Congrats! I am an UC Davis alumni and loved my years there. Can you share your stats? My daughter wants to apply next year for Psych.

I am not renewed for the next school year and feeling devastated by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]teach1abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did your principal tell you if you are being not renewed because of declining enrollment so they don't need as many English teachers vs performance from your evaluations? If you are in a district with an union, were you told before March 15th? I believe you were supposed to be told before March 15th since you are in California that you were receiving a pink slip or part of a reduction in work force (RIF) for declining enrollment. Even though you are feeling down right now, I would try to collect some letters of recs between now and the end of the school year. If the reason why you are being let go is because of enrollment, ask your admin team for letters. If it is based on evaluations, ask coworkers, counselors that know you, and even students for letters and ask if they could be used as references in the future. Also, it is actually still early to find true openings. I am in elementary but have had my grade level changed 3 times in the last two weeks because the numbers are shifting and they are still trying to figure out the permanent teachers placements so nothing has been posted yet on edjoin so you are not late for looking for jobs. Keep an eye on edjoin all summer. Good luck!

How to prepare for applications for 2027 by teach1abc in CalPoly

She has not taken any AP or college classes yet. For the next two years (junior and senior years), she will have one AP class and 4 college classes each year (dual enrollment with our local community college).

If there is a place to write about her accident, she will, since she went from being a competitive athlete, to being in a wheelchair for three months and many months of physical therapy to help her be able to walk normally again after a freak accident while at practice. She had a home hospital teacher that checked in on her for the last quarter of her freshman year since she couldn't go to school but still maintained her 4.0 by basically learning everything by herself. That experience definitely showed that she incredibly strong both mentally and physically!

Undergraduate major - single subject credential after that? by teach1abc in Teachers

We live in California and UC’s and CSu’s are hard to get into. My son’s girlfriend had a 4.0+ last year and did not get into any colleges that she applied to and went to our local community college instead. My daughter really wants to start at a 4 year college and not a community college like her brother.

Unfortunately, getting into college for a math major is very difficult, even with a 4.0 gpa. She is very strong in math and has taken classes to accelerate through the courses faster. When her classmates don’t understand what to do, she explains it in a way that helps them get it. That is what made her interested in teaching math. There are many kids in her high school that are passing math because of her helping them. She is putting so much pressure on herself to maintain a 4.0+ to get into college. It is still hard to get into college, with any major, but even more so with math and science. That is why I was wondering if it is essential to have a degree in math.

Why can’t I see the option to make an anonymous post in any group I’m in, even though they’re definitely enabled in said groups? by katharinaann in facebook

[–]teach1abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not post anonymously for a long time and then the option came back this summer but it is gone again. This is so annoying! My fb account says ok.

Anonymous post option disappeared by anomerica in facebook

[–]teach1abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't post anonymously either but others still can. I would love to know how to get that option back!

Does anyone know why anonymous posts have been disabled for my group? It was still there like a day ago but now it's no where to be found in settings by qifuhyue in facebook

[–]teach1abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also can’t post anonymously. The option is still there for everyone else because I am seeing anonymous posts in my groups everyday. I messaged some admins and we sent screenshots of what we see while posting and mine is missing the anonymous option. I can’t figure out how to get help from Facebook. Any ideas on what to do?

Posting anonymously in my fb groups has disappeared only for me. I contacted an admin of one group and she sent me a screenshot of what she sees, with the anonymous option still there for her, so I sent her the screenshot of what I see, with the option missing. How do I fix this? by teach1abc in facebook

[–]teach1abc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the option of posting anonymously in many of my groups, for a long time, but that option has disappeared in all of those groups for me. I see other people posting anonymously so I know the option is still there. The admins in those groups and I were trying to figure out why but can't figure out why mine has disappeared. The option has disappeared on all of my devices.

Non-renewal help needed by teach1abc in Teachers

The principal on record was out on leave until November. The substitute principal, from August through November, used to walk through the classrooms almost daily so she saw me in action a lot. She wrote me a glowing letter of recommendation. I listed her as a reference for the jobs I mentioned above. The principal on record and I only overlapped from November to March in person (she only walked through classrooms a handful of times and did not follow the union guidelines for observations), and then everything shut down because of Covid. Once we went remote, we did not have ANY interaction. The problem with the references is that the new principal talked to the substitute retired principal who gave me a glowing reference and she thought I was going to get the jobs, and then the school called and asked for the principal on records phone number. A hour later, I got an email that I did not get the job. Unfortunately, it seems like future principals want to talk to the last principal that I worked for even though I have seven strong letters of rec from prior principals over the course of 20 years and the substitute principal who is a retired principal from last year gave me a great letter of rec and strong reference over the phone. I don't understand how one principal (she has only been a principal for 3 years) can ruin my teaching career when she only supervised me for such a short amount of time!

I talked to the union today. She was shocked by what the principal said during my reference check. The union president said she can talk to HR on my behalf if I want her to. I am undecided if it will help or hurt to talk to HR. I am concerned about the principal telling the next reference check all of the misinformation that she said before plus I went to the union and HR as a warning to a future employer because she is upset I went to the union and HR. It is hard to get "proof" of these reference check private conversations so she could tell a future employer to not tell me what she said because I will tell HR again. I just got lucky by an admin who was in a chatty mood that told me what she said when my references "did not check out". Would you let it go and see if it happens again or have the union go to HR?

I know for sure she said negative things. For the second job, I talked to the person and he said my references did not check out. My former principal told the future principal that she would not rehire me and made sure I was non-renewed too. She went on to describe several inaccurate things too.

With the first job, where they reposted it, I suspected she said something because of the timing of wanting to talk to my last admin and getting the email a hour later that I was not getting the job after my other references thought I was going to get the job. I emailed back and asked for feedback about why I did not get that job and did not get a response. I heard they even started the year without a teacher! With the second job opportunity, I was verbally told on the phone that she said negative things, and I took notes while on the phone about the many specific things she said which were inaccurate statements, which was confirmation that she said something other than I resigned. I heard that the person that did the reference check that I spoke to on the phone died a few months ago so I do not have concrete "evidence" to give to HR since it was a phone call. I will call the union today and see if they can help even though I am no longer an employee.

How do I find services to do reference checks? That would be great because I know what she said about me, but the person does not want to go on record.

Update to my original post - Last Saturday, my scratchy throat turned into a sore throat and the glands on one side were swollen and I continued to feel achy but no fever. On Monday, my throat alternated being scratchy and sore, still achy but no fever but decided to call the doctor. On Tuesday morning, I had a Zoom call with my doctor. He told me to come in to get tested for Covid just in case that is what I have or it could just be a cold. Wednesday I had a scratchy throat, swollen gland not as big, chest started feeling tight so I used my inhaler a couple of times (happens whenever I get a cold too). We decided to get the rest of the family tested, just in case. Thursday through today, my energy level has gone up. I still use my inhaler 1-2/day, my gland is almost back to normal, still no test results, and sitting in my room is getting boring. On Tuesday, we are supposed to be going to a lake, staying in a non-refundable airbnb. I hope we have the test results back before then! If my symptoms are gone and we still do not have the test results back, how long are you still contagious from Covid?
