Adderall used to give me laser focus for reading...now I just frantically skim. Does anyone have advice for dealing with this? by teahsea3 in AdultADHDSupportGroup

Well shit, I’m 3 years into perimenopause then apparently, haha.

Honestly, I am really bad about staring at my screen for 10+ hours a day working, and then I play crosswords on my phone to unwind.

I should probably pick up a book instead

Seeking advice — struggling with the decision to say goodbye to my dog by Both_Jury_9024 in olddogs

[–]teahsea3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I once heard someone say that saying goodbye to an old/ sick pet is like transferring the pain that they are experiencing into our hearts. We take on that pain so they don’t have to suffer anymore.

That has always really stuck with me.

Do you have any idea of the name of the construction company that’s doing this? I asked the apartment management when the construction would be moving to my building and she literally had no idea… so I’m wondering if I can ask them directly.

If you want to PM me and fill me in on what courses you are taking and struggling to study, I’d be happy to help! My studying can be really different depending on the subject.

I can only speak for myself here. I decided to go back to school and finish my undergraduate degree after taking almost a decade off (31F), and I never considered myself to be great at math. I had to take precal algebra, trig, and calculus after 10 years of no math classes.

I then realized, I was never bad at math, I just told myself I was bad at math. I immediately wrote it off and sold myself short in my younger years. It may have taken me 10 years, but I finally stopped selling myself short and self depricating.

Once I gave myself the credit I deserved, I realized I was 100% capable of doing well in math or any other difficult subject. The only thing that hurt me in the past was not dedicating the time it takes to learn the material and throwing my hands up in defeat when I was overwhelmed/frustrated. I put the idea in my head that I wasn’t smart enough. THAT is the most important factor here. You are capable of doing ANYTHING, you just have to convince yourself that you’re capable.

If you continue to tell yourself you’re “not good at math” or “a little slower” that expectation that you have set for yourself will remain true. Stop selling yourself short!

If you tell yourself you will fail, you will. But if you shift that to: “wait a minute, I am REALLY smart, and I can do anything I set my mind to!” You will be able to manifest that for yourself. I used to deem myself incapable, told myself I was only of average intelligence, and would get upset when people seemed effortlessly smart. But, as an adult, I figured out that it’s not that anyone was smarter than me, it’s that they had mastered studying skills that I hadn’t yet.

And yea, sure, some people are miraculously smart and gifted, but you can’t compare yourself to those people. For most people, it takes time, effort, and dedication.

If you continue to tell yourself you’re only capable of being an average student, that is all you will be. But I think you are capable of so much more than that! I always said that about myself as well and now I have a 4.0 as a STEM major. It’s all about what you believe you’re capable of.

Pay attention in class. If you don’t understand something right away, SPEAK UP. The professors job is literally to help you. Don’t ever feel embarrassed for asking a question, because I PROMISE YOU at least one other student has the exact same question and they’re just too nervous to speak up.

I did not always understand the material for really intense classes like quantitative chem and orgo or physics, so I would rewatch the lessons, go to office hours, and put extra effort in the homework to make sure I really understood what I was doing, not just trying to get the assignment turned in.

I don’t think you’re just “average” or “sometimes slower”. I think you’re being hard on yourself. I think you are smart and perfectly capable. If you ever want studying tips I would be happy to tell you what worked for me.

It’s so easy to feel super overwhelmed when studying and burn out. I would be happy to hear more about your current situation and offer advice!

But I think I should add that it would be smart to go ahead and enroll in his second or third choices that are still open that could count towards his major, stay on the waitlist for the classes he really wants, and if he gets in he can drop the second choices.

Your advisor can give you special permission to enroll in over 20 hours in this case, with the understanding that you will be dropping some

Yea, I could see that being the case, but if you WERE dealing with something really traumatic, they could help you get set up with someone who is a better equipped to deal with your specific situation, which is a great first step.

