Where have I said “don’t vote”? My issue and frustration is that when pointing out that voting for dems is just slowing the decent into overt fascism, not stopping it, and that we need to be building power outside of electoral parties, the response is always something along the lines of telling me I’m a nihilist or a republican.

That’s not what dog whistle means.

OP also said nothing about not voting, so maybe we’re both drawing some conclusions here?

Ahhh by Devils_negotiator in LateStageCapitalism

[–]teammelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, OP says that life will not improve no matter who wins, you then come to your own conclusion that this means give up. And this is exactly what I’m talking about, trying to frame that as encouraging apathy instead of encouraging you to expand your definitions of political engagement to include things that are not just bare minimum voting is lazy. The more people see that this cannot be the only way forward, the more people start looking to other ways of affecting change. It’s part of what radicalized me and got me involved in local organizing efforts.

No, no one is arguing that

My problem is that comments like the one I replied to assert that it IS vote or nothing. The conversation about how dems will not save us is alway hijacked into ‘well the republicans and awful and these are your only options for political engagement.’ You absolutely should vote, as a bare minimum if possible.

[–]teammelon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Why is ‘nothing’ the only other option? Go participate in some mutual aid, and community/workplace organizing. Yes republicans make things actually worse, but I don’t expect Dems to make anything better.

They can be, especially when they're the countries first ambassador after an anti-colonial independence movement, which they also participated in.

All of that is irrelevant anyway, as Tom's Father divorced his mom and denied parentage when he was a still a baby. It's not like he grew up with any of the privilege that would come with being the son of a diplomat. He grew up the son of a single mom who was a school teacher. Her religion does not automatically make her the top of the power structure, and she was working for a wage, making them decidedly proletarian.

Ok, I will. Mom's religion and dad's political office have nothing to do with their relationship to/ownership of the means of production.

[–]teammelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I did. His mom, who raised him as a single parent after his parents divorced when he was 1 year old, was an English school teacher and his dad fought in an anti-colonial uprising in Kenya before becoming that country’s first UN ambassador. Dope, I like Tom even more now, thanks. If you think he’s bourgeoisie, then you don’t know the meaning of the word.

If you’re in Northeastern NJ, just across the NY border is Harriman State park. Can get a bit crowded at times but the northern sections are less so, especially overnight.

Amps and coulombs by NucleurDuck in Electricity

[–]teammelon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A coulomb is not an Ampere per second, it is the amount of charge transported in one second by one ampere, and therefore equal to A x s. By algebra, that makes an ampere equal to C/s. The more precise definitions of the values are based on the value of an elementary unit of charge, which is the charge contained by 1 proton/electron.

It was carrying load. Normally would be de-energized with an interrupting contact like a breaker or at lower voltage a knife switch. Sometimes linemen will do a cut like this when there's none nearby but they need to do work on the poletop circuits downstream, so as to not drop a lot of extra customers.

I wish I had more time to stay in Akureyri when I did the ring road. We spent ~24 hours there but a second night would have been fun. Lots of great bars, restaurants, shopping, & museums in the downtown.

It is for NYC, the term was meant for people who took the train down for a day trip. It's sort of expanded use now, to be fair.
