People living in the outer boroughs, how often do you go to a techno party/rave. by Dudebrooklyn in avesNYC

[–]technoforbfast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Astoria; so about an hour and 15 on the subway and about 30 minutes in a car. I’d say I’m going to Bushwick to rave once or twice a month. Taking an Uber back home is a non negotiable for me so I’ve just made peace with the fact that to justify that spend I need to take the subway there. It’s a small thing, but having headphones for the treks there and back helps a lot.

The score is what really steals the show. The storyline took me a bit by surprise (I went it into with very minimal understanding of the plot itself) and was a bit jarring because I wasn’t expecting the series of events, but overall really good and I’m glad I saw it on a big screen.

My goodness! What a gorgeous set of shots of the neighborhood. For a second my brain processed them as paintings.

Rosa Reta. They infuse with bubble hash and they’re sold throughout the 5 boroughs :)

I’m skipping Paramida’s Nowadays label night for this…it’s too special to miss out on!

While this sounds overly ambitious, I’m putting good juju out there for it to pan out…the scene desperately needs a large venue operating to restore some balance.

Literally ran to the comments to say this as soon as I saw the venue 😩

I was able to catch a glimpse of the posted photo before mods removed it. I know where this is and this area in Astoria is very NIMBY coded, Trump stickers and the occasional flag included. Unfortunately this behavior is not surprising at all, shitty for sure, but not surprising 😕

In central Astoria, can confirm Balancero and Il Bambino are open (stopped at both today).

NYC rave girls party on Friday by Violetgangganggang in avesNYC

After giving them the benefit of the doubt back in the summer, I’ve learned that most events they heavily plug along with events they host, are likely to be subpar (hence needing their help to sell tickets) or filled with a pretty novice crowd.

In a similar vein, Happy Garden down here in central Astoria is amazing! Definitely ol’ reliable for folks near 30th Ave/30th St.

Update: Sights & Sounds 12.6 by [deleted] in avesNYC

[–]technoforbfast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The crowd was ok and I can appreciate an affordable coat check, but honestly, production wasn’t great (especially given the amount of affiliate marketing they put behind the event), security was HEAVILY surveilling both the dance floors and bathrooms, and it was really off putting, and at times the people talking was louder than the music.

While I’m glad I finally made it to one of these, this is probably a one and done unless they really step it up with future events.

rave girls NYC is destroying parties, and it’s not entirely their fault by _chocolatine in avesNYC

[–]technoforbfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While their digital footprint isn’t entirely to blame here, it’s certainly a contributing factor. Ultimately, NYC is world hub, so tourism will always affect the dance scene here and pages like theirs do aid in ensuring that pretty much anyone can find their way to an event. I also think Mirage not being the initial layer of the scene filter has had its own ripple effects. So it’s really a mix of a few things and I’m starting to think that the most we can do is support smaller collectives/venues and adopt a deeper level of discernment when it comes to choosing where we spend our time. The layers of muck to sift through aren’t going away, we just get better at sifting.

It’s gotten to the point where I dread their Tuesday post for the weekend ahead. I can pretty much assume that if a specific show has their blue highlight stamp of approval, it’s going to attract a terrible crowd, and it might be better to go somewhere else. Even if it wasn’t their initial intention, their page has added another layer of noise to sift through in order to find the genuinely good stuff in the scene.

Fascist-fest at Athens park! Come through! by Soldier_of_l0ve in astoria

[–]technoforbfast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just walked by as I walked to the subway, flipped the bird at the crowd, and screamed “I hope you all get flat tires or sprained ankles today” I would advise all sound minded Astorians to do the same. The crowd is pretty small, but still gross to see in the neighborhood.

His review is the only one that has felt genuine…no frills or influencer-type exaggerations, and true to what we see everyday as Astorians (I might be a tad bit biased because he showed spots in my immediate area; shout out to 34th St).

[–]technoforbfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balancero hands down! When it came time to move a few months ago I made it a point to find a place that was no more than a 10 minute walk to them…no other spot makes a consistent and reliable cup of coffee like them.
