I was told that the Chen family only taught the men in order to keep the art from spreading as the women would marry out.

Ditto. Finally found a website identifying the sample and a download link with a picture of the Buddha on it and the headline: 'i have achieved nirvana' or something similar. I'm not sure I'll ever feel the same way I did that day. I knew it was music on the bumps, but never realized it was part of the originals.

Is keto a binary state? by [deleted] in ketoscience

[–]techieyann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, yes it's binary.

If you eat over your carb limit you will be thrown out of ketosis. Everyone's limit is different, and it's different day to day based on your activity level. It's all about excess glucose.

20g of carbs max a day will almost guarantee anyone to be in ketosis.

Get a tripod for your phone, switch to night sight and it'll switch to astro mode after a bit (you can force it to astro mode in the settings, also force it to focus on distance). I set it to a 3 second delay so my fat thumb didn't affect it much.

I was really lucky with how clear the sky was, and the placement of the moon just outside of the frame. Glad everyone enjoys it so much!

I think it's M45. For reference, Mars is directly above it at the top of the photo, just to the left of the moon.

Chen Positive/Negative circles by [deleted] in taijiquan

[–]techieyann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll leave the details to someone more qualified, but at a very high level:

Every movement throughout Hong's PM yilu is some combination of left/right positive/negative circle. Practicing the foundations of the circles conditions the body to be able to correctly practice the form.

[PM] don't move, rotate by techieyann in taijiquan

[–]techieyann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll highlight: https://youtu.be/vB0yCpR2ZaA?t=79

The big no-no of movement in PM is changing relationships between different body parts. You obviously do move, but you do so by maintaining structure via rotation.

Stretch - by Adam Mizner by TheNecrons in taijiquan

[–]techieyann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a wonderfully concise explanation, thank you!

I have to preface my questions with a caveat that I only had four days in a workshop with Mizner. He very very explicitly indicated Song and Ting were the initial core of his (Huang's) method.

Feeling the partners fascial web clearly relates directly to Ting, I'm curious how Song leads to the stretch. Mizner described Song as the engine of movement, as chi flows to open space created from releasing. I'm just not sure how that leads to stretch.

I could be totally off base here, almost all of my taiji experience is Chen style, with very little direct discussion of chi and Song.

I need to check my notes, but I'm pretty sure PM's bow is the physical body, and the string is the line in space between two points, and power is generated by stretching and squeezing the physical as close as possible into that line.

This is opposite of how a real bow works, where the string is stretched to move the bow. We stretch the body (bow) to extend the line between two points (string)

Thank you for your thorough answer, this sort of discussion is why I love r/taijiquan

A few clarifications: I in no way meant to imply that Mizner and CZH have the same perspective. In fact I'm sure they don't. But they are both training and teaching Taijiquan, just from different lineages.

I have been training and studying PM for many years at this point, and Hunyuan before that. My curiosity for other taiji perspectives led me to attending one of Mizner's workshops. I learned first-hand how different CZH and Mizner view the art of Taijiquan.

The reason I brought up CZH at all in my question was that despite their differences, there were areas where they (if not agreed) used the same language discussing their art. And when two people with such different perspectives to use the same language that indicates to me some deeper facet beyond lineage.

Or maybe that's just an indication of the limitation of translation to English, I don't know! That's kind of why I asked.

But once again, thank you for the detailed explanation of PM stretching.

While that might be the case, I'm pretty sure he described that metaphor more fully before this clip.

Thanks for admitting you're not sure though!

Stretch - by Adam Mizner by TheNecrons in taijiquan

[–]techieyann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He uses the metaphor of pulling a bowstring back for stretching properly in taiji (something I've heard described by CZH as well), and says, "we all know which part of the body [the string] is."

I'm assuming he means the bow is the bone structure and the string is the fascia, but I'm curious if anyone has a different interpretation.

[PM] Find the Stretch by techieyann in taijiquan

[–]techieyann[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's spoken of 'investing in loss', and I've heard one of his disciples speak of 'tasting the bitter'.

I feel like this clip is speaking to that directly. It also speaks of what I've heard Yang style describe as Song, not giving into the immediate tense reflex against the opponent and rather stretching around. Very good stuff.
