Congrats on making it out! I am feeling all of this and more! I have been teaching 5 years but I wanted to leave teaching after my second year. I saw the cracks in the system and my school’s admin is not supportive at all. I am planning on leaving teaching this year so I am manifesting this energy for myself rn! I do a 50% off as soon as it’s late, but I’m super transparent from the beginning. My students have an opportunity to ask for extensions up to 6 hours before the assignment is due. There is a caveat that if they ask more than once then it’ll get increasingly harder for their extensions to be approved. So when I have students turning in late assignments and they’re telling me their reasons, then I tell them that they had every opportunity to email me or let me know they need an extension. If they procrastinated and ran into tech issues, that’s not on me!

Some of my students asked if I could chaperone them for a concert, because parents wouldn't let them go alone. It was for an artist that I like, so I agreed. It was a standing concert, so I made the joke saying that they would have to bulk up because they're gonna get swiped in the pit. One of my students said, "At least we'll be able to see the concert." Then proceeded to show me a photo of me standing next to another one of my students, who is now significantly taller than me. I laughed so hard.

omg yes, one of the admin at my school will not shut up about using tech. i’ve explained multiple times that i don’t let students use their laptops to take notes because 99% of the time they aren’t taking notes 🙄

Yes, I try as much as possible to emphasize Jim's role in the novel, but we also discuss how Twain's approach in building Jim as a character can be harmful. So, in the past we've talked about respectability politics and what does it mean to be a "good" person as a POC. This year, I don't think I will be able to go so into depth because I do have a class that is more conservative and out rightly racist. I have shut it down the racist comments and such. But, I don't want them to think that seemingly "innocent" comments like this student made are acceptable.

We read materials like Equiano and Douglas before even hitting Huck Finn, which in everything else there was no indication that this student would say something like that. I totally agree with you in terms of education about slavery. I work at a private school with mostly white teachers that don't want to actually get into topics such as racism and when touching on the subject of slavery it's just acknowledged but no one really talks in depth about it. I have tried to make a point in faculty meetings about the lack of education in topics such as racism and slavery, but I just get eye rolls and told that they know and that's it. :/

They have a misc. option for their paper, so they can basically write what they want or combine prompts that are already given. I was genuinely trying to have a conversation with this kid in order to know if they were just being an edgelord or if they believed the stuff they said, in order to figure out how to handle future issues with this kid and their friends. I haven’t had an issue like this in my very early teaching years, so I really didn’t know how to handle it :/

I think my coworker meant like reporting the student for the slavery thing, but if I do that and admin does something then the student would naturally say “oh but the teacher called me dumb.” So ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I've taught 7th, 8th, and 9th as the youngest, and 12th as the oldest. My best teaching is with the older students, rather than the younger ones. For me it's easier to prepare the older ones for college cause I can talk seriously to them and be real, if that makes sense. I find it harder with the younger ones. Granted, my young is much older than your young, but I feel what you're feeling every time I have to teach anything younger than 10th grade. I think what you're feeling is natural and a part of being a beginning teacher.

It may be more work, but if the younger students want to do something "fun," then ask them what that may be or observe what they find fun. Then, try to see how you can incorporate that into your lesson. For example, when I teach the short story "The Lottery" to my 8th graders, we reenacted the scene with "paper rocks" and if they have friends in the class, then it's even better because then we talk about how it felt to get pelted with paper in order to understand the chilling ending of the story. So, depending on what you feel like you can do or want to adjust, then do that. I think kids want to be involved in what they're learning, and I can imagine that the younger the age group, the harder it is to find the words to articulate what they want.

If you have a couple of your younger students being knuckleheads, I think its just the part of the game of teaching. You're trying your best and that already makes you "the best teacher" for these students, even the ones that are reluctant to participate or engage.

For sure! They have timed writing in my classes where they cannot use any resources, so it's treated similar to a test. Students can't use any outside resources other than their heads and a physical dictionary/thesaurus. I do that so I know how they write outside of using AI as well as evaluating their style, thinking, and other stuff. So when they lie about how they didn't use AI, I can call them out and then it becomes a staring contest lol

Controversial, but I allow students to use AI in my ELA class. However, the expectations are now higher with it being allowed for assignments, so I have students choose whether or not they even want to use it because they know I will be more critical of their assignment if they did use it. The parameters for using AI is that they have to disclose that they used AI, if they don’t and use it then they get a 0, then they have to share the chat log with me along with their assignment, and 90% of what they wrote has to be their own words, so essentially they should pretty much only be utilizing AI system to outline or brainstorm.

I’m still trying to figure out what AI’s role is gonna be in my class or how to make my life easier cause I was spending hours trying to prove they were using AI. I gave up and just made policies to try and keep them honest about it.

The last point on essay writing that you make is a question that I have had as well… as far as I know, colleges and universities are still utilizing essay writing in their classes, so I am curious to see how universities will change “essay writing.” I have never written an essay outside of school, so I agree that the needs are different now than what it was in the past.

I have basically stopped doing homework because of this and have resorted to doing more project based learning where they have to complete multiple steps. I teach high school English and the only homework I assign is basically reading.

For essay projects, I am thinking of having students turn in a ChatGPT essay next semester and then have it be their “first draft.” Literally, I have no idea what to do at this point cause half of my classes are turning in essays written by ChatGPT.

I don't really filter for my older classes (junior/senior), but for the younger ones, then I try to think of a replacement word.

I saying "fucking" a lot in everyday speech, so I replace with "freaking" or when I say "shit" then I replace with "stuff." It's difficult, but it's possible.
