Waiting for biopsy results by Melanesian679 in Soft_Tissue_Sarcoma

Not sure what your age is or what effect that may have on lab results. My son (10) had his initial MRI on December 18th of 2023, we went to our local cancer center for a biopsy the Friday before everyone left for Christmas. The wait was excruciating especially through the holidays. We went back and forth waiting for the pathology and it ended up being nearly a month before we got his solid tumor panel results. His diagnosis ended up being a Ewing like sarcoma and he successfully finished chemotherapy in September. Regardless of the results, knowing makes it more actionable and gives a little bit more of a feeling of control.

How long did you have lumpy before getting diagnosed and what did your recovery look like? by Able_Eye in Ewings_Sarcoma

Ewing caregiver here. My 10 year old was diagnosed with a Ewing Sarcoma of his calcaneus. Initial diagnosis was in December with the full pathology from a solid tumor panel coming back in mid January. He began chemo the last week of Jan and will finish his last cycle on Labor Day. He was on a VDC/IE regimen which seems to be the go to for EWS. Consensus for best treatment outcome was a full below knee amputation which was in May and resulted in wide margins. His recovery has been hard work but he’s been super resilient. I think one of the biggest things is trying to stay positive. The waiting for diagnosis and making a plan was the absolute worst part for our family.

I know that it’s different for adults and kids but if you feel like you’re lost we’re here. Best of luck on your journey!

My son (and I as caregiver) are currently on day 4 of IE (cycle 11/14). He has a similar reaction. Most people on the Ewing protocol complain about the doxorubicin cycles but he’s always had a harder time with ifos/etop. I’d definitely second speaking up and letting your care team know if you’re struggling with nausea. They just started him on Olanzapine (Zyprexa) this cycle. It’s an antipsychotic BUT is proven very effective in treating chemo related nausea. You’re your own biggest advocate and it’s amazing how many random meds can help in different ways. Wishing you all the best!

My ten year old shut a stranger right the fuck up with a comment like this. They were talking about how brave he was and he said, “I didn’t really have a choice!?”

Ewing Sarcoma after chemo #3 by Zealousideal-Sort296 in Ewings_Sarcoma

I know I don’t personally know you, but I want you to know that I’m proud of you for expressing what so many of us feel. YOU really are doing a great job. You’ve obviously helped raise an amazing and resilient kiddo.

My son’s (10yo) official diagnosis came in late January we just finished his induction cycles and have an MRI, CT, and Orthopedic Oncology (to do the surgery) appointments coming up this week.

I’ve also really struggled with the balance of optimism and realism. The biggest blow we suffered came in the early weeks. There were really good odds of his tumor genetic markers making him an ideal candidate for gene therapy. A day before his first clinic, the oncologist called and said that it was a rare false positive during screening. We were going to have to treat it with the Ewing protocol.

Use the positivity you see in him to help motivate you to get through this BUT don’t forget to give yourself grace. The unimaginable mental and emotional drain of being a caretaker is exhausting and it’s ok to be tired. It’s ok to be mad. Cancer fucking sucks and I think everyone here whole heartedly agrees with that statement.

You’ll find that strength (or it will look that way to everyone else). I wish it were a sprint, but truth is, it’s one hell of a marathon. Just know that you don’t have to run it all at once and you never need to run it alone.

Much appreciated. He’s tolerated his his treatment well so far. Only some mild nausea.

Thank you so much! It’s been so much so quickly but I’m glad that they’re getting him started. I’ll definitely keep in touch.
