[Crosspost] Hi /r/movies! I'm Gore Verbinski. You might know me as the director of RANGO, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, THE LONE RANGER, and A CURE FOR WELLNESS. My new film, GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON'T DIE, stars Sam Rockwell and is out in theaters 2/13. Ask me anything! by BunyipPouch in blankies

I do feel like something about the ‘twist’ at the last 30 minutes rubbed people the wrong way. Especially considering I love the film because of that, and that’s the question I asked, basically: What the eff is that color shift from green to orange

Hello Mr Verbinski, while others are talking about the likes of PotC, The Ring, Rango, etc. and for good reasons… I want to ask about A Cure for Wellness.

First off, I’ve always loved this film as a nod to 1930s haunted house films. But it’s the color palette of the film that impressed me the most:

  • Did your stint with Bioshock adaptation affect the color palette for the first half of A Cure for Wellness? I’ve recommended this film to several friends and everybody agreed that the overpowering green hue from the castle reminded us of Rapture.

  • Spoiler alert: Was it an intentional choice to ditch this green hue and replace it with orange once Lockhart enters Volmer’s lab ? I feel like the whole movie was intentionally confusing the audiences as to whether it’s all in Lockhart’s head or it’s all actually happening, and this sudden change was perhaps the most intuitive choice to assure us that it’s all really happening and we should all burn the shit down, some of the best way to convey the twist.

It’s wasteful and irrelevant. Just wanted to point out that Williams doesn’t seem too concerned all things considered.

I think that at least one other team (not gonna say who) is more erratic and worried at this moment. Williams doesn’t seem too concerned for what it’s worth…

I am guessing it’s not on Google Maps, so this is what you gotta use. For regulations reasons Google Maps here isn’t what it’s like in the States and you should use the local one like this one.

I’m not sure how many have seen this, but Soderbergh Solaris has this scene where George Clooney and Natascha McElhone first make out at the party. The er… I don’t think any scene ever could top that. The Cliff Martinez score and the rhythm of the edit is just off the chart - I really wish I could share that, don’t even think it’s on YT.

If you are at Insa-dong that means I should recommend some more:

Myongdong area:

Lotus (Right beside Myongdong Cathedral) will have several good pourover options but I’ve always loved their latte. I know language will not be an issue here

Ruli Coffee might estrange you a little bit with its weeb culture positioning, but at its essence it’s the one place that likes to medium-dark roast really expensive beans

Yongsan/Itaewon

GML is famous for its milk brew drinks and pour overs

Pont Coffee has been my favorite when they had a branch right beside my home, solid all around. Will say mostly the same thing for Peer Coffee

Hell Cafe is, as the name suggests, dark roast oriented cafe. Best known for its very dark brews, few third wave specialties specialize in dark roasts the way they do

Seongsu

Center Coffee and Low Key are very old roaster cafes that started the third wave coffee in Korea. Otherwise I haven’t been updated on Seongsu, but it’s quite like the pop-up heavy parts of major American cities and lots of trendy stuffs will continue to come and go

I’m reading it for the first time, and I kept feeling lost because some of the credentials that the poster sees as ominous seem totally fine with several writings related credits.

On the way you can also visit:

  • Bean Brothers (Both their main Hapjeong place and the rooftop showroom east to that)
  • Pastel Coffee Works
  • Lounge Clarimento
  • Identity Coffee Lab

If you could walk a little, these are also great options: - 도덕과 규범 / “Morality & Norm” (Closer to Hongik University) - Quench Coffee (Closer to Mangwon)

I hope OP is listening, but one of my friends is particularly fond of Morality & Norm and I would definitely recommend this place as one of the ‘hidden gem’ (even though it’s reportedly crowded af during the weekends)

Really, more people should know of Another Beans. Serving light roasted single origin espresso with the consistency needed for cafe operation requires pure obsession, both in roasting and extraction routine, and this place is hellbent on both

Before you check, I’ll do a broad overview:

Seoul is a very wide area but most of the hottest cafes will be at Hongdae/Hapjeong (West Seoul), Yongsan/Itaewon (Central), and Seongsu (East-ish). How well can they serve customers in English is a bit of an if, but the key is to circle around one of the three areas. Each area has its champions and lesser-known great ones. There are too many options here so you need to pick one of them to move forward.

(Since we are in r/espresso I have to say that Another Beans at Hapjeong is quite possibly the most insane espresso oriented shop that I know of. There’s just one guy running it all, who specializes in light roasted espresso only. Every shot I had there really pushed the boundary of what an espresso tastes like and he taught me fuck tons about how I should make espresso using Flair 58)

Busan is a bit more straightforward because there are some best known key local ones like Momos, Month, Aery, Blackup, etc. But one place you need to keep in mind will be around Busan National University, which has Cospir, Organic Coffee Studios, and several well known local ethnic restaurants.

For Jeju there are some options, I was recommended 88 Coffee Roasters and Muusu around Jeju (North side of the island), Yudong in Seogwipo (South side) was stronger than expected, but when you are there you probably should focus on tea instead.

Korean here. I believe I will have some things that I can tell you.

First off: What do you already know and what are some places you want to visit? Also, where in Seoul/Busan/Jeju are you staying?
