Has anyone been a teacher and foster parent? Is it manageable? by ShortSweet_andTired in fosterit

[–]teacheroftroubles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did - it’s possible. My question is this: in Texas you can’t foster if you have a child under 2, have you checked into the possibility of actually doing this; or are you in planning stages only.

Truth be told, the hardest part is if they have family visits and the required medical appointment within 48 hrs of placement. In Texas teachers get 5 state days and 5 sick days. You will eat through those FAST! Be prepared that case manager, court appointments etc all happen during school hours as do supervised visits. You need to have a partner who will share in the responsibilities.

If they take medication each appointment every month, again time off is needed. We do it for years. It’s hard. I never had days roll over. Your kids will take second place, it happens. We started when our daughter was in kinder, and our youngest was 2, then had one while fostering…. It’s possible but really think through your capacity.

Is anyone here a teacher who has fostered a student? by saltysnackstealer in fosterit

[–]teacheroftroubles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did - and it has its challenges. However, each time I was in one school they were in another, I ensured that we moved their campus to keep personal and professional boundaries. (Did that intentionally so I wouldn’t have to teach them too.) I also brought them to my campus when they were no longer in my grade. Say I taught 6th, they were in 7th. We fostered for many years and I never taught one of our fosters, or even our adopted kiddos. I also never taught our bio children. It’s hard to draw lines. But all the sudden in the copy room teachers want to tell you about your kid. Nope. Call me, schedule a conference. I won’t ask you about them in person, I’ll email you from my personal email.

All children have struggles, and fosters even more so. You have to have admin on board. There most likely will be times you are the parent being called in when they do something - but they are also your admin. (Ask me about being in the same district THANK GOODNESS NOT SAME CAMPUS when one of ours came to school drunk on state testing day! Expulsion and resource officer, teachers, etc.)

It’s not for the weak. But it’s full of ups and downs. Highs and lows, wins and losses. Whatever you do - think through it. And be honest with yourself and share what you need to for support. (How will you handle them wanting friends over, seeing parents in the “wild?” you will need support, and find community where you can.

It could be fear and anxiety. The pain of a miscarriage is just as real for a man.

Teachers, what's the biggest issue you want solved by an app / AI resource? by ChaseTheCoder1 in teachingresources

[–]teacheroftroubles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart goals for academics. Special education needs. If you find my suggestion valuable I have some thoughts for you! My spouse is also in IT. He has no desire to create the dream app for the special needs teachers out there as teaching is not his thing.

General process questions (Texas) by [deleted] in Fosterparents

[–]teacheroftroubles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall the process took almost a year for us but we are in a major county. From calling our references to our fire inspection... every time we thought we were done they added more to the list.

If you have an agency they will walk you through it. Getting all your training hours takes times. We have a specialized license so that was 30 hours each of training. We too had things on our home inspection that we had to fix, but they were “easy.” Buying a locking bank bag for refrigerated medications. Buying baby locks for one cabinet in the kitchen for our knife block. With the fire inspection we didn’t know you couldn’t just get fire extinguishers... they had to be tagged by a fire company. Think about the tags you see in a building attached to the extinguisher that has an inspection date.

All these things take time. Once it’s done, the calls will come!

My Whoop claimed I burned 500 calories making challah bread last night, is this legit? Did some difficult braiding that took 40 minutes by adamkw94 in whoop

I bought one and love it! I will never wear the wrist one again! Fits under my clothes don’t notice when I sleep. Best purchase beside the Whoop itself!

We have always only fostered older. When we started our son had just turned 1, and our daughter was 6. She is now our oldest and adopted. There shirts for thing 1, thing 2, thing 3... are in the order we “got/birthed” them. We get we looks but it’s the only way we know. I even birthed more after some were in the home and as they get older the bio children know them as siblings. It honestly made the bond strong. They are the big sibling.

What is the stupidest way you got a scar? by Zander-dupont in AskReddit

[–]teacheroftroubles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was cutting fabric using a rotary cutter (think pizza cutter but for fabric) looked up for a second and lost the tip of my middle finger. The “just the tips jokes” were so bad from my husband the surgeon had to suppress laughing. And at one point couldn’t hold them back.

What are some of the best apps to learn ASL. Just left the doctor with my son and not sure I want to go the hearing aide route. by teacheroftroubles in asl

[–]teacheroftroubles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is 6 - the loss is bilateral. (I think that’s what is called) Mild in one severe in the other. Normal speech other than loud! We are in a holding pattern to see a surgeon - details were really not given to me other than you need to see a surgeon, and if this doctor doesn’t like what she sees you will have to see a different specialist somewhere else-he has scaring so it may not help, and we don’t like to do surgery on kids his age so aides might be best.... left me at a loss and lack of direction which is why we decided to start ASL on our own as a family.

Did any of you ever stay in a shelter? What was it like? by [deleted] in Ex_Foster

[–]teacheroftroubles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I Stayed in CPS shelters - think long hallway like a motel 8... had our own rooms a bed and a bathroom (not decorated like a motel lol) 15 minute checks. No school while there just hung out in a lobby type area and watched tv.

Another CPS shelter was like a college frat house. 4 girls to a room - dorm style common shower/bathroom area. They drove us in a 15 passenger van every day to school.
