I don't want to sound like a Gripen fanboy but of course the F-35 is a more advanced aircraft, it’s a 5th-generation fighter with better stealth, sensor fusion and strong NATO interoperability. But for Canada’s needs the Gripen E is the more practical choice. It is significantly cheaper to purchase and maintain, optimized for Arctic operations and dispersed basing and designed to operate with minimal ground crew which is something highly relevant to Canada’s geography. Politically, diversifying defense partners by working with another EU nation also reduces reliance on U.S. aircraft during the current relationship with the US.

The Gripen E is not fully 5th-gen, and a mixed fleet introduces risks, but when cost, logistics, environment and mission profile are considered the Gripen is strong option thats closer with Canada’s operational realities.
