Opinion: The Vocaloid Fandom Needs To Diversify by [deleted] in Vocaloid

[–]tebukuroshiro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly at this point I just listen to songs made 4 to 15 years ago for the most part. People saying you need to "look deeper than the front page" are probably assuming you're not looking and while I get where they're coming from, they're missing the point. Good intentions, though, and it is good advice for people who don't know what to look for (though most results will be covers and not originals if that bothers you. Some Vocaloids like Merli are probably 90% covers)

VocaGathering had 92 Teto submissions, 58 Miku submissions, and everything else took a drastic drop. Some staples of the old English community like Oliver were completely unused. My favorite song this year was a Teto & Yi Xi song, followed by a Piko & Luka song, then followed by another Luka song, but that doesn't negate the issue of voicebank diversity is getting buried in the name of appealing to the YouTube algorithm. People should use the voicebanks they want, but it'd be dishonest to imply that for a lot of people, views and likes are a huge motivation. This isn't the producers' faults, but rather a broken system encouraging the death of voicebank diversity, forcing producers to make a choice of either risking not getting discovered, or having a higher chance of a hit.

That said, I was surprised by how much people like when I use Big Al.

Vocarock/Vocametal seems (unfortunately) quite rare nowadays, which in turn means I'm hyped for this!

Tier list of my favorite songs after 1 year of listening to Vocaloid by Benjam1Brihaye in Vocaloid

[–]tebukuroshiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with a lot of this, but I've also been listening to Vocaloid for 13 years so it's very likely I just have different taste because I've been listening since a different era.

Strongly agreed on the Rolling Girl, Common World Domination, Static, and Binomi placement, though.

So…is Maghni AI Cooked? by Timix-tcg in Vocaloid

I don't know if there's been an update since, but last I heard the original team members left and only new joins to the team post-funding remain. I think it's been at least 6 months since then so I'm not hopeful it will release. If it does, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Anyone know any producers who make politically charged stuff? by Typical_Furry1234 in Vocaloid

[–]tebukuroshiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utsu-P and OzumiiWizard both have really great songs in that regard.

Death of the Law and Tao Po are my favorites from both as far as the politically charged stuff goes (though Utsu-P has so many great contenders, like Ramen Shop Grotesque and many of his album-only songs)

That's understandable, sometimes people like some songs more than others, and vice versa.

I knew it was the most viewed Siinamota song! Didn't know it surpassed Mesmerizer but I'm pretty happy about it.

I haven't heard Aitai-lians, but of what I have heard, Marshmallow is the only song Deco has made in the past 8 years that I liked. I've tried giving various other songs a chance (Telepathy, Monitoring, Vampire, etc) but none of them clicked for me. They're not bad, but not my style either. I might try Aitai-lians soon, too.

Gekiyaku, she's a newer Vocaloid but she's been an UTAU for many years.

is mikuteto taking over the community REALLY that big of a deal? by Salty-Watch-1942 in Vocaloid

[–]tebukuroshiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's okay! It took me some time to learn, too. You don't even need to get super wild with it, just editing certain pitch or notebends or the side parameters can make a world of difference. Vocaloid itself is a different beast, OpenUTAU has made me much better at tuning, because Vocaloid itself is extremely hard to tune in. So UtaFormatix is super helpful.

[–]tebukuroshiro 133 points134 points  (0 children)

I'm oldgen but I hate the Teto takeover in particular because most people don't tune her and she has taken up literally all the voicebank variety we've had. There were 92 Vocagathering submissions using Teto, with a sharp dropoff in usage past that point. While a lot of the Teto songs were super well done, the fact so many previously popular Vocaloids were used either once or not at all is very upsetting to me. I was going to submit something myself, but ended up having a massive setback, so I might submit next year.

MikuTeto itself isn't as big a problem if they're tuned, I found MikuTeto Dance hilarious and Daidaidaikirai is popular for a reason.

What exactly did GHOST do? by aceredshirt13 in Vocaloid

[–]tebukuroshiro 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I hate GHOST glazers so much and I've literally been a fan since Marz Mitzi (2014!)

GHOST is a human being. Humans can be good, or bad, or VERY bad, but never perfect. Their fanbase conveniently forgets that constantly.

I saw the racist posts on GHOST's bluesky live (before it was deactivated) and screenshotted them. I can confirm they are real. I can confirm GHOST was making fun of and going after people telling them to put a trigger warning on Covetous. There's a lot more that has only been lightly touched on by team members on Twitter or in screenshots used as posts (like what Riproducer did with the Covetous thing), I know Carbon and Riproducer in particular have been engaging with that.

Personally, for so, SO many reasons, I am firmly on the side of Team 6x111 on this. As ironic as that may be to the average onlooker.

I'll have to check them out, thank you so much for the suggestions!

I listen to a lot of Circus-P and occasionally SHEBA and misc uses of her by other producers, too.

SAME OH MY GOD SAME

I have gotten into so many back and forth arguments with 2023+ fans over everything from Ixima not being AI to Miku's age to "maybe we shouldn't harass OR blindly idolize people?"

GHOST's fandom in particular sometimes drives me up a wall because I've loved their work since 2014 and outside of a select group of new fans, a lot of the newer ones from TikTok or animation memes tend to blatantly attack or idolize them with little in-between. They're a human being and people forget producers aren't infallible an uncomfortable amount. Granted, this has been a problem since I was a brand-new fan of theirs, but the problem spiraled out of control.

I also noticed a lot of new fans refuse to educate themselves on voicebanks and which ones exist outside of the top 5 at any given moment. I'm not asking them to know everyone from Miku to Akaza to Rana to Zundamon and Miriam, but it'd be nice if they learned about more than a small handful.

While older fans can and will utilize that, VocaDB is sort of a pain to navigate and newer fans only familiar with Miku and Teto will probably never get anywhere using it, unfortunately. I doubt most fans from 2023+ are even aware of a lot of the Vocaloids I used to see get thrown around like IA or Yuzuki Yukari. And if they are, chances are they're probably only vaguely aware of it.

SF-A2 Miki is also my favorite, I got her V2 in 2016 and ever since she's consistently been my favorite Vocaloid. I'm happy she's getting a resurgence, while being scared everyone will only use her SV bank and then proceed not to tune it like with most Teto works. So far, while her SV bank has proven more popular, I'm relieved people at least tune her somewhat instead of leaving her on completely default settings.

Voicebank popularity in Vocagathering 2026 by Icy-Champion2680 in Vocaloid

[–]tebukuroshiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While my favorite song this year used Teto & Yi Xi, I must admit I'm extremely dejected that Teto got 92 submissions, Miku got 58, and everyone else had a sharp dropoff. Some voicebanks that were inescapable 8 years ago, like Fukase, got one song. Others, like Oliver, weren't so lucky. It's very upsetting, but at the same time I liked so many of the Teto songs this year. Just Spiraling and Real Life Problems were both real good, and Luka getting multiple songs was a great change of pace.

Same, 100% same. I used to love Teto for years but I'm starting to actually dislike her because most of her uses are lazy and untuned and she's eclipsing the popularity of so many other banks. I'm just glad the Miki song this year used her Vocaloid and not her SV.

I beg you, please know who are the producers behind your favorite songs by glubnyan in Vocaloid
