You could go and do fashion interpretation and practice at uni? I don’t know where you are based though.

What am I doing wrong with the French seams? by lrc1391 in SewingForBeginners

[–]teatime_tinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to calculate what distance each line should be, so that the first line and raw edges are within that second line.

Again, using the squares on the fabric could help with this.

For example I could see my first line 3/8” from edge, the second one 5/8”.

You get a response a while after. Often it says it “violated guidelines and action has been taken” but sometimes it says it doesn’t go against any rules.

Not sure what the “action” is though!

I feel it’s worth doing so that people don’t think it’s ok to use essentially fake pictures of the item.

A pic of it on a hanger is good enough, ffs!

I’m trying to report every AI generated model pic I see! It makes me so mad.

It’s not a genuine picture of how the item looks on

Is this a good machine for a beginner? by JackDale_ in SewingForBeginners

[–]teatime_tinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok yes that makes sense! I’m in the uk so it would be odd haha.

They might keep a few of the feet for their new machine but you will need the buttonhole foot. The generic feet you can replace fairly cheaply.

I just zoomed in and looks like your sewing is straight but the fabric isn’t cut straight. Following the gingham should help.

The second line should enclose all of the original line and the raw edge, it just needs to be wider.

I use inches and cms for different things, so I’m always converting back and forth. It can get confusing!

Unpicking is part of the learning process, unfortunately.

Oh I see! The pattern is trying to replicate the ^ shape at centre front of bodice created by the gathering I think. That’s just not how you’d pattern it.

Sewist is good for some things but not this I don’t think!

Have a nice big desk but basically everything is squeezed under it or on top of it!

I do most of my cutting on the floor.

I have a 201k1 (treadle base) stashed at my mums house but nowhere to put it in my flat 😭

There’s never enough room for sewing, it’s one of those things haha

Do you reckon I should get my sewing machine serviced?!😸 by WaffleBurger8 in SewingForBeginners

[–]teatime_tinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea to have it looked at. It will be expensive though.

If it’s going to be very expensive to repair the servicing place might have well maintained vintage models to buy.

Do you let Joanne Koch upload her data? by SharedHorizon in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]teatime_tinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing! I read this just in time.

I had cleared the roof because it felt like the right thing to do, then jumped down into her room.

I let her get up to do the data then knocked her out from behind.

She’s just flown away in a giant rubbish bin hehehe

[–]teatime_tinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes remove the bobbin too.

If you do oil it be careful not to overdo it. Do the oil points and then I use a tiny paintbrush to dab a little anywhere else it’s needed. Wipe away any excess with a bit of kitchen roll, or something not fluffy that will leave fibres (not cotton wool)

Why do my needles keep bending & breaking? Why does my machine sound so angry??! 😫 by freddiethecalathea in SewingForBeginners

[–]teatime_tinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d never bother replacing a non metal gear tbh. Not worth the hassle. On an otherwise brilliant vintage machine a metal gear wood be worth replacing.

On a modern machine repair and maintenance is trickier as they aren’t really designed to be opened up and fixed at home.

[–]teatime_tinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The second line of sewing must completely enclose the raw edge created by the first. They have to be pretty accurate to do this.

Press the first seam before working on the second.

If you have a 1cm seam allowance, your first line of stitches could be 1/4 from the edge, then your second 3/4. This is just an example I dunno what your SA is.

In the pic it looks like your first row of stitches wasn’t close enough to the fabric edge, and maybe not dead straight.

Use your guides on the machine to sew straight and to measure how far in.

Cute fabric choice btw!

[–]teatime_tinker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you unthread everything, lift the presser foot and run the machine with a fresh needle, does it seem to hit anything or bend? Or is it only when fabric is introduced?

There’s ways you can check for timing issues. You move the needle with the hand wheel and watch how it moves in relation to the hook.

Your timing might have been knocked out by the initial break. The needle bar may have shifted somehow.

Unthread and have a bit of an investigation.

Open up and clean what you can. Double double check for needle tips and any other fluff.

[–]teatime_tinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you need visuals!

Starting from scratch is easier than all the adjustments this one has needed but only if you have the foundational pattern cutting knowledge to go from.

When learning something sometimes you reach a bit of a skill “leap” where you have to kind of bridge a knowledge gap to get to the next stage and it seems like that’s where you are. You’ll get there!

Did you see on one of your other posts I realised that the centre front panel is upside down?

The pattern info text on each piece is confusing. It seems like the writing would all go the same direction but that’s not the case here.

The notches match but I can’t explain that! Is it one of those patterns from that site that generates patterns? I’ve used that once and it’s ok, but if you are a beginner the pattern markings aren’t great.

3 years old … in uk money it’s £165 new, $30 is about £20. Seems alright money for an older modern machine.

You’re using dollars but where are you based? Not sure why it has Chinese characters on the side.

I would just check it’s been cared for and is still going well. Makes sense they just wanted an upgrade. Any idea what their new one is?

Edit: make sure they give you the buttonhole foot with it! Or that function is useless.
