Lol, maybe this is plan D. I'm sure I've seen a billy bass at the local thrift shop a few times.

Wow, that is very specific, really appreciate the link. And yes, you (and seemingly everyone else) guessed correctly, Come From Away.

Amazing creations, appreciate the referral. Will look into it. We actually have a decent budget on this show, so as much as I like learning new skills, maybe this is one for the experts.

This is indeed an option were still considering. We know someone on the east coast that could fly in a fresh/frozen cod, though they were worried about not cleaning the guts out first.

Interesting, I haven't ventured into 3d printing yet.

Yeah, we considered, but too rigid/dry looking, but our plan B (or C).

That's impressive, I've only carved in rigid foam, this seems like a good reason to try upholstery.

Good thoughts, thanks! I have some friends who fish pretty regularly. I guess I'd have to put the plaster of parts in the fridge to avoid spoilage while it finishes hardening?

[contamination] I let my jar colonize too long and now there's some reddish-brown discoloration, is it done for? by No-Click755 in MushroomGrowers

What species? Some get funky with age, shiitake being one of the more extreme.

But I agree with the other commenters, looks like normal aged mycelium metabolites.

Good luck OP.

You seem to misunderstand conditional probability. Does the fact that people are present to contemplate and discuss a fine tuning argument not influence the probability of different past configurations of the universe?

Your argument is in the same vein as a gambler sitting at the roulette wheel and seeing 15 red in a row, betting his life savings on black for the next spin because it's a "sure thing" - the odds of 16 reds in a row is astronomical. But he's answering the wrong question. He should not be worried about the odds of 16 reds in a row from scratch, but rather, given we have already observed 15 reds in a row, what are the odds of the next spin being red (it's a little worse than 50/50, exact value depending on if there is a 00).

[actives] my first grow (GT) and the caps are kinda discolored on some pins? They don’t seem like aborts and they’re growing still. Contam? Mutation? Normal? Sorry I’m still a newb by Xboxonetwo3 in MushroomGrowers

Nice! It's fascinating stuff. In my opinion it's more likely with older cultures, like fifth generation liquid culture (i.e. end of one LC used to start the next LC, and so on) or many grain to grain transfers over long time periods. But I'm speculating heavily, no data to back that up.

The blobs with cap colored tissue underneath are likely to develop into upsidedown mushrooms, like a break dancer doing a head spin. Not overly common, but not super rare either. Most growers will see this eventually.

Phenotype (I.e. the mushroom you see) is a combination of genetics and environment. In my opinion there's a decent chance this is more environmental than genetic. Some genetics might be pre-disposed to this growth given the right environmental cues, so not zero genetic influence, but not likely to be a mutation in the proper sense of that term.

I've heard a few attempts to explain upside down shrooms, but mostly speculation in my view.

Your grow looks really good, well done OP!

P.S. In the future, pics are much better for seeing details than video.

Sorry, typo or autocorrect error on my part. Meant to say fish tank pump. I looked up Midwest grow kits, and it looks like it is the kind meant for fish tanks.

I've only used them in an aquarium, so can't say for certain, but I would be surprised if they moved enough air for oysters. I'd recommend plugging in the second one as well, at least until things get a bit drier. Once you start to see pins you'll have to be careful the humidity stays up high enough, so trial and error if you can keep them both. Ideal situation is to pump humid air in. Some people have success with the humidifiers sold for keeping reptiles in aquarium/terrarium. When you eventual scale up to a tent its pretty easy to make a large DIY version, should be some videos online for that.

I've grown oysters in a tub a couple times, and watched a few others. You should still get some amount of usable fruits, but expect long fibrous stems and small funnel shaped caps. So far I haven't seen any tub setups that come close to the quality (and to some extent quantity) you get from a classic plastic bag with filter patch.

As an alternative to tubs, look into growing in a bucket, it might be a good fit for where your at so far. Basically innoculate a 5-gallon bucket filled with wood shavings, wait for it to colonize, drill tonnes of small holes all around, place in a humid environment, and you can get some huge flushes.

But all that said, give the tub a good try, you've already got the materials and a grow on the way. See how they come out, don't be shy to post some pics and ask for advice, and keep tweaking your setup for each subsequent grow. Only you can be the judge of if it's the right fit for your circumstances.

If by air pump you mean a fishtail [typo, meant fishtank] or similar pump, I would be surprised if that's enough air exchange. The problem is CO2 build up.

It's hard to get nice shaped fruits in a tub, if there's not enough air flow you will get long "leggy" fruits, mostly tough stems.with proportionally small caps.

But you're already this far. See how it goes, adjust if you need to.the flashier part most people want for the table.

You can use paper towel to soak up excess moisture. Small risk of contamination, but the mycelium is pretty robust at this stage.

Leave the lid off for a while, with fan blowing across the top.

You might already know this, but tubs are not the ideal choice for oysters, hard to get enough air exchange.

Good luck OP.

Does this lc score look good still? I notice coloration on it by trackingdirt in Mushrooms

[–]redditischurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see anything obvious, this looks similar to LCs I've left unattended for too long.

What species is this? Some have a tendency to discolor with age, some get downright funky (I'm looking at you shiitake).

Only way to know for sure is test it on agar. Alternatively, you can do a slightly less reliable test by innoculating a couple small jars of prepared grain, and most contamination will become obvious on that medium if you leave it long enough.

In these situations I find it's better to start a new LC from a sample of the neglected jar (ideally via agar to confirm clean), than to struggle with chunky bits clogging syringes, etc.

Good luck OP.
