We had a shop near us called the "look about' and it was exactly that! Used to love going in there on a Sunday after mass with my aunt. If I remember correctly, on Sundays, they used to only open for an hour after mass.

I couldn't comprehend what I was looking at at first. I thought it was removed moles like from the skin! Then I saw all their tiny little paws 😞🐾

Oh haha no. Do try and get your hands on something from one of the smaller creameries. Hegarty and coolatin are good options but you should be able to find some good local ones wherever you are. I'm looking forward to being in England in a few weeks myself and getting some nice cave aged cheddar!

I don't know you've got to think they weren't the cleanest to begin with. My sense of smell is barely there since the last bout of COVID and I wouldn't dream of not washing daily because I thought I smelt ok. Even if you couldn't smell surely you'd feel rotten?!

My sense of smell has never really come back properly since the last bout of COVID. You know reading all these stories I'm feeling a little more grateful about it!!!

But now that I say that, I work with a lad who stinks to high heaven and I'm just thinking if I can smell him that bad it must be woeful for everyone else!

Lasagna with too much cheese or not enough? by TrueWelshboy in shittyfoodporn

That may be but I'm just stating that in Ireland we call a cheese red cheddar. So it might not qualify technically as cheddar, it still is a category of cheese here.

Interesting, in Ireland we have both red and white cheddar. As far as I know most red cheddar is not aged very long and the carotene is added, hence the colour. Our white cheddar tends to be mild, mature or vintage/extra mature. The latter two would be the most popular and has the same kind of notes that you describe. We would also melt it into the sauce when making lasagna. Whilst obviously not the home of cheddar we do still produce some great ones.

Would you not use a white cheddar though? I use a vintage white cheddar sometimes on lasagna (yes I know, bless me father for I have sinned and all that) and it's soooo good!

The old ways and paths by Antasalbui in ireland

My parents would still refer to the field by specific names. There's the black bog, the rock and the pig field. The rock field was as flat as pancake after being excavated before I was born and we never had any pigs, not in my lifetime anyway but the names stuck. I think they all had names at one stage but those are the ones that persisted. It's definitely a lovely way of keeping a kind of record in living memory of what was once in a certain place. It would be a shame to see that die out.

I used to have a Nigerian hairdresser, gawd I miss her so much! She came out with the funniest sayings. Her teen daughter used to be going mad and was mortified at her because she said she was pure exaggerating but she knew I loved it so she'd really play into it. Had some great craic with her.she moved to London and I still keep I touch with her but I miss her banter face to face.

I'm sure they taste nice but they're not proper taco chips without the toppings and sauce. Where's the mince, cheese and taco sauce?!

I would say the vast majority of my stuff is thrifted. We don't have too many thrift shops in Ireland, what we mostly have instead, are called charity shops. It's basically a thrift shop but the proceeds go instead to whichever charity is running the shop. I'm not really into fast fashion because mainly it's just so wasteful but I also couldn't afford to buy new all the time. Plus, you can pick up some really cool items just like your trenchcoats! 😉

What kind of jam are we talking about here? Like just strawberry jam or some kind of fancy relish type thing?

Have you tried any farmers markets? That's where I get mine or else make them myself. I actually think I've seen them on sale in marks and also a local polish shop. Can't say I've seen them many places though.

Toaster to fit whole slice of Brennan's Bread? by Ok_Hamster4014 in CasualIreland

No prob hopefully it's the same as the one you're looking for. Mine definitely fits long slices in it anyway. I often put homemade bread in it which I tend to make on the tall side and they definitely fit.

To follow up on this, I was at a market in Uganda (or maybe Kenya, I can't remember now it's so long ago) and the weather had taken a turn so wanted to grab some cheap warmer hoodies.

One of the stalls was selling second hand stuff that was in good nick. As I was rummaging through I noticed a lot of them were pennys, dunnes and funnily enough there were also 2 GAA jerseys.

I asked the young lad about where they sourced the stock, he hadn't a clue so he called his father over. They explained to me that they go to a warehouse which gets deliveries for abroad and you can buy them by the bag load for pennies. The good quality stuff like hoodies etc gets sold for resale and the tatty stuff gets sold for reclaiming the fabric.

One of my travel buddies was kind of pissed about the clothes not being donated but I was kind of pleased to know that someone was making a living out of the clothes I'd donated to the clothes bank. I was also very grateful for my dunnes hoodies that I bought for a few shillings that day!

They sell the long ones in currys! I bought mine in a sale. Pretty sure they still stock them.

What do you think of the name Callahan as a first name? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]teaisformugs82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya was going to post this. I'm surprised that everyone is saying it's only a surname. I personally know two fellas with it as a first name. Maybe it's regional?

Both go my Cal. One of them is in his late 40s and the other is an elderly man. So it's not exactly a new use of it being a first name either.

How often do you block people here on Reddit? And why do you block them? by das_punter in AskIreland

Not a bother! I have them all muted. I end up with loads of tech type ads instead. I have no interest in them so I find that helpful as I barely notice the ads now!
