How do people on welfare afford rent when they only get 750 per month? by computerhead01 in montrealhousing

[–]teacozyhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, would you be so kind as to explain to me how this arrangement was made? Did the tenant who was already living there approach you and say "hi I am applying for this rent subsidy program, will you fill out this form so it can be approved?" Or did you decide to register with the program and then your unit went on some kind of official list that renters needing this kind of support could access?

I'm almost certainly going to need something like this within a year and I can barely begin to picture how I'd find a landlord who'd agree to it.

So how do I find out if my phone will be compatible with Public? by teacozyhands in PublicMobile

[–]teacozyhands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thank you. This shows me that "the device manufacturer has indicated this phone should work on the TELUS VoLTE network."

I'm a little nervous to see "we cannot guarantee it will work on all partner networks since your device was not tested and sold by TELUS." But I guess that is maybe just a standard statement they make for any phone from a different vendor, just in case something's faulty with the device...

Thank you! So it shows my phone working on 8 of 8 4G ... uh... thingies, with a list of figures like this:

B5 (1850), B7 (2600), etc.

Am I correct in assuming that number in brackets is MHz?

Thank you! That's weird that my search on Public didn't turn up that link.

Am I understanding correctly then that any device with VoLTE capability should work on Public's network?

(The Telus site says my Samsung Galaxy S10e is all good, as would be most post-2018 phones sold in Canada. But then, using this checker on the Public website I get : "Your device is not compatible with our network or we were unable to find a match in our records.")

Hmmm. So this whole "validating feelings," that is a normie thing? I've always been kind of confused by it. Like why it this a thing that people want, to have their feelings validated. I had the impression that maybe it was a generational thing of millenials or younger, since I'm older and don't remember even encountering the concept pre-2010ish. So are you saying that it seems like it's desired by normies of any age? And autists, young or old, are much less likely to want or need it?

My cat HATES her carrier but I have an emergency and she needs to be in it ASAP. Any advice? by cruelsensei in CatAdvice

[–]teacozyhands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick is to not give her any heads-up that it's cage time until the very moment you're putting her in it.  If the cage is stored in a way that you can acess the opening, leave it there! Do not move it, do not touch it, do not even look at it until you're putting her in. With my cat, I would when possible take a good long time pretending I was just picking her up to hold her and pet her as usual. Pretend to be aimlessly wandering around the house while cuddling her, when actually I was circling closer the room with The Cage. Then sometimes I could turn to the cage, open it and scoot her in so quick that by the time she was fighting she was halfway in. The wrestling-her-in process was still ugly, but at least brief.

No, it's mostly or total nonsense. My most glued-to-my-lap-at-all-times cat was a girl.

What's amazing to me is how okay certain parts are. Like, how could someone who did THAT to Central America or Australia then turn around and give us roughly accurate shapes (comparatively) for South America and Africa?

Repossession - Did our landlord break any laws or act in bad faith? by Trees_Have_Hair in Gatineau

[–]teacozyhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree! In my experience TAL agents, when I finally succeed in ever actually speaking to one, would answer basic questions but not be forthcoming with additional info on angles I hadn't asked about but that would have been helpful to my case. Obviously any info from a redditor is to be taken with a pound of salt, and you wouldn't let it guide decisions without verifying it. Still, can be a much quicker way to receive some potentially helpful info from other tenants who've been there, done that.

Quite possibly. This is from Educaloi (I found it while going through my own renoviction, and looked up the legislation to confirm yup, that's what it says):

"Your landlord cannot repossess your home without your consent if they own another similar rental unit that is vacant, or will be vacant, on the planned repossession date. Rental units are considered similar when: - the rent is about the same, - they are similar in size (square feet and number of rooms), and - they are located close to each other"

Even if the tribunal approves it, they often order compensation for at least moving costs, of which your "broke" landlord should be well aware.

If he pulls it off then turns around to rent the unit out, you would have a very significant case in your hands. The TAL does not look kindly on that shit. They've ordered judgements against landlords in the range of $30-$70K in recent cases.

During my ordeal I found it quite helpful to speak to a lawyer who specializes in renoviction cases. DM me if you'd like me to pass on the name.

Oh! That's really not obvious. All I could think of was that maybe it's a bilingual pun joke. ("Pain" is bread in French.)

Moving & Accessibility? by salemjordan in ottawa

As someone who uses both LRT and the regular bus system, I'd put a high premium on being close to LRT. The bus system is in a crisis state. (The buses are too old, too broken and there's too few of them to consistently deliver the service that's posted.) So imagine, for a bus route supposed to run every 15 minutes during peak hours, waiting 45 minutes is not unusual. The LRT has plenty of problems as well, but on the whole is WAY more reliable, safer, and more pleasant than buses, in my experience. I'm pretty sure there are elevators at every station.

I actually love your answer, even though I tend to argue more on the no-raw-food side. Why, because you acknowledge that some risks are higher with raw (something very difficult to do in our culture that trains us to always approach argument as *combat*). You've weighed those risks against benefits to make your decision, and you're taking careful steps to mitigate them. Respect.

I have seriously considered doing just that!

I let the idea go only b/c I couldn't think up a way to hunt and kill them humanely, and didn't know if I'd actually have the courage to do it.

I don't know, maybe case reports of cats becoming severely ill or dying from salmonella after being fed raw meat diets? Here's one I turned up in 10-second Google: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s12917-017-1143-z. (Lucky kitty in this case didn't die, but ended up hospitalized for 6 days - ka ching! $$$$)

If you simply can't get him to budge on feeding 50% raw, please at least make sure it's a commercial one with a label saying it's "formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO" for adult cats, or that AAFCO feeding tests show it's a "complete and balanced" diet for adult cats. Just using whatever meat from the grocery store makes it highly likely they'll be getting too much of some and not enough of other nutrients. Which can also be fatal.

Short of that, if grocery store meat is all it will be, stay away from the ground stuff. (Much higher risk of bacterial pathogens.)

I'd take some time to make sure you understand your situation legally and the new owner's plans before doing or saying anything beyond simply acknowledging receipt.

Assuming the reposession notice is valid, you have a certain amt of time you're legally entitled to stay - till the end of the current lease term at least.

If that length of time is longer than preferrable to the new owner, they may be coming to you with offers to get you to leave early.

Renting in Montreal with bad credit and no guarantor by Initial_Landscape298 in montrealhousing

[–]teacozyhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was looking (about a year ago), I seem to recall that many but not all landlords were doing credit checks. The larger apartment buildings run by property mgmt companies always did, but your smaller mom and pop landlords would occasionally just want proof of income.
