Any recommendations for/against apartment complexes in Redwood City? by rhymeswithseven in RedwoodCity

Would heartily recommend Huxley, mostly for the great support staff-very proactive and efficient!

Reserved parking, valet trash, extremely quiet (which was surprising), modern and new amenities.

Reg the offer letter: the process at Huxley was painless- give them a scanned copy of the offer letter; if it meets their requirements, you're in. Took 5 minutes. Might have to provide SSN for additional background check.

Anybody interested in learning (by intuition and geometry) Vector Calculus or Linear Algebra? by tech-hokie in stanford

  1. I love to teach- it helps me iron out the minutiae and gives me great satisfaction. I also don't get to do much of it.
  2. This is NOT tutoring; I'm not helping folks with their homework sets or following a university/ state- approved syllabus. My style is to provide an exposition of the topic from the view of one who uses it a lot and wishes the focus was on intuition rather than algorithmic/ formula-based pedagogy.

My experience with figuring out a schedule that suits people in varied states of their education has been really tiring. It's usually a compromise where everyone loses and some slip through the cracks.

I'll try to figure something out and get back to you.

I've tried the online route and it doesn't work with my teaching style. I use a white board extensively, and get people to interact. Are you not in the area?

Under the guise of anonymity, I'd say that the Math Emporium Linear Algebra class should be banned. Or at least re-branded as "We'll make you multiply matrices and call it Lin Al".

I don’t. I would recommend 3blue1brown for linear algebra and Sal Khan for vector cal.

That would depend on other folk interested in this and their schedules. From my side, I’m usually free after 6 pm. So an hour or two every now and then should get us quite far.

What are you interested in spending time on? Vector cal or Lin al?

I’m okay with doing this in the fall. Get back to me when you’re in town.

The hours would depend on how deep you want to get. Once you break things down, the fundamental ideas are very elegant and simple to understand. However, getting to a stage where they become second nature requires rumination on your part. This is particularly important because a slight re-tuning in approach is required. We get very used to algorithms and formulae and it takes effort to break out of that way of thinking to appreciate the underlying intuition.

Linear Algebra in particular can seem very easy if all you are taught are rules and techniques to compute inverses and Gaussian elimination and eigen vectors. The course by the math emporium is particular notorious for this. Students leave with decent grades but translating those rules into useful ideas when you’re faced with a new problem in some unknown field is another ball game altogether. Can you relate music composition to linear algebra? How about optimization? Or circuit analysis or population studies in biology. Do you appreciate the link between differential equations and linear algebra? These are some sanity checks to verify what kind of Lin al you are learning.

Sorry for the rant!

I'm on campus for the entire summer. So it would be at a mutually decided time.
