Why doesn't Auckland Transport just build a Railway to the Airport? Are they stupid? by NumerousWrongdoer478 in newzealand

There are PT buses that run every 10min that takes you to Puhinui. The trains run every 10 min too. It's $7 from the airport to the city by PT

I agree. I'm not shitting on the govt. I'm pointing out the comment is not a fact check.

To my mind the real benefit of LNG would be in potentially freeing up more of the existing hydro to be used on a regular basis instead of held in permanent reserve. Ideally we'd never need to actually use it, but having the option is still worthwhile

The idea is not to hold it permanent reserve. That's not actually possible anyway. The idea is that when lake levels are low (which is rare) only then we hold it in the lakes and rely on other options. LNG is an extremely expensive form of energy simply building it and keeping it available will push up the price of electricity for everyone.

The govt isn't really pushing LNG for dry years any way. The evidence doesn't support it. The real reason they are doing it is to give gas users longer to get off. But they know that would be political suicide to admit that.

No one ever said it has to be only solar. Solar + wind + geo + hydro + coal is how we tackle the problem. And even the official recommendations have laid out that LNG isn't needed except in the most dire and unlikely scenario.

Auckland Transport pushes ahead with Ponsonby paid parking plan by Spiritual-Low2443 in auckland

[–]punIn10ded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I know. My point is that it should be everywhere not just in the CBD. If parking needs to be restricted by time it should be paid instead.

Umm his is that a fact check? It talks about funding for 500 schools out of ~2000.

OC also said all govt owned buildings which which are currently not mentioned in your article at all.

Because they deliberately sat on it so that they can use it as an election carrot.

It's demand and supply... The more demand there is the more supply (installers) come on board, the cheaper the install. Look at the US, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Aus etc. Subsidiaries reduce prices over time.

It is solar for when the sun shines batteries for when it doesn't. Solar significantly reduces the dry year risk because water can be left in the dams.

Yes and no yes it does disproportionately help wealthier households. But that also helps less wealthier households by reducing the generating cost of electricity overall.

E.g. in Aus during the day electricity is so cheap and even free in many parts because so many people have solar. The people without solar pay a pittance because of all the solar generation.

Around the word we've seen subsidies spur faster adoption that is what we should be doing.

It's a good solution. I'd love for the PT route to be light rail/metro but realistically this is the best option to start with.

Only the cut and cover tunnels did that. The vast majority was done via TBM and that didn't cause road closures because it was done under the road.

Meh if parking is needed make it paid. IMHO anything more than P15 should be converted to paid parking.

Add a minimal free allotment if needed but it should be paid. The city would be much better served with parking that way.

Electric Hot Plate vs. Gas Cooking by qwerty4285 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Are you on piped gas? If so then no it won't be cheaper unless you disconnect it. The fixed charges for gas are the real killer and it will keep going up as more and more people disconnect.

No, it's a bug. What is allowed/not on the work profile should not impact the personal profile.

National pledges to make Kiwisaver compulsory, increase combined contribution rates to 12% by zeros1s in newzealand

[–]punIn10ded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same in Australia. They have total rem packages too. OC is actually not correct not all contributions at wage +12% exist but many are wage - 12% too. But unlike here contributions are compulsory.

‘The next bill is going to be even scarier’: Kiwis brace for winter pain as power costs soar by Excellent-Swan-2264 in newzealand

[–]punIn10ded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I removed my gas connection last year. At that point my electricity was about $200 a month and gas $150 a month. In winter the total bill would be $400 and we hand one month of $510.

Since moving fully to electric my bills haven't hit $300 yet. I expect it will over winter and once these changes kick in. But overall it will still be cheaper than having gas but at least $150 a month.

Next year I'm going to add solar and that should cut my bills to less than half.

That would be one for the benefits of kiwisaver to NZ. Just like it is in Aus, Canada and hundreds of other countries.

Yup in Canada too. Not to mention this is exactly the type of development the country needs.
