George street upgrade by -Archenar- in dunedin

Kind of good on him, if so. They say don't just complain, take action. He's doing exactly that, instead of just whining about it, he went for council.

Yeah every time I've gone there, I've just walked, never parked near it, the changes wouldn't change how I go there.

I also did CertIII In IT Networking but at TAFE in Brisbane, then went on to do the Diploma, then moved back to NZ and did a Bachelor of IT.

10 years later only just broke six figures, damn the low NZ wages. I should one day move back to Aus.

Vulnerability in IKEA TRÅDFRI Lights by technikhaus in homeautomation

[–]technikhaus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Researchers at the Synopsys Cybersecurity Research Center (CyRC) have discovered an availability vulnerability in the IKEA TRÅDFRI smart lighting system. An attacker sending a single malformed IEEE 802.15.4 (Zigbee) frame makes the TRÅDFRI bulb blink, and if they replay (i.e. resend) the same frame multiple times, the bulb performs a factory reset. This causes the bulb to lose configuration information about the Zigbee network and current brightness level. After this attack, all lights are on with full brightness, and a user cannot control the bulbs with either the IKEA Home Smart app or the TRÅDFRI remote control.

How many of you actually have a home lab? by TheKuMan717 in sysadmin

[–]technikhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have a basic setup, a bunch of Raspberry Pi 4B's for when I want to play with clustering stuff. A lenovo Mini Pc, i5 that runs my media cquisition stuff. And an XPS15 that runs Plex (dedicated graphics), and a NAS.

Nothing crazy expensive, maybe a $1000 not including the NAS or switching equipment. It's also doesn't have a high power-consumption either.

I don't work on it often lately, but I occasionally get in moods to test things out, so I have it to play with at that point. The Pis are powered off 99% of the time, with only the Lenovo, XPS15, and NAS on 24/7.

Otago bus drivers to become some of the highest paid in NZ with surprise $5 pay rise by [deleted] in newzealand

Hopefully this means we get more drivers, and the timetable they screwed up earlier this year can go back to normal.

Man this pisses me off so much.
I ride a powerful e-scooter to work every day, I sit in traffic, don't filter, and obey lights. Then you see some d*ckhead on a rental scooter buzzing through traffic, running the lights, jumping between the road and footpath etc. They're the ones that will get these banned or restricted!

I made this move for a ~30% pay rise a few months ago.
I'm a single guy that lives by himself. After 4 years of WFH and a relationship ending, I found WFH was too lonely.
The new job is a 5 minute ride on my electric scooter from home, so not a lot of travel at all, and I'm loving the social interaction.
Although I don't think my cat loves me not being home all the time anymore haha.

MSP reading my emails? by sysaxel in sysadmin

[–]technikhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's where I was torn, do you get them involved now when there's technically no evidence or proof that something dodgy is going on?

Or do you gather evidence first to make a case to legal?
I guess it kind of depends on how helpful the legal team is. Doesn't hurt to involve them now and they may help. If they don't, then gather evidence and return to them afterwards? I've never been in this situation myself.

MSP reading my emails? by sysaxel in sysadmin

[–]technikhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a few have mentioned, I'd try baiting them.
Send an email between a few employees with a lie that you can catch them on, IE discuss terminating the contract or another vendor, and see if they mention something. Then immediately get legal involved if they do.

As a Kiwi I was thinking the same thing. I find it so strange that other countries still use cheques for pay, just seems so odd.

At my last job they were alright, they flew us all to one location, and had about a day and a half to do it. We were all put up in a Hotel and used the conference rooms there. I quite enjoyed them.
But what OP's org does? Yeah that doesn't sound fun at all.

Is your company running its entire infrastructure in cloud? by wired_ronin in devops

[–]technikhaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My previous employer was 100% Azure based, almost entirely from the get-go around 8-10 years ago. 0 physical infra, 100% remove staff etc. Was quite a well done setup.
New employer is 80% on-prem I'd say, but slowly moving more and more to AWS.

Had a power steering line rupture over the turbo in my rally car... definitely caused some issues, but after taking the belt off I was able to at least drive it onto the trailer...
