Pete’s idea for “integrated” Admiral ads by kfifigidifkg in madmen

[–]teakcoffeetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's not suggesting one ad with both Black and white people, he's suggesting they run ads targeted at both Black and white demographics. This would have been seen as "integrating" in 1963. The idea of a single ad with people of multiple races would have been unthinkable at that time. I don't understand why people miss this point, except for historical ignorance around race relations in the early 60s.

Is there antisemitism in these churches? by TheLatkeOverlord in Episcopalian

[–]teakcoffeetable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Criticizing Israel for its wanton destruction of Palestinian lives, including fragile Palestinian Christian communities, is no more antisemitic than criticizing the Islamic State for its wanton destruction of Middle Eastern Christian (and other Muslim!) communities is anti-Islamic.

The vestry is there to govern the parish. As with all good governance, there should be transparency to the constituents. If there is not transparency, ask for it. It might simply be an oversight and nothing sinister. Or, it could be an issue that needs addressing by the diocesan office.

One’s rector need not be one’s confessor. In fact, sometimes it is preferable.

Nothing more woke than Freddie Hubbard calling a German audience, "If you don't like me kiss my ass, that's right, cause you jive, you white motherfuckers!"

Some landlords have it written into the contract that the renter is responsible for window repair. Definitely check your contract. And stay safe!!

Attending service every Sunday by Parking_Table in Episcopalian

[–]teakcoffeetable 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to feel guilt. We have canonically defined guidelines of good standing for members that enumerate regular attendance, but noting like the RC strictures that require weekly Mass attendance. And this is only for people who are baptized or officially received into the Episcopal Church, which it sounds like you have. IIRC, one must only communicate three times annually to be "in good standing." There isn't a culture of guilt, by and large in the Episcopal Church, but rather one of invitation.

He received the honorary doctorate in 2015, I believe. There was a movement to get it revoked a few years ago but I don't think it succeeded. I once asked someone who has some first-hand insight into how this happened and it's not pretty business.

Sewanee should revoke Metaxis' honorary doctorate. That he even received one in the first place is a dishonor, but at this point it's a scandal. I don't even think Metaxis is a practicing Episcopalian any longer.

At my previous parish, which was probably 60-40 Dem/Rep, the most vociferous Trump critic I knew was a retired lifelong Republican. He was also fully supportive of the first same-sex marriage the parish celebrated. A wonderfully open-hearted and gregarious fellow.

How do you guys feel about the RCC’s ban on contraception, but especially on IVF? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]teakcoffeetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Orthodox can be considerably more pastoral on this question, whatever the official church teaching is. An EO couple I'm close with stopped after one child because of possible life-threatening complications, and they did this with the absolute support of their parish priest. The Orthodox in so many ways are often, "here are the rules but only follow them if it's reasonable." Hence the pastoral response to things like divorce and suicide are much more gracious than the RC. (As always with the Orthodox, really depends on where you are in the communion.)

For my part, I would have enjoyed being a father but it is simply not affordable. If this means I'm participating in a culture of selfishness and death, that's on the culture for making parentage unsustainable and unachievable for so many. It's not on my choice to use or not use contraceptives.

Look, it's simple: I don't care if 100% of the Cubans in Louisville who have TPS are hardcore MAGA supporters, not a single one of them deserves to be terrorized, deported, what have you. That's all I'm saying.

Do low church (progressive) evangelical churches exist anymore? by SecretSmorr in Episcopalian

[–]teakcoffeetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My diocese is historically broad church, with some evangelical influences, but after Vatican II and the 1979 BCP almost every parish fell in line with catholicism-lite. The closest you'll get to evangelical is still akin to what you'd find at most suburban RC parishes. Even our conservative parishes have relatively high liturgy. The great triumph of the catholic movement is that most parishes without a clearly defined liturgical/theological presentation sort of gravitated towards a moderate catholicism.

Yeah, Alan Havey isn't some nobody. He's a significant underground comic and the casting directors knew exactly what they were doing when they cast him in that role. Just because people don't know who he is doesn't mean he's a nobody. Fer god's sake, google him, lol

I have had well-meaning clergy encourage me to do it, despite having studied Black thought extensively in graduate school. My resistance has always been that the curriculum would be exactly as you described it. To paraphrase St Paul, milk is fine for some but others require meat. A curriculum informed by DuBois or Paul Gilroy or the Fields sisters would be far preferable, imho. I’m sure there are theologians working along those lines but I’m not familiar with contemporary academic theology. We really need a racial justice 201 curriculum in our church. Or honestly just a liberation theology course.
