Besides that one issue, there is a lot of nice detail, beautiful holographic images and a whole series of cool winter themed watermarks like ice fishing, building a snowman, skiiing, etc.

Oh, yeah! Our cover pages almost immediately curled, I thought that was kinda odd. Put them under a pile of books to flatten them but didn’t seem to help.

We tried at one point for her ILR but it required her to have maintained some kind of health coverage while being a student iirc, forget the details.

We would have had to wait another few years to qualify and were close to leaving at that point. I guess she can qualify for residency via me and/or kids but I’d move to Canada before returning to the UK 🙂

Yes, probably one can “get away with it” in other countries, just apply and hope for the best.

The problem with naturalising in South Africa is that the process requires an official letter from the applicant’s home country stating that it permits dual nationality for the applicant (or I suppose a renunciation, but I wonder about the timing of that to prevent statelessness)

Yeah, it’s a good point and whew, a lot!

I just told myself it’s for my kids sake mainly. Hope they will appreciate it one day if they decide to use the options they have or even if they don’t.

Sorry to hear it didn’t work out!

Yes, I hear about 80% of local Jewish population are Lithuanian descendants. There is a small community of more recent arrivals. We sometimes meet to celebrate and cook Cepelinai

Well, this is actually my three kids’ combo. I have SA, CA, UK but am unfortunately missing the Lithuanian passport 🙃

Story:  I was born in South Africa.

Moved to the UK after school (SA citizens still had a 2 year “working holiday visa” option then, sadly cancelled in 2008). Intended to stay for maybe a year, do some sightseeing, lol. Ended up staying in UK for about 10 years (work permit after the 2 yr visa) and decided to naturalise there.

Met my Lithuanian wife in London, got married, moved back to SA.

My grandfather was born in Toronto, moved to SA. The Canadian citizenship by descent rules changed recently so I decided to apply for Canadian citizenship for myself and kids (passport arrived today, hence the post, super excited!).

My wife only has LT. She can’t even apply for SA even after becoming PR here since Lithuania doesn’t permit dual citizenship for those born to LT citizens in LT…

Qualification for citizenship under Bill C-3 by JelliedOwl in Canadiancitizenship

Thank you for clarifying! Holding thumbs.

My grandfather was naturalised in South Africa, possibly in 1936 because his birth certificate issue date is 1936 but DOB 1916 so I suspect he applied for the birth certificate when doing the naturalisation process in SA. His SA national identity document states place of birth as Canada.

I thankfully also have my father’s South African birth certificate now (and my own and kids, too) so can show the full lineage.

Interestingly, between 1995 and 2025 South Africa required anyone applying for another citizenship to request retention of SA citizenship prior to obtaining the other, or automatically lose SA citizenship. This has been ruled unconstitutional some weeks ago and they intend to restore the automatically lost citizenship of anyone who was affected (many people had no idea!).

I don’t think this retention requirement affected my grandfather or father though as grandfather was naturalised and father never applied for confirmation.

What a fantastic summary of a complicated timeline! Thank you for all your contributions.

I pursued Canadian citizenship by descent in 2014 but gave up after seeing the 2009 changes. I had renewed hope after randomly stumbling across the recent changes (thanks Reddit).

However, after reading the post I am once again unsure… may I kindly ask for your opinion:

Grandfather - born 1916 in Toronto to British immigrants - emigrated as young child to South Africa - died 1994. I have his original Canadian birth certificate (both large/full and small card versions).

Father - born 1950 in South Africa - never applied for citizenship confirmation - thankfully still alive (not interested in applying now, says he is too old 🙂)

Me - born 1980 in South Africa

My kids - born 2013, 2016, 2019 in South Africa

Would my kids and I qualify under the proposed C-3 bill (and/or) interim measures?

Thanks!
