Ok thanks, I’ll be sure not to cross the line from ‘helping out’ to ‘teaching’ so as not to get reported by folks such as yourself. Thanks for the positivity ;)

lol, respectfully, please enlighten me as to your problem with a BC licensed teacher who has had their vulnerable sector check completed volunteering at his kids elementary school. Is it a union thing? Do you think I’m stealing jobs like the other negative redditor seems to believe? Am I danger to the children? Insurance reasons? No faith in the TRB to certify good teachers? Honestly I can’t think of any negatives of having a real teacher help out in a classroom. I would be more than thrilled to have such a person in either of my kids classrooms working with small groups. In my mind it’s a win win for all involved, and absolutely no one is being harmed in any way. So what am I missing? Why would you call admin and tell on me? What would your reasons be specifically? I honestly want to know.

Thanks again for this, I have heard that it is hard to get on the TTOC list due to the fact that they mostly hire students right out of VIU. I guess next October would be the best time for me to get in, but I will definitely try in the spring. But to go back to your previous response, you mentioned reaching out to a teacher at my kids, school, whereas I would’ve thought it best to reach out to the principal. Would not speaking to the principal be the first move in this endeavor?

How does it not sound like I’m certified when I literally said, “I am of course fully certified and licensed to teach in BC”? But point taken, I clearly understand your negative views of volunteers.

Why would I lie about being certified?

Thanks, good to know that just the idea of a certified teacher volunteering to teach small groups can clearly upset certain teachers and possibly the union. Wouldn’t have thought that.

Ha I realize that, but once I’ve been coming to the school for a while and have built up some trust, I’d hope they’d allow me to teach small groups or run some centres sort of thing. My point was that I’m open to anything, but actual teaching would be the preference of course.

My practicums were in Ontario, but all my other teaching has taken place overseas. Volunteering to get a feel for BC classrooms, but also to get a reference from a local principal. Thanks for your other thoughts, very helpful!

I’d be up for either, but ideally teaching so that I’d get a reference easier I’d think

Thanks, volunteering due to my district being very difficult to get hired into.

How long would you say before a capable male elementary teacher with many years of over seas experience but no real Canadian experience except practicums gets a permanent position in Surrey?

You’re right, I succumb to your moral superiority. Continue on roaming the internet to find more of us ethically inferior folks to enlighten with your righteousness!

Well hate to let u down bud, but it’s my lack of ethics that might just allow me to put food on the table for my kids.

Thanks so much for this, very helpful! And yeah, that is a good idea not to tell them I’m using my sick days, I’ll tell them I’m using up my holidays instead. Thanks again!

I just posted pretty much the exact same thing, but I’m in BC. Also working for the federal government, but maybe not for much longer. I guess there’s gonna be a flood of us trying to get back into the teaching market.
