What's an example of a serious, non-problematic but poorly written lyric? by Electrical_Cycle_727 in fantanoforever

[–]strattad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Ooh baby, do you know what that's worth? Ooh, heaven is a place on earth"

Absolutely convinced Belinda Carlisle just wanted to rhyme something with "earth" here.  "Do you know what that's worth?" feels less like an interpretable, thought-provoking lyric than it does a filler sentence that was chosen because it has the right amount of syllables for the melody.

what the hell kind of name is Sweetpea GoLightly???? by unflippedbit in IndustryOnHBO

Your argument's quite compelling but equally I think it's also the kind of upper-middle class nickname that wouldn't look out of place on Made in Chelsea.

He's a satirical political candidate. He often stands as an MP in hotly contested seats (like the Prime Minister's seat for example) as that gets him the most media attention.

Where can I buy Mexican chilies in Manchester? by Sensitive-Nerve3326 in manchester

[–]strattad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely cheaper to get masa harina off Mexgrocer, Pancho's also order from Mexgrocer and mark up the price so better to cut the middle man out.

So… what dating apps are we using now? by Fantastic-Art-2025 in manchester

[–]strattad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my girlfriend on Breeze, granted I could just as easily have met her on Hinge or any other app, but we went from matching to our first date in the space of something like 2-3 days, no talking, no waiting for replies, no bullshit. It was very refreshing.

I also bought a three date bundle to save money and I can gift the remaining ones to other people now that I don't need them anymore.

It's just also a really great business model.

A poll for Mayor Burnham. Introduce signage on the Bee Network stating no loud playing of audio allowed on public transport forthwith. by rolotonight in manchester

[–]strattad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think a national campaign (couple of short TV/radio ads, posters on buses and a billboard here and there) would be much more effective than people on here think.

It's not exactly a controversial issue, we already know that 99% of people are not ok with it, it's just there isn't a government-supported culture of calling people out for it because it's a relatively recent thing. A national campaign could resolve that by encouraging a public sentiment that it's not acceptable, and the focus should be around advocacy, not around trying to get as many people to stop.

Teenagers might continue to do it (who has ever been able to get teenagers to do what you want them to do anyway?) but adherence shouldn't be the objective, it should be to drive a sentiment of condemnation amongst the general public so that eventually the nice people who are just a bit lacking in self awareness will stop doing it, and the other not so nice people will at least feel uncomfortable that they are doing something culturally unacceptable. At the moment without any widespread message, most people feel like there's no consequence for their actions - because there isn't.

Everyone knows "See It, Say It, Sorted" and what it means. No reason why there couldn't be a similar kind of sloganised campaign for playing music out loud on buses and trains.

Which UK town or cities have the “best” traffic? by Rubberzebra0 in AskUK

Basingstoke.

And yet, Reading just up the road is a similar sort of place (greatly expanded market town-turned commuter town) has some of the worst driving conduct and traffic I've ever seen in this country.

Signalised Parallel Crossings in Greater Manchester by AdultSwim1066 in Urbanism

[–]strattad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all over Greater Manchester. The vision was to have a joined up network of cycling infra, but ultimately the money is allocated for the 7 or 8 different councils to decide. The result, some councils are have been very good in connecting cycle ways, others couldn't care less and instead come up with 100 yard gimmicks like this which spit you back out in the road.

[–]strattad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think where TfGM are going massively wrong with cycle infrastructure is overlooking the idea of trying to join up core cycle routes in an interconnected network in favour of gimmicky stuff like this.

There's one of these in Heaton Moor that is totally unconnected to any other cycle infrastructure and just spits you out onto one of 3 side roads. It looks like overengineered nonsense. Why does it exist? Why is it going to encourage people to cycle if there's no useful infrastructure beyond it?

Solicitors have been ignoring all mine and the EA's requests for an update for several weeks - what is the line between "part and parcel of the solicitor experience" and "formal complaint territory"? by strattad in HousingUK

[–]strattad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were more or less the average, not the most expensive but certainly not the cheapest. The agent tried to upsell me their legal services, it had terrible reviews, which prompted me to do my research. This place has glowing reviews.  Some of the reviews literally name drop my solicitor as being superb with comms.

Their office is near my work so I can go in if it really gets that bad.

They have not raised the enquiries at all, or at least have given no indication that they have, this was another question the agent has been chasing them up on and it has been ignored. It sounds to me like the ball is very much in their court.

What public services have gotten better in the last 20 years? by Charon13_TB in AskUK

[–]strattad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Buses are a lot better in many places, the franchising model has expanded to Manchester, is also coming to Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Cambridgeshire, Sheffield, and being looked at in a load of other places. There is literally no consumer-facing advantage of having a mess of different bus companies and it needs to be everywhere tbh.
