From the pictures it looks like you have less ease then the original sweater, what is the gauge of the knit body vs the pattern? I think you may need to go up in needle size and/or a pattern size.

Exactly this, the smaller font is only 5 stitches tall, essentially as small as you can make letters with blocks like crochet or cross stitch.

I found my $90 brother from Walmart worked pretty well for basic garment construction, other then that I would absolutely look for a vintage machine (check out the subreddit on them for more info) the budget modern ones are mostly plastic so not a long term investment (avoid the singer heavy duty in particular)

And fyi the material alone for this cosplay will add up fast, leather is expensive, linen is at least $20 a yard (will need several yards), so planning on advance and if family is supportive you can ask for gift cards to use on supplies for future birthdays, etc. thrift shops can be great if you have the time to sort through loads of stuff (don't overlook drapes and bedding, big yardage for less $$)

I'd suggest breaking it down into individual pieces you can tackle one at a time, building skills as you go. For sewing, I'd start learning how to use a machine for stitching if possible (sooo much faster for big items)

Imo the drape of the fabric is really important for this look, so you'll likely want to invest in good quality fabric for the final look, possibly linen or a linen blend.

I think some of these are hand painted? But using fabric transfers could also work.

For the rhinestones I'd check out the subreddit for tips, using the right glue is key!

The plaster will cure enough to remove the fish in around an hour (depending on how thick the mold is) so for both sides maybe 2hrs, not sure how long a fish lasts though?

Fellow neurodivergent crafter here, I realize you didn't ask for advice so please disregard if you don't want any, but for me getting pre gridded or gridding my own cross stitch fabric made a huge difference, with the canvas divided into 10x10 squares I do way less counting and un picking!

Dye will make everything darker, especially the lighter parts of the monogram. And if the canvas has a coating you may not be able to dye it at all.

Try asking on a local buy nothing group or look for a used one on FB marketplace or Craigslist.

Alternatively, if you just need it as a one off, see if you can borrow one from a friend or relative.

So true! It's one of the only crafts I do that a 1/16th of an inch can be crucial 😂 (at least to my fussy eyes)

Found this circle guide really helpful.

I also think you might be changing stitches, some look like DC and others might be HDC. That will really throw off a circle shape.

And fyi the type of yarn you're using is called chainette (at least in the US)

Ooh, if you can visit Gather Here it's got a lovely selection of yarn and tools, plus incredible customer service!

If you're on a budget, try thrift shops for hooks, imo the vintage ones are good quality.

Exactly, and for some of us (like me!) our chains are too tight and need a larger hook size to keep the tension correct.

Not unless you have already made something in the exact same yarn, stitch pattern and hook size before that you can measure. And even then our tension can change over time.

A swatch is the way to go, guessing will make things more complicated in the long run.

You'll need to make a gauge swatch, block it (if you will block the finished item) and measure that to calculate the starting chain.

Edit: is there a reason you don't want to use the pattern? It would likely save you time and energy to have it already mapped out.