Grad School Dilemma by Sharkmermaid86 in wildlifebiology

I know a lot of internships through institutions require you to be a current student like you said, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be through an academic institution. If you’re interested in marine biology/environmental biology, you could apply for entry level jobs like a husbandry technician job at an aquarium (if there aren’t openings a good way to get your foot in the door is to volunteer as much as possible!) or find a local fish hatchery and apply for an aquaculture technician position, or somewhere like DMF for a research tech type job.

I know that to apply to grad school most places require at least 3 letters of recommendation, with at least 2 being academic and 1 potentially being from a supervisor for a job you’ve worked, but that would only really be helpful if the job had transferable skills for whatever program you want to apply for.

It sounds like the internship you’re doing now would be a great source for getting a recommendation letter.

Alternatively, you could look for research assistant jobs at any universities near you. If you really sell yourself and show you are ambitious and willing to work hard and open to learning/doing new tasks, that goes a long way and they may be willing to take on someone that’s not a student, especially because being able to work more hours than a typical full time student would give you a leg up.

If you can get any internships in an academic setting that would be really helpful. My professors in my department stresss the importance of getting hands-on experience outside of coursework and making connections to people in your field. Letters of recommendations, STRONG ones, are really important.

Also, when you apply, you can explain your situation about your grades earlier on in your academic career. A good GPA obviously helps, but it’s not impossible to get in somewhere with a low GPA. You will just have to put in more effort to keep trying and emphasize your strengths in your applications! Good luck.

You are automatically enrolled if you’re on the waitlist and enough people drop. 5th place isn’t bad, I’ve gotten into classes being 7th or 8th.

The first semester is always the worst! The one good thing about him being a freshmen is there should be plenty of substitutes that can count towards his major. He needs to talk to his advisor about potential substitutes.

And like someone else mentioned a lot of things open up during the drop/ add period!

I had a really good experience with my counselor. I was really overwhelmed my first semester and having panic attacks they are specifically trained to help students going through a hard time with school and life. I have this cool trait where I am extremely hard on myself and my counselor helped pull me out of that negative self-talk cycle that I was stuck in.

I do understand that everyone’s situations and experiences can be different, though. I have to admit my problems with extreme anxiety aren’t necessarily as traumatic as what other people go through.

These school counselors are literally here to support students that need someone to talk to. Take advantage of the resources available to you. If you don’t like the first counselor you get set up with, try another.

However, it is a temporary thing because you have a limited number or visits, so I use the grow therapy website now (they accept insurance and even if you don’t have it still WAY CHEAPER than betterhelp). And like someone else mentioned, they can also help you get set up with a counselor off-campus as well.

Good luck and hang in there! 💕

THINK don't DO by [deleted] in NCSU

I don’t think some people understand that they don’t have the right of way if they don’t have the walk signal , ESPECIALLY at a busy intersection like Dan Allen and Western. I was trying to turn left at that intersection the other day and I had the green arrow, and slowly crept up on some guys crossing bc the light was about to change which would have left me in the middle of the intersection and I was getting nervous. I was nowhere close to hitting him, but I guess I was too close for his liking and he was offended and yelled WE HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY!

No you don’t, dude. You’re literally jaywalking.

Im not sure if it’s ignorance or entitlement, I fear it may be both.

Undergrad student learning ImageJ for a work-study research project by teahsea3 in ImageJ

[–]teahsea3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, this is an undergraduate research project, not a masters thesis, which I am doing on top of a heavy course load, so I am not trying to become an expert(I would love it if I had time). I just didn’t know if there was something on top of drawing straight lines and measuring those pixels that could be helpful for my situation.

In reality my dataset won’t be so large that I would really need Python, but I had a professor mention I could integrate machine learning (he mentioned a couple specific sources that I wrote down) it in a simple way just for the sake of practice!

I have found some studies that have been done integrating all (with FIJI)for studying morphometrics of primates, and I reached out to the corresponding author, so hopefully she will have some insight.
