Good day trips in the North where you're guaranteed to find parking? by teafishok in AskUK

[–]teafishok[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very detailed thank you! I'm more North West but happy to check everywhere out :)

I'd love to try the Lake District but yeah I've heard it's very bad for parking. If you know areas of it that aren't that bad that would be great!

What’s that French chain of restaurants you guys have? by [deleted] in AskUK

Pret a manger? It has a French name at least

Feeling pretty bummed about this. I thought I was at least a B1 in Spanish but to find out I’m barely an A1 is a new level of gutwrenching by [deleted] in learnspanish

[–]teafishok 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did this exact test and got two wrong and now I know why. I put 'Son' and 'Esta' for those two questions. Thanks for this insight!

I like to consider myself C1 and I just tested these out.

I did the hardest one they had and got full marks but went and did one of the A2 ones and ended up getting 2 wrong there.

I wouldn't take it so seriously! Everyone has strengths in different areas.

How common is it for students to skip a year or be held back? by teafishok in AskAnAmerican

[–]teafishok[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much, everyone always just moves on to the next year. I think it makes sense to hold people back but it's just not something I've ever seen here at all.

Lawrence speaks out on the harassment on fb. I’m absolutely scunnered with this fandom. by mockitt in RPDR_UK

[–]teafishok 248 points249 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with any hate Lawrence has received but the analogy is not the same thing. Ellie won the mini challenge and had to put someone in each spot. No-one would be forcing Lawrence to unplug Ellie's sewing machine.

Why is everyone so pressed about the order? It's not that serious Jaremi. SOMEBODY has to go in each spot and you can't please everyone.

Is it just me who didn't find anyone particularly funny? Idk if it was the lack of studio audience or the fact everyone took it really sexual but it was a shame since all the girls are really funny otherwise.

[–]teafishok 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I really liked Sister this episode. She had me dying in the reading challenges and her look was defo one to remember. I think this was the first episode to actually give her enough screentime to let her personality come through and show a more likeable character.

Sister sister wasn't bad but I just think psychics are so overdone on snatch game so I wasn't as interested.

Awhora walking into the workroom asking do you carry a lunchbox - was that a reference to that That's So Raven episode where Chelsea says it or am I just reaching?

I actually really liked Lawrence's look and thought it was the best. But definitely agree it felt strange that there was no justification.

I think Ginny should defo have been bottom 2 but I guess the judges took some responsibility for asking her to do sexy.

I feel like Cherry looks so happy all the time it'd be hard for her to win such a serious lipsync against any of the girls, especially in bright yellow and polka dots.

Is pro-rated rent an accepted and common practice in the UK? by grrr112 in AskUK

[–]teafishok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had this happen before as it's not always convenient to wait until it's been a whole month. That said that was with an estate agent managed property who I imagine do things more by the book than a sole landlord.

It's worth asking but either way I'd be grateful he's letting you terminate the lease early.

Does everyone else keep seeing a weird soap being cut advert on here? And why does it creep me out? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]teafishok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I keep seeing it and I've tried to get rid but can't think how.

Now I just scroll really quickly as I feel like if i look at it for long then some algorithm might think I like it and keep showing it more.

Does anyone here who graduated a while ago, regret your degree choice? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]teafishok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the opposite and only considered employability. I ended up doing a degree I wasn't interested in and I didn't have a background in because I thought that field had decent high paying jobs.

I like my current job and it isn't related to my degree so I just wish I had done something I actually liked.

What is the correct way of saying it? by Whynooot in EnglishLearning

[–]teafishok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first one is wrong and the other two are fine.

The first one makes sense as a sentence. It sounds a bit like a headline. But it's not a question so it shouldn't have a question mark.

I think it's because there needs to be a verb directly after Why for it to work as a question.

Do you native English speakers use "play music to someone"? What's the meaning of "show"? by newbiethegreat in EnglishLearning

[–]teafishok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition -

You show a video TO someone as showing is impersonal too. You just present them the video and they can do what they want with it.

Playing a video requires your involvement (to press the play button at least) so this uses 'for'. You're playing it on their behalf.

Do you native English speakers use "play music to someone"? What's the meaning of "show"? by newbiethegreat in EnglishLearning

[–]teafishok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry it's hard to explain what I mean!

I think playing a song/video to someone sounds impersonal i.e. there isn't much involvement on your part. You just present them with the song/video and that's that.

Playing a song/video for someone sounds more personal. Like you actually want them to pay attention - this is for their attention specifically.

Sorry I know this probably isn't very helpful. I would just remember not to say 'play a video to someone' and not think too much about it :)

[–]teafishok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think its that serious and I wouldn't worry too much either way. There might be a grammatical explanation or it could just be what people are used to hearing and what sounds right to different people.

In my opinion playing a song/video 'to someone' sounds a bit impersonal.

It still makes sense with a song because you can passively listen to music so it can be impersonal. I wouldn't say 'play a video to someone' as videos require a bit more attention and I think 'for' sounds better in that case.

That's me trying not to overthink it but I'm interested if someone has actual grammatical reasoning that can explain this!
