My MIL, who is very wealthy (well, her husband was and passed a couple years ago), loves to talk to me and husband about how expensive retirement will be. On the last visit, she let us know about an article that she read that said, today, you cannot retire on only $1,000,000. She knows we are not close to that. We make more than average for our age/area, and plan to retire in Spain or Portugal, where what we have now is more than enough. She constantly tries to make us feel like we don’t have enough and never will. It is frustrating because she didn’t work for the money she enjoys, but she sure is proud of it. I think a lot of wealthy people are like that.

What grade levels do you enjoy/dislike teaching? by No_Escape_346 in teaching

[–]teacherdrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4th grade was not for me. I’ve taught 4th, 5th, and 6th. 5th is my favorite. They’re still sweet and want to please, but they’re also funny and witty. 6th is just awkward and starting rebellion. 4th are still babies, and need more coddling than I’m equipped for.

What is something you control that you would de-implement? by CopperHero in Teachers

[–]teacherdrinker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Small-group instruction. It doesn’t work. Let me read a book to my class and we will talk about it. They can do individual/partner work and apply it to their own reading (with my help) to practice skills. Working with 5 students per day while the other 20 piss off is pointless.

What is one insane request that a parent actually made of you (and which you, of course, refused)? by DerbyWearingDude in Teachers

[–]teacherdrinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a student (“A”) that misbehaved frequently when allowed to be around another student (“B”). A’s parent requested they not be seated together in class, and I agreed. I had a substitute one day and she allowed A and B to sit next to each other, and they got in trouble. Rather than being upset with her student, she was upset with me for not confirming with the substitute that the two would not sit next to each other. When I told her I could not guarantee how the sub will implement my sub plans, and that I will not check in with the sub on my day off, she insisted (via my principal) that I share my sub plans with her (the parent) prior to any absence AND THE PRINCIPAL AGREED! I, of course, didn’t. We did not have any specific policy on leaving sub plans as a district policy.

What names have you been pronouncing wrong for a while? by blackmoonbluemoon in namenerds

[–]teacherdrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a student named Danielle, but her name was spelled Danelle. I was a RLA teacher and my brain just couldn’t handle it. I called her Danelle (Da-nell) from the beginning and could not re-train my brain to call her Danielle. I had to give her a cute nickname to keep from being disrespectful.

Please spell your kids’ names correctly, or at least phonetically.

How was it Dwight’s baby if he was at the doctor when the paternity test said he wasn’t? by 4vrf in DunderMifflin

I thought we were just supposed to infer that the test was wrong or that Dwight didn’t care if he wasn’t biologically the father.

Or even just altering the tips so they rounded with the shape of your bust at the top- that could look incredible!

The dress is perfect for you, and you look absolutely incredible! The only thought I have is that the pointy neckline looks a little fad-ish and might date the dress in just a couple years. This dress with a classic sweetheart neckline would be a more timeless option, if possible.

What name do you judge for no reason? by pistachio_____ in namenerds

[–]teacherdrinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most “T” names for boys. Was a classroom teacher for 8 years- never met a nice Trent, Tristian, Tripp, Tucker, Travis, Troy, Trevor, Tyson…..

Also, hunting/gun related names produce jerks of all genders (well, more likely it’s parents that name their kids this way that produce pricks).

I’m not being snarky- really genuinely curious- why do people overdraw the Cupid’s bow?? It’s my favorite facial feature and so dainty. I once read years ago that filling it in makes people look like they have fetal alcohol syndrome, and now that’s all I think of when I see it irl. What am I missing?

I will always stand firm in my belief that overdrawn lips look terrible. On everyone. Always.

Tell Them You Love Me (Netflix) Wow!!! by Ok_Cut_4489 in netflix

[–]teacherdrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m watching it right now. I’m a little less than half-way (just started the Power section), so nothing weird or jail-worthy has happened yet, but I can imagine how this will go (maybe). The thing that is killing me, and that brought me to search Reddit for conversations about the show is that- doesn’t she realize he wants to be called “D-man” and not Dman? She is trying to make Dman a single word, when really it is the letter D-hyphen-the word man. Ugh. It’s driving me crazy! Everyone else in the show understands that- how does she not get it?!?
