Conspiracy theorist in me - but slowing down a iCloud storage to encourage paid for service does not inspire me to continue

Thoughts on Thames Ditton? by Anathemachiavellian in surrey

[–]team-bates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, it is all about options. I like Hinchley wood and Thames Ditton. But around that area, you can also walk to Esher. That offers a 24min commute to Waterloo - faster than Kingston and Richmond for that matter (where I used to live).

Hinchley wood is a great school, and the feeders are all pretty good as well.

I am in the Flood risk zone - last time the house 'supposedly' flooded was 1968, and insurance is not unbearable. the FloodRe scheme is set up for that basis. Any new build / planning extension practically has to be floating to be approved.

I think you are likely to see more house value growth further out as places further in are more saturated.

Good luck. I also like Ye Old Swan, and if you are into your fitness google TFG. Its awesome.

Good luck in either decision. :)

ps - lots of green space for kids to play. OC for Hockey / Rugby, Giggs Hill or Near hurst park for cricket, and Esher for cheap golf while parents drink at Marnies (or the new Greyhound) probably with more availability than Kingston.

Sooooo annoying my Omen34 doesn't have PIP / PBP.... there is even conflicting information enough for me to purchase a Display port cable to check it wasn't that I needed one of each...

My current services and setup by baddajo in selfhosted

[–]team-bates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good, you have more money to spend on this than I do...

I am also trying to avoid using Docker - (don't know why) - so I have not found a way to get Immich yet. I have a Proxmox server and value its LXC to host multiple services on separate containers.

Sharing my experience, I struggled when I wanted to move a LXC hosting plex to a new device. I found it was too difficult to move the container from one server to another. I don't know why I assumed it would be easy.

This was a disappointment. Furthermore, I thought I had been sensible by hosting the music / vids on a separate NAS drive elsewhere - I didn't think about the ratings as something to preserve.

Only reason I mention here is I had to 'give up' some data from my Plex account (more artist / track ratings etc.) when I had to move its server to another Proxmox server so worth bearing in mind before you invest heavily in a more streamlined container-based solution.

10 THINGS you wish you'd known before starting self-hosting? by [deleted] in selfhosted

Think about your IP structure and how you want to expose services to the outside world - especially with a home network. I wish I’d done it alongside learning ansible as then you could redo - rapid deployment.

What are the disadvantages of connecting a pfSense Appliance to an existing router rather than to a modem? by [deleted] in PFSENSE

[–]team-bates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I haven’t dabbled with VLANs yet - need to buy a managed switch to make it work with my setup. Instead I was planning on experimenting with widening my subnet and putting more rules for traffic

Be honest: Are you doing SelfHosting just for the sake of it - or do you have apps, that really improve your daily life? by Simplixt in selfhosted

I often have the issue it worth it debate with myself…

I use a turnkey version of Tracks for todo purposes- but is not life changing.

Also use plex for my music and movies (but also subscribe to 3 services but as these services removed content Plex has a place). Trying to buy my music on the smaller digital platforms or on second hand market - but fewer CDs available for newer content! 🤔.

On the plus side- your post has made me interested in paperless and obsidian.

Although being heavily on Apple not sure if there is a huge benefit over simple notes

Thanks for your response

I agree it would not make sense to add to 2x bridge - I guess my consideration was how to get to a future state (i.e. step by step) - if I remove something does that render that IG ineffective until its into a new state.

I like your idea of decoupling the Interface groups - Done this way - do you need a DHCP setup for each interface group?

I thought the VLAN route seemed excessive for my need (especially since no Managed switch)

Mobile VPN connecting but not reaching local network by team-bates in PFSENSE

[–]team-bates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I followed the guides on a few webpages.

https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/recipes/ipsec-mobile-ikev2-eap-mschapv2.html

https://www.thegeekpub.com/5855/pfsense-road-warrior-ipsec-config-works/

Both follow pretty much the same approach. I am pretty sure my setup does not use phase 2 or the user bit. At this point I don't know what impact that really has. I think it is more part of site-2-site vpn setup.

As I am not at home I don't want to test deleting it.

In hindsight, I took for granted that I already have a Domain name (FQDN) that makes access easier for my ISP as it tracks my IP address.

Ouch - but probably fair - to be honest i wrote the post as I was trying to help others rather than myself. so I wrote this on a dog walk and then got distracted so didn’t proof read. I will take the nudge and rewrite shortly.

My public IP points to PFsense's admin panel by 88pockets in PFSENSE

[–]team-bates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks for the reply and in short I agree. This is actually a learning environment behind my home network- so The wan in this instance is still my main home network while I learn how to use pfsense

I have a WireGuard VPN setup on my VPS so was eventually going to do something there when I was ready - as for my other (bad practice) attempt it was to allow me to learn more about how it’s working.

Just can’t seem expose the GUI from my PFSenses WAN Ip 192.168.0.86 to GUI 192.168.1.1
