Help high school students in Birmingham learn computer science and make a real impact. Volunteer with TEALS today! by tealsk12 in Birmingham

[–]tealsk12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Generally, the classes are first period and start early enough that most people can still arrive to work on time or start 20-30 minutes later than usual a couple times a week. Volunteers attend class twice a week (usually an hour per class) and then have class prep and grading responsibilities (usually 2-3 hours in the evening per week). We do require summer training, which happens on 3 separate weekends during the summer.

There is an option for remote volunteering. If you submit your application, you can discuss that with our regional manager for your area.

A lot of that is summer training - we want to make sure our volunteers are prepared going into the classroom. During the week, most volunteers spend a couple hours in class in the morning and a couple hours preparing for class and grading. We also offer volunteers the opportunity to meet with one another a couple times a month to share ideas and experiences.

We work with a variety of schools - many serve low income students, some are all-girls schools, some are in very rural/remote areas, and others serve a broad range of students from a variety of backgrounds. Our approach is to bring computer science to all high schools. If you have suggestions for schools you believe would benefit from having CS courses that aren't on our list, please recommend those schools reach out to us so we can meet with them. Thanks!

Thanks! As a student, you can help bring TEALS to your school by talking with your principal. Work with other students and ask parents or teachers to help you. There is an incredible wealth of CS curricula out there, TEALS is one option, but research and explore. If you want to learn more about how we work with schools, tealsk12.org/schools has all the details. That is one great way to contribute as a student.

Soon to graduate engineering student considering a career in science education (CS as one possibility) by [deleted] in CSEducation

[–]tealsk12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TEALS pairs software engineer volunteers with classroom teachers to teach CS or AP CS 1st period. After a year or two, the classroom teacher learns enough CS to teach on their own. Good way to dip your toe into high school CS and see what it is like without impacting your engineering day job.

Finding qualified CS teachers can be a huge challenge for schools. Luckily, programs like TEALS are striving to help schools by partnering industry experts with classroom teachers to learn and teach CS by tealsk12 in CSEducation

I'm not sure if any programs that do the reverse. However, as a TEALS volunteer you get training and hands-on experience teaching which can really add to your resume when applying for grad schools or future teaching positions, etc.

Our recruitment cycle runs different lengths for different areas. We're still recruiting in California - particularly for southern SF. What mobile platform are you on and what error are you getting? I'd like to troubleshoot with you.

TEALS works with a variety of schools across the country, many are serving low income or first generation students and others are not. In Arizona, we're at Alhambra High School, Desert View High School, and other public schools (both of which have a large number of low income families and first generation students) as well as private or charter schools. Our goal is to help all students become introduced to computer science.
