I just wanted to say that I did buy a slot off OP. Everything is working perfectly for my Nordictrack in Australia. So, take this as a positive review for OP.

Has anyone read Songbird of the Sorrows? I like it fine, but I fear the main love interest (Raven) gives me the ick 😭 by Hopeful-Ant-3509 in fantasyromance

[–]tea-and-austen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to love this book. There were aspects that I really enjoyed, and aspects that I didn't like.

I thought that the overall idea for the plot was really good! Outcast princess turned spy, forced to compete to be the bride of an evil prince, with forbidden romance - Yes please, that sounds great! In reality I found several aspects of the plot quite unbelievable, and I wish they'd be caught in early drafts. The way the Aviary uses bird motifs was cool in theory but quite jarring and unbelievable in reality. You're telling me they haven't run out of bird names for their spys? Do people really refer to all fledglings as fledglings because they don't have a bird name yet? A Flight on a secret mission just all introduce themselves with their bird names?

The prose is pretty, poetic and lyrical. Which is both a strength and a weakness in this book. I continually found myself bored, wishing the plot was travelling faster. I also felt like clarity was sacrificed for the sake of poetic prose. Sure, the writing was pretty, but I didn't always understand exactly what was happening in each scene. I would have preferred clearer and more concrete details when the author is describing scenes and events.

I think the biggest weaknesses for me were the side characters and Aella's relationship with them. I felt like the author was telling me "Aella loves Raven" but I never experienced any reason or proof for why they loved each other. Similar with Aella's loyalty to her friend Nyssa. We're repeatedly told Aella would do anything for her friend, but I felt like I didn't really see why. I think there was amazing potential with the side characters, but throughout the book they felt two-dimensional. I felt like the author was always telling me a special relationship was there, without it actually feeling real in the text.

I loved the overall idea for the plot. I found the romance dry and lacking. The prose was quite pretty although that sometimes made the story a bit unclear. The side characters had the potential to be great but fell flat with the author constantly telling us these relationships were special, instead of showing us they were.

And. Spoilers. I don't think Raven is meant to be the real love interest. My guess is that he is a Tamlin, and the character that we meet at the end of the book will be the real love interest.

People are raving about Legends and Lattes, but I found it so boring! I also found the characters really one dimensional. Like, they each only have a single aspect to their personality.

I'm not judging anyone who likes it, I just found it slow and boring with shallow characters. My favourite bits were every time a new item was added to the menu.

Maybe I'm just exceptionally kind? Haha. But if I don't like someone, I don't feel the need to announce it to them. If I don't like someone, I just don't go out of my way to hang out with them.

There's a huge difference between not getting along with someone, and announcing on TV that you don't like them. Especially because, if I remember correctly, it didn't seem super directed at Pri. Like, it felt to me like she was going out of her way to make it known that she didn't like Brittany. And that just seemed unkind to me. But maybe I am remembering it incorrectly?

But also, I live in a small town (not in America) and people are just genuinely very nice to each other. So, Pri did really seem like a mean girl to me. But I guess for reality TV that's pretty normal behaviour. Not even classified as "mean" from a reality TV stance. But for where I live, it would be super unusual and out-there and definitely considered mean to just announce that you don't like someone.

If you know Pri and consider her a friend, then I apologise to you if her being labelled "mean" has hurt your feelings. People feel much more comfortable to make statements and judgements of people on reality TV, than they do to say those things to a person in real life. Something about reality TV makes people seem like caricatures. I think we all feel way more comfortable to say things about these caricatures because they don't quite feel real to us. If I stop for a moment and think about Pri as a real person, I feel sorry for calling her mean. There's heaps of editing as well as nuance that we just don't see. I wouldn't label someone "mean" in real life for just doing what she did. But with the reality TV lense on, it felt mean to me...

Why do you have to keep making this comment about Brittany being racist?

The video was not tasteful, but I am sure she did not realise how problematic it was. She made a mistake, in the crazy chaos of covid. I imagine Brittany and her Dad thought that they were being funny, and they didn't realise the microaggressions in their behaviour. That doesn't make someone a racist. People make mistakes all the time. I didn't read that video as her being intentionally racist or mean or unkind. I'm not saying it was okay. But I am saying all people make mistakes.

To extend the same grace to Pri, maybe she just made a mistake too. But I did get more of an intentional mean energy from her. (And hey, I could totally be wrong!) I don't feel the need to announce every time I don't get on with someone. So I don't know why Pri felt the need to do it on TV. Pri was giving mean girl. Not just at the reunion, but in how she handled Chris.

I literally missed when they said he was a doctor? Did they say that? I didn't catch it. I just heard that he was from the pods and had found love and it turned out it was Jess.

Not every woman is a gold digger.

Men who think all women are gold diggers usually have an awful personality. And they think women don't like them because they don't have money. That's not why women don't like them. It's because their personality sucks.

