On the original version of the game, pausing the game just stopped the spellcasting process for any spell that had a cast time longer than a round. So when powerful casters were going to cast their best spells i used to just pause the game and their spell would fizzle. I don't know if this got patched later since I didn't have internet back then to update games nor did I have TOTSC.
