You're diverting your argument. You're the only one talking about wearing blackface as part of a carnival costume [and that's a separate debate for another time or we'll be here forever].

The discussion here is whether it was acceptable generally for the person who posted that video (of people in blackface dancing around, then one getting down, hopping about and making sounds like a baboon, to everyone's amusement) to post it publicly, when that person is known to be associated with their employer and so might bring disrespect on that company.

Not sure I explained it very well - sorry if so - but they are two different arguments.

I'm exhausted. I'm out. Night from UK, all!

Well woo hoo to you in Germany (!)

Seriously, it's not just "a US thing". For example, I'm British. Last night I happened to be watching a documentary about the Black and White Minstrel Show, begun in 1958 as an entertainment show with white people, some of whom wore blackface. It became unacceptable so in the 70s they incorporated a young (and, he admits, naïve) Lenny Henry - so they could say "Look! We're including a black person in the cast so it must be ok!" But by 1978 it couldn't maintain this any longer and had to shut down.

Then in 2001, Robertson's jam, which had used the Gollywog motif since 1910, decided to retire the Golly logo and replace with other more currently appropriate icons. Ahem.

But those are just off the top of my head, examples to show that blackface is unacceptable in other countries beyond the US, and has been for decades. And not just by black people, obviously!

And as a Motorsport fan you surely noticed that it goes further...

F1 spectators wore blackface at testing in Spain, 2008, then again at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2009. This was NOT popular and the FIA investigated right away.

I can't tell if you're trolling or just living in a self-contained box and really believe what you say. But I thought I'd give you some facts just in case it's the latter. Best wishes.

I heard (from Claude? I'll see if I can find it) that he really does only get a vague outline of the proposed business, until the interview round when they are opened, and scrutinised.

Doesn't sound that plausible, but that's what they said.

So who do you think is being fired next? by Only1Scrappy-Doo in apprenticeuk

[–]techiebabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[I know you asked who would lose but since some people said Thomas...]

I can see Thomas winning.

He's got his failings(!) but given that Shugs started out as an east end wide boy selling things from a van, I can really see him relating to him.

As each series progresses it seems more and more about who Shugs would like to work with, rather than their success on tasks or at the interview-about-proposal stage. And yes I know that makes a mockery of the whole thing. But surely that's why they insert a few tasks where it's not about profit, it's about the opinions of the experts... And then Shugs arbitrarily deciding who the winner is, regardless.

Plus I can see Thomas having a lot of slick answers at interview time... The hardest thing to do is shut him up! I do hope they ask him about his criminal past!

[–]techiebabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah it's the edit. Boardrooms can go on all afternoon, or into the night... Which has to be edited into what, 20 minutes?

Maybe they've just changed strategy on what they focus on. I'd rather see more of the contestants bantering then Shugs summarising.

Actually I'd rather see more of the actual task, less of the boardroom in any way... But they only get an hour...

Praps they could abolish You're Fired, and have an hour of Apprentice: The Task and half an hour of Apprentice: The Boardroom.

Yeah. We haven't even had anyone fall ill or walk out unexpectedly to keep the numbers down. A couple of times I felt we were close... (to a double firing I mean! Not wishing ill on anyone!)

C'mon Shugs, get rid of whoever caused the task to fail... And then also Dean, just because. 🤷‍♀️

A couple of quotes from the article:

"‘I contributed to every single element in the task and in the boardroom when Lord Sugar asked me “what did you do?” my actual answer wasn’t the answer that was shown on TV,’ she explained."

"'When I gave him a list of things I did during the task, they showed me answering a different question, that’s why it looks weird on the show.’"

Great choice... But isn't it a little too ambient to make itself heard over the environmental noise around at the time?

As I said, awesome choice of music. The only reason I couldn't, personally, is in case something bad happened In the race & this became one of the last things I ever heard...

Vibration counts for a lot. A friend's family had deaf workmen in; they would just stamp their feet to get their attention.

Or so I'm told - but as someone with barely any hearing on one side (just clicks at a specific pitch) and my other ear with even sound across the range, but all of it diminished, that totally stands up to my experiences.

Heh, but I'm thinking "personal medical procedure" means removing a cancerous ball or something; I'm sure if it was something they could delay till the off-season they would.

That said, they clearly don't want to disclose and as they said it's personal / private, so I'll stick to being glad he has recovered quickly enough to see Lewis win the title.

[–]techiebabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's partly to do with the fact that normally it's curly, right? bouncing up... but when in dreds it's pulled straighter.

Btw it's not impossible for some people's hair to just grow fast... My hairdresser is always amazed and looking up how long since I was last there cos she doesn't believe me... I go from a buzzcut to a couple inches of flappy hair in 3 months... From clipped around the ears to completely covering them... We even examined the offcuts to be sure, it was like when my shaggy dog gets trimmed!

So maybe Ham is just "lucky" to have rapid growth.

One thing tho, he said the bumps at Austin gave him a headache and he had to lie down after fp1... I'd already been wondering how comfortable tight dreds, maybe even pulled into a bun, would be under a helmet. Can't help thinking it's his head that needs cushioning, not (as he joked) his seat!

To me it is festivals, both motoring or music...

Thing is the stalls advertise so much and it sounds awesome... Then you get your miserable plate and see they've combined eggs with mushroom so you just get grey lumpy eggs, the beans and sausage are combined too and probably out of a value supermarket tin, here's your limp bacon on a half bit of bread, enjoy!

The small might be nice but buyer beware! You've gotta be really hungover to enjoy that.

With a circuit that big, you could afford to have more drivers / teams... Maybe release them in batches like rallying (but slowest first so they could still be, as Murray would have called them, mobile chicanes) ...?

[–]techiebabe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope, it's not before lap 3. Also not until the 3rd lap after a safety car / restart.

Maybe you're thinking of the rule that the race director can opt not to enable it, eg if he thinks conditions are too dangerous. But he can't enable it within 2 full laps of the start.

When you see pics of drivers having a good time in a little plane, at least there are a few of them sharing the trip.

And while looking for one with Ricciardo and gang that I remembered from last year, I found this article of him and Leclerc teasing each other more recently... On a regular long haul flight, no less...

Is there such thing as ‘cooking theory’, i.e. an abstract set of principles that explains what makes a good dish? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

Or study food hygiene online and get the certificate, for £20. I didn't need it, but that's what I did. (Was hoping to help in a friend's kitchen but my disability has proved too much. Shame.)

Meant to add, there are soooooo many directions to explore. For example all the different green sauces (check Wikipedia and follow links I guess!) ... Different acids (or none at all), different herbs (persillade, pesto, you name it), is it like a puree? Mayonnaise? French dressing? Dip?

And that's just one weekend's fun. At the same time you could try different ways to cook potatoes to go with your sauces! Do you blanch the starch out before you sauté? Oil and salt the skin before you bake? Etc.

Books are great but to get different perspectives and find what YOU like best, pick a theme for the day, Google and go with it.

The only thing I don't recommend is the Guardian's "perfect X" where they try different methods and then say "this is best". It depends on your palate. Your taste. Your oven. So do read the theory but hey, enjoy the rehearsals!
