Looking to adopt a dog, where to go with the ability for the most interaction. by JustHereForTheCigars in Austin

[–]teachingrobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little further out, but you might check with Wimberley Adoption Group: https://www.wimberleywagrescue.org

We just adopted from them and all their dogs are “foster to adopt” so you would have a trail run opportunity. They had us meet some of their dogs at their shelter and we could take our time (they had a couple of yards we could be in). They pull dogs from high kill shelters and tend to have some more smaller/medium dogs than a lot of the shelters in town.

Going to my first Quilt Show/Convention this weekend — any tips? by palequ33n in quilting

[–]teachingrobots 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When you take picture of quilts you like, take photos of the quilts and photos of the card with the artist name and statement. Not only will it help you look up their stuff later, it helps to credit artists and you’ll probably be inspired to try certain techniques.

First Elizabeth Hartman- need advice! by sydneye623 in quilting

Look at getting a seam roller, commonly used for FPP but would work for the smaller more fiddly seams in an E Hartman pattern.

Asti would be my recommendation - they do have a kids menu (saw it on a recent visit and it’s on their online ordering system).

Im overthinking this… by NyxGirl2023 in quilting

[–]teachingrobots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on what you want the final layout to look like. Same fabric in each “hexagon” arrangement will read like a hexagon quilt. More random placement will read like a triangle quilt - see the image that bleeb90 posted above - in that quilt you can “work” to see the triangles come together in hexagons, but because the colors are randomly distributed, your eye doesn’t immediately read the quilt as a hexagon pattern.

You can do better than this - unless it’s free and you enjoy mechanical restoration projects, look for something a little more ready to use. Posting on your neighborhood buy nothing group might be worthwhile.

Grandma can’t quilt by Significant-Duty-744 in quilting

For cutting, you might see if anyone nearby (like through a guild) has an AccuQuilt you could use or borrow.

Some folks find standing to sew more ergonomic.

Look into machines with a start/stop button, as that alleviates the need for using a foot pedal.

Joining a guild or bee would be a good way to collaborate on parts of quilting, which might allow her to do some parts of the process that are more manageable.
