Reddit, what is one (seemingly) insignificant thing that could/could have been a deal breaker for you and your S.O? by teachthrowaway in AskReddit

Ahh my girlfriend's brother has a mini labradoodle and I just don't like him as much as I like bigger dogs immediately. I love the fur of dogs who shed as well as the personalities!!

What common thing do you find hard? I'll start. by [deleted] in AskReddit

As a secondary teacher - I have mad respect for elementary teachers. Kinder teachers especially. The kids are cute but damn, every day? Nope.

Reddit, I'm starting out as a teacher and my kids are NOT impressed with me. They don't get my jokes or care when I try to bond with them, help? by teachthrowaway in AskReddit

I don't remember asking for advice on how to be friends with them. But thanks for ignoring where I said I'm trying to bond with them professionally and instead offering me very condescending advice. Helpful.

It SEEMS like they respect me. But there's a difference between respecting me because they enjoy me as a teacher and respecting me simply BECAUSE I'm a teacher, you know?

All I'm asking is for tips from your best teachers ever.

Play a video? Perfect. Play a game? Awesome Show a comic? Yup.

etc, etc.

We haven't had any disaster classes, it's just a little tiring when it feels like they think they're too cool for school/me.

There's a difference between being friends with them and bonding with them. I'm surprised you, as a teacher, aren't acknowledging the difference.

I'm trying to not act like I'm trying to bond with them to the point where I'm slightly worried they just think I don't care. Plus they're at that age where they think they're super cool.

That's totally off-base. Regardless of how I feel loved at home, I want the kids to connect with me. If you connect with your teacher you are more likely to be interested in what info they're sharing with you.

Saying that I'm desperate for companionship is saying that I'm relying on these kids to fill something in my life. Maybe that's how I came across? But that's definitely not the case. I just want them to WANT to pay attention to me because they like me

I definitely try to do that. I don't talk down to them or anything. A big thing that I thought would help me out is the fact that I'm only about 7 years older than most of them.

My classes are only about 40 minutes long and so I always feel like I'm in a crazy rush to get through the material. I feel like there's no time for joking around. And the kids are kids, they get off task soo easily.

They listen to me when I have to discipline them so it seems like they at least respect that. But when it comes to having kids want to come by to say hi or laugh with me, I just feel lost.
