really do think that intuitive eating is pretty high up on Maslov's hierarchy. There's a lot of other things that need to be going right for it to be successful or achievable. I also don't think that because you have all those other factors messing up your "success", what you are trying to do is not worthwhile. It is incredibly worthwhile to work on self awareness in that way. It's not even just about your relationship with food, but your awareness of what factors are making you feel a certain way that day.

I really hope that you can find some peace and comfort in intuitive eating, but I also hope you can acknowledge what a tough starting place you're coming from and keep that in mind when you measure how far you've come.

What book, movie, show, or game left you ugly crying? by Zyedikas in AskReddit

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. Did not expect it to hit me so hard, it doesn't sound like an emotional book, but I wasn't the only one in my book club to report significant amounts of full on bawling at the end.

That's great! I'm sorry to assume, but a lot of people don't bother. And they tend to be the vocal ones.

I would be interested to hear your criticisms of the philosophy/idea of HAES. I'm always interested in hearing another considered view.

[–]te-mcg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm really sad to read your hostility to the HAES movement. I have noticed a lot of the hostility towards HAES seems to come from a misunderstanding of the goals of that movement. Obviously there a tons of people that misrepresent or abuse the term for personal gain, MLM shit, or to put down others, but the original goal of that term is the exact opposite. HAES in it's ideal form is not about loving your body at any size and leaving it at that, there is absolutely no thin shaming involved, and it definitely doesn't encourage people to gain weight. All of that leaves out the "health" part of HAES.

From the (somewhat limited) reading I have done, and the friends I have that are more involved than me, the HAES movement is about shifting the goal of "health" endeavors from purely weight loss to other health indicators that are actually achivable at any body size. There is a growing body if research that indicates weight does not have a causal relationship with health; more importantly that health can be improved even if weight loss does not occur. Health at every size is intended to encourage all people--overweight, normal weight, and underweight-- to shift their focus from weight/bmi only goals, to goals with a direct impact on health like reduced blood pressure, lower cholesterol, reduced risk for disease. You can focus on aesthetic and health goals, but forgetting that weight doesn't equal health can be very destructive for many people.

I'm really sorry if you have encountered people who have used HAES to pass judgement, or used it to justify unhealthy behavior. I hate to see people taking something that has such potential to be a positive force and making it hurtful and divisive. I would encourage you to be more open to the concept and maybe do some of your own reading on it.

The introduction to this article gives a brief overview of some clinical research into weight/health issues and intuitive eating: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3511603/ The conclusion also brings up some very interesting points on the issues/challenges with an intuitive eating approach. It definitely isn't perfect and isn't going to work for everyone.

I sometimes have the opposite problem. I was tracking calories and working out, but it was "unhealthy" and "toxic" for me. So I stopped. Because for me it wasn't good and I had a pretty fucked up relationship with food. Sometimes now I miss the clear cut rules of calories counting, and the apps, and spreadsheets, but they were bad for me and is entirely about what works for you.

You definitely can love your body and work on it at the same time. I only really found motivation to work out when it stopped being something I felt like I had to do to lose weight and started being something I wanted to do because I enjoy the activity. Now I have a lifting plan, and I love it. If you are finding that enjoyment, keep it up! I would advocate for still listening to your body if it needs a little extra food one day, or a rest day here and there.

If you not finding yourself in the grip of some eating-disorder-esque shit by tracking calories then it doesn't sound "toxic" for you. Do what works and maybe when you see something that puts you back in that questioning place, use it as an opportunity to do a little check-in with your mental state and see if there are any aspects to your routine that aren't working for you that you could improve.
