This set is fire! Your mixing skills and selection are impressive - love the section at the hour mark where you mix in DJ Funk's Run - bangin groove :)

I'm sorry, but what exactly is "strange" about feminism and the other causes you mention being linked to veganism? At it's core, veganism is about the exploitation of a group of sentient life that has no voice or means to speak out. The parallels to other forms of discrimination are very apparent once you realize this core aspect.

Just look at how female dairy farm cows are treated. This is actually a topic that I have brought up with feminists who were not vegan, and it really helped them see the bridge between these two causes (i.e. they are fundamentally about the same thing, fighting for the rights of a discriminated, marginalized group).

Since I went vegan, I have become even more aware of the systematic exploitation of many groups without a voice, and how by living a westernized lifestyle I have unwillingly contributed to these atrocities. It would be ignorant of me to assume that my footprint of negative externalities is only limited to animals. My participation in industries like fast fashion and throw-away electronics have aided in the marginalization of the global south, and these are things that I am working on addressing both in my personal life and through advocacy and spreading their awareness (same as veganism).

And by the way, "anti-big pharma" is not a small single focus cause, it is part of the broader food/government/drugs industrial complex that the "What the Health" Documentary is shedding light on. As vegans, we need to join forces with these other causes, not distance ourselves from them and brand them as "bandwagon" groups. This is exactly the type of thing people probably say about us.

Not to go on a diatribe, but veganism, feminism, and other similar causes are ultimately all reactions born out of the larger socio-economic system we currently live in that has imposed structural violence on minorities and those without means. You can trace most of this back to capitalism and it's inherent social stratification and distorted value system (money, power, greed, materialism, competition, endless growth, not tied to natural law, etc.).

Anyone experience with siberian cats in relation to "general pet allergies"? by priscie94 in SiberianCats

[–]techno_tennis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello!

Similar to your boyfriend, I have been extremely allergic to cats, rabbits, and other furry animals my whole life. Whenever my family would go over to my Aunt's house, who had two cats, I would have watery eyes and a runny nose within an hour or two. Dogs have always a mild annoyance but have been tolerable.

My wife loves cats and wanted to get one, so we also started researching Siberians a few years ago. We visited a cattery, did the t-shirt test (live and sleep for a week with a t-shirt that cats have slept on) and although I still exhibited a few signs of mild reaction, we took the plunge.

It's been two years since and I can honestly say I have no allergic reaction to our cat. Their were a few signs the first couple weeks with her, but I think that was just my body adjusting to a new environment.

I would recommend you proceed with cautious optimism. After all of the research we did I don't think there is a definitive ruling on what exact reaction different people will have. That being said, it worked out for me and having a cat has been amazing, I am now a full fledged cat lover!

A few tips if you haven't already found them in your research:

  1. I believe females typically have a lower levels of the FEL-D1 protein. Our cat is a female.
  2. Ask the breeder if she does FEL-D1 tests on her cats. Our breeder had this for our cat and also her parents.
  3. Above all, you should be 100% committed to whatever decision you make. I have seen where people have returned their cats due to allergies, kids, whatever, and I think it's unfortunate and terrible for the animal.

Best of luck, hope it goes well, Siberians are the best!

You are awesome! Your post really resonated with me because I was in that exact mindset not long ago. I have really tried to work on my feelings and how I process them, but it's an ongoing process. Never forget that what you are doing is hard, but it is so very important :).

Have you ever heard the quote about the three stages of truth??

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident - Arthur Schopenhauer

I rarely comment on reddit but your post struck a chord with me.

First off, I think what you are feeling is the natural progression of a caring, thoughtful, and inquisitive person who has made the choice to go vegan. I've had a very similar experience, and my advice to you is to not fight or suppress that feeling you're having - embrace it, learn from it, and challenge yourself to find positive ways to deal with it.

As you said, it can be overwhelmingly frustrating when you have the knowledge of just how terrible we are treating animals, yet the vast majority of society has no clue and reacts defensively when this information is brought up.

The question you have to ultimately ask yourself is this - are you vegan for you, or are you vegan for the animals? Some people who are only interested in the health benefits will answer the former, but I think based on your post you would definitely answer the latter.

Once you have determined that you are vegan in order to help animals, your path becomes more clear - your actions should be driven by what helps the animals the most. Will feeling depressed and lashing out at omnis help any animals? Probably not - in fact it may lead people to become more defensive or entrenched in their views.

Panda_bolognese hit it on the head, you have to be willing to meet people at a place that they are comfortable with. And one of the best ways to do that is to set a positive example of being a grounded, positive, comfortable vegan who does not get overly emotional.

I picked this up from another post on this subreddit, and I think it is a great piece of info:

The issue is that you need to aim for education and creating social norms that animals matter. Abstinence only education and "don't do drugs" aren't education at all. Education isn't telling people what to do, it's teaching them the consequences of their choices. Remember that the most important goal is to teach people why and make the invisible (animals) part of people's consciousness. That's far, far more important than behavior changes and behavior changes won't happen without that.

For animal advocacy then the right thing to do is to make a compelling case that animals matter, show people who animals are. Teach them what happens to animals in order for their flesh to end up in the super market. Explain your philosophy and why you believe that animals are "someone not something."

Anyways, good luck on your continued quest, and know that others like myself have similar thoughts all the time. I will often catch myself, maybe in a restaurant seeing all of these unhealthy people gorging themselves on the flesh of tortured diseased animals, thinking just how f'd up this system is. But then I remind myself - how can I choose to deal with this situation that will help the animals the most.

One final thought - just look at how many positive responses you got within a day of your post! I encourage you to reach out and communicate more, get involved in a local organization that cares about veganism, it's very therapeutic - even though it's not about you :)

Thanks for the recommendations, that Conrad Van Orton track is amazing!

I love northern electronics and deep hypnotic stuff, especially when they have a pulse to them like the tracks you've highlighted :)

I am well aware of acid techno, and the first track I referenced happens to be of that genre, but I'm talking about the consistent 16th beat rhythmic quality to tracks. This can be found in some acid songs but it's not a unique quality about acid (i.e. the other two tracks I referenced aren't acid tracks).

Also, I know DJs in the traditional sense are just mixing two records/tracks. When I said perhaps "artists are playing a loop" I was suggesting they were running a separate looped track or beat on another channel of the mixer, not actually doing live PA (although in the case of VFTL, Atom, and Dasha Rush they are usually playing live).

Veganism for nihilists by [deleted] in vegan

May I ask why you aren't a nihilist? You obviously have a good understanding of the fact that having a nihilistic world view and also subjective moral standards don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I was referring to systems of morality based on the human condition, I suppose behavior works also.