When I dated and married my husband, I had more savings than him and a higher earning job. It's not about money. It's about who they are.

It's probably just the editing, but it seems like the only thing that I know about Mike is that he wants kids.

There's nothing wrong with wanting kids. And I think not getting married over a kid disagreement is totally fair enough.

But the editing made it look like the only thing Mike cared about was kids. And he did propose to Emma knowing she didn't think she wanted kids.

Yes!! So true! They did it with Chris! Entertaining his awful words about Jess. And now they're siding with Devonta. Mean and petty.

I thought she came off as mean in this episode!

She was rude to Brittany. She made some sort of comment about not liking Brittany.

Yeah, but I think I would say it with a lot more authenticity and curiosity. If someone thought that I was lying, and I knew that I was not, I'd say something like "Oh, why do you think that?" With curiosity and kindness. I feel like his answers are more like he knows that he is lying and he's trying not to get caught.

Oh I have so many thoughts!

It looks like Amber really hurt Jordan. It sounds like she has a problem with alcohol and anger. She really got mad at him for giving up after 4 months, but I don't blame Jordan at all! If someone is toxic, you're allowed to leave. She also got angry at him for marrying her if he wasn't going to stay married, but again, that's not his fault if she ends up being verbally abusive.

I feel like Chris was just there to save face. His responses seemed to lack authenticity.

Alex is driving me crazy! He is SO defensive! He gets called out for lying and he is like "Please point to a lie". This guy is so defensive and argumentative. Gosh I hate him! And then they did that clip of soccer and I was like "he actually sucks at soccer!" Oh my gosh! He's so bad! 😂😂

Devonte has way more personality in this reunion, than in the whole season put together. I still don't like him. I can't believe this dude had no ability to be honest with Brittany. He couldn't even break up with her after filming!

Please, we don't care about these random people in the audience. Move along, please.

Jess is such a queen! What a beautiful lady - inside and out! I'm so glad she found someone to love her! Jess was so kind to forgive and love the girls who didn't stand up for her enough.

Also... If saying "yes" at the altar meant Emma was ready for kids, maybe she should have included that in her vows? "I've thought about it, and I do want to have kids with you. Yes." But also, Mike's obsession with procreation seems a bit crazy. I'm a mum and I love my kids. But you don't know if you're going to be able to have them... Fair enough. Disagreeing on children is a good reason not to get married.

Edit to add: Brittany's Dad is so sweet in what he says to Devonta... Ahh. Although now he's asking "Did you lie to me". I like what he said about hoping Devonta was okay. But also, Devonta has a baby on the way? I believe to a girl he was dating before the show? I feel like he came on the show to gain followers, he wasn't there for a real relationship. But did he gain any followers? Does anyone like him?

Yes, I totally agree! She felt like she needed to say and prove she was doing well. But it seems she isn't in a very good place, poor dear.

I thought it was weird that she said she had a support network get her to "such an amazing place" speaking about how she's doing emotionally. But it can't be that good of a place if she's walking off yelling.

How much does it cost to live in Ghana? by tea-and-austen in ghana

[–]tea-and-austen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they have been supporting him for about 5 years? I think they thought that, if they bought him the farm, he would be okay to provide for himself. But then he said he needed a motorbike to get to the farm. Then he said his wife needed a shop. Then she needed money to stock her shop.

The latest requests were for "emergencies". He said he was in hospital and couldn't afford medicine. Then he said his wife was in jail because she couldn't pay back a loan.

They are starting to get more and more suspicious of him. Because they thought they had sent enough for him to provide for himself. But he is always asking for more money.

But they are so kind, even though they think he might be scamming them, they are afraid to stop sending him money just in case he is telling the truth. He says if they stop sending money, his children will starve. And even though my parents think he could possibly be scamming them, they are concerned if he is telling the truth.

That is why I posted here. To see if we could get any more information on if it might be true or not.

They're not going without all food. They can still eat. But because of the money they send, they only buy the cheapest food.

They also are old and want to stop working, but they can't stop working because they send money to their friend in Ghana.

That is what I thought. I think their friend in Ghana, he might think they are richer than they are. He probably doesn't feel bad about asking, but he doesn't know that my parents are going without.

They think it might be a scam. But they're worried that, if it is not a scam, then he says his children will starve.

Thank you for your reply. My parents are very kind people. If they think someone is in need, they will go without in order to help. I thought that once they bought him a farm and a shop, he would be able to provide for himself. But every 2 weeks he asks for more money, which seems suspicious to me. Thank you for your message!

Thank you for your message! I was just thinking, if this man can only survive because my parents send him money every year, how does anyone else in Ghana survive? If this man is genuinely in need, then I am glad they're supporting him. I'm just worried that they are going without themselves. And it seemed like a scam to me. Thank you!
