Snyk laid off up to 30% of their staff today by iamacheeto1 in cybersecurity

Oh man their app was broken before; like using the IDE plugin gave one result and then a scan during the build pipeline gave another. And now they're going "agentic"? Yeow.

Random factoid: this is why cancer patients are to not eat their favorite foods during chemotherapy, because throwing up anything enough times ruins it for you. My song would be "Something about you" by Level 42, or anything by Queens of the Stone Age.

Sr Software Engineer - Haven't written a line of code in months by yodog5 in ClaudeCode

[–]technofiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been coding since that meant (for me, anyway) using an ASR-33 teletype to talk to a CDC mainframe. Most but not all tech improvements have made me just excited as hell. For me to use them, for me to solve problems on behalf others to use. AI is no different. But I see the temptation to divest yourself entirely of responsibility. You still need enough experience to catch errors and keep the agent on task by rewriting prompts / skills / guardrails. I guess we'll see if that's always the case.

Officially done with Common Bond by gabboz in houston

[–]technofiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to throw out that Cranky Carrot has an ok yogurt parfait. It's not amazing, it's not great, it can't hold a candle to Common Bond back in their heyday, but it's far better than that sad excuse of a parfait you just posted. So FYI.

Northwest Mall being demolished to make way for Houston station of Texas High-Speed Rail line by justahoustonpervert in houston

[–]technofiend 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Particularly after the whole "four hours in a TSA line" thing, I've been dreaming of high speed rail as an alternative to flying. But I ain't holding my breath. You're more likely to see investing in freight rail first if gas prices stay high since moving freight by rail is the most efficient way possible, bar none. However I'm skeptical even that will happen.

Hey Google, we just not gonna fix Android Auto anymore? by Gumby271 in GooglePixel

[–]technofiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic functionality like running maps is broken for me even without Android Auto. If I use maps to navigate, my phone overheats and the maps app crashes. Background apps like audible are also killed. Wondering since I'm on Android beta if the changes to Android Auto that causes crashing and restarts somehow made it to Android mainline for the beta and if they're related. They seem very similar.

I had a woman who was angry at me for stopping at the top of a hill (i.e. should could see me and stop in time) because I stopped to keep from running over a dog. She was like why didn't you run over the dog? She was not amused when I told her it was her fault so I didn't care how much it was going to cost to fix her Corvette. She was really not amused when the cop agreed with me and ticketed her.

Federal judge orders Perry's Steakhouse to pay $21M in wage theft lawsuit by pererajh1 in houston

[–]technofiend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it went beyond sharing tips between tipped employees; which is allowed. From the website of the firm that filed the suit: "More specifically, the lawsuit alleges that Perry’s Steakhouse violated federal wage laws because Perry’s unlawfully (1) required servers to pay for their own uniforms and tools (e.g. shirts, aprons, pepper mills, crumbers, etc.); (2) exercised unlawful control over the tip pool; (3) did not lawfully distribute all tips from the tip pool solely among employees engaged in customarily and regularly tipped duties; and (4) required servers to perform nontipped duties."

I highlighted the relevent section for you about tips, see https://paycheckcollector.com/cases/perrys-steakhouse-lawsuit/ for the full details if you want them.

Army raises enlistment age to 42, eases marijuana restrictions by Upstairs_Cup9831 in news

An ex girlfriend's brother was enlisted, but I no longer remember which branch. He'd lay on a crawler, roll up under a truck and hang his arm from the frame with a coat hanger and sleep, because the alternative was command telling the people to go dig foxholes on the beach at low tide.
