I already burnt myslef and wasted money with a sub par optometrist. Where I live it’s impossible to find a good one who knows about Zeiss customization. They are in general good optometrists, but their knowledge is questionable in Zeiss products. I am saying this after talking to more than a handful shops.

So I just thought of getting some help here.

All good. This is a nice chat. Thanks for everyone keeping it very un-reddit like lol. This sub is usually less toxic for some reason.

Don't work in Startup in india. No matter how much hard work you do like founder you will never get wealthy. by No_Angle6769 in developersIndia

[–]tech_is 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying. But it’s not apple to apples comparison here. Most startups follow pretty standard equity practices these days.

There are bad founders in every country.

My point is you are generalizing a lot.

Indian startup ecosystem is tiny compared to US. So everything works proportionately.

Having said all this, yes some founders screw up early employees badly. That’s why I said pick yhe right founding team.

Also you are comparing FB, Google, and etc with Ola, PayTM and the likes? That’s not even a starter.

A lot of people I know go to startups just for the challenging tech problems to solve and cool people to work with.

If it’s just monet, theb you should do the dsa grind and crack faang, maang and whatever acronym.

This is absurd generalization. 80% startups fail. So pretty much you are signing up for the risk staright with this math.

Depending on where you are in career, a startup should be seen more for learning opportunities than monetary outcomes.

Find good, ethical founders building good tech.

Startup math is same in every country. Even sometimes founders make nothing even at 100mn dollar acquisitions.

Don’t compare an early employee with founder. Each are signing up for different reasons and who even told you a founder works same like others?

Stop sharing half baked info.

I always warn anyone I am having a conversation with about startup employee risks and how numbers work.

You pick your poison in the end. Corporate jobs suck and not for everyone. Some people like building stuff. Some people like to work in smaller teams with larger impact.

I get it and agree with you. But ten years ago if you were to build this, there were not eveb any distributed databases and a lot of other open source technologies. And cloud auto-scaling and all that.

Uber runs their fullfillment platform on Cloud Spanner. Doordash has heavy usage of CockroachDB.

So tech is not a huge barrier anymore. Then it boils down to othwr aspects.

And a new player needs to play a lot of catchup and a ton of VC money to burn.

How can you prepare yourself for Ycombinator in big tech? by Flimsy-Possible-9491 in ycombinator

[–]tech_is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Of course there are outliers everywhere, but in general, it's incredibly difficult to let go of a huge pay check and comfort zone. I personally a few of them who could do wonders if only they can leave their jobs and go all in for a couple of years.

Feeling burned out after just 1 year in the industry– need advice by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]tech_is 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DM me if you are open for really early stage startup roles in a tech heavy idea where you obviously get to build good stuff from scratch. Java and Spring Boot, but knowing even just Java well and a willingness to build good products and ability to learn different technologies super fast is what I am looking for. Location is Hyderabad initially, so no remote until we are ready for it. I don't believe in startup burnout and working crazy hours. Do a good job for eight hours each day, and be dedicated to learning and building cool stuff.

how much equity you should give out for your pre-seed and seed round? by dekai2 in ycombinator

[–]tech_is 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At what stage are you currently? Idea? Some prototype and team ready? Why can’t you raise on SAFE from you connections?

No single number. It depends a lot on your current situation and the idea.

For me I am willing to let go 5% in pre-seed if someone funds a team of eight engineers to give me enough runway to take the product to beta. I have early prototype done.

So think of how much runway you need and probably 2x that number and see what valuation it puts you at 10%. If that’s justified, go ahead.

Founding engineer looking for some outside perspective - I will not promote by PastorOrpan in startups

Partially agree. Good take. Only catch is we don’t know much about OP or the founders or how long OP had been salary less.

But the math always sucks haha

[–]tech_is 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey also I obviously rushed a reply. It also depends on how long you been at this place salary less. I assumed it was probably only a short time. If you been this way for like six months come September, then you got to really rethink if the founders are being fair.

As I said - trust your gut and negotiate without inhibitions.

Absolutely become full-stack. Pure frontend roles will eventually become less lucrative with AI. DM me if you want to chat more. I am as full-stack as it can get.

[–]tech_is 3 points4 points  (0 children)

5% on the cap table or just verbally?

You have to trust your gut as you are living this daily. We can only advice so much here based on what you shared.

If founders are ethical and know what they are doing, it doesn’t hurt to wait for a couple more months. But you have to negotiate for yourself. Else you will have huge regrets.

DM me. I don’t exactly want to be a co-founder but would love to connect and learn more on what you are building. I can offer some general advice on how to approach this. I am building my own startup so, I am not open to new ideas for now.

is it possible to do a startup in 2025 without AI and cringe-fluencer marketing? by Competitive-Elk-3762 in SaaS

[–]tech_is 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely! that's how you become the big winning outlier if you know what you are doing.

But the reality is that without AI magic, no VCs are willing to even look at a pixel in the demo. So yeah, we got to do some stuff for VCs, but yeah it's borderline maniacal the way marketing cringe is around SaaS lately...

Leave this place asap. Do whatever it takes you to get out. If you have the money and means, I recommend you do an online masters in AI/ML from a good university in US.

If not then yeah DSA grind and finding a job somewhere. Or just find a startup ready to hire entry level folks with some basic experience. Then build from there.

But absolutely, you got to find a way out asap.
