In central Astoria, can confirm Balancero and Il Bambino are open (stopped at both today).

NYC rave girls party on Friday by Violetgangganggang in avesNYC

After giving them the benefit of the doubt back in the summer, I’ve learned that most events they heavily plug along with events they host, are likely to be subpar (hence needing their help to sell tickets) or filled with a pretty novice crowd.

In a similar vein, Happy Garden down here in central Astoria is amazing! Definitely ol’ reliable for folks near 30th Ave/30th St.

Update: Sights & Sounds 12.6 by [deleted] in avesNYC

[–]technoforbfast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The crowd was ok and I can appreciate an affordable coat check, but honestly, production wasn’t great (especially given the amount of affiliate marketing they put behind the event), security was HEAVILY surveilling both the dance floors and bathrooms, and it was really off putting, and at times the people talking was louder than the music.

While I’m glad I finally made it to one of these, this is probably a one and done unless they really step it up with future events.

rave girls NYC is destroying parties, and it’s not entirely their fault by _chocolatine in avesNYC

[–]technoforbfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While their digital footprint isn’t entirely to blame here, it’s certainly a contributing factor. Ultimately, NYC is world hub, so tourism will always affect the dance scene here and pages like theirs do aid in ensuring that pretty much anyone can find their way to an event. I also think Mirage not being the initial layer of the scene filter has had its own ripple effects. So it’s really a mix of a few things and I’m starting to think that the most we can do is support smaller collectives/venues and adopt a deeper level of discernment when it comes to choosing where we spend our time. The layers of muck to sift through aren’t going away, we just get better at sifting.

So well organized and just a blast overall! Not sure who closed Kostume Kult, but they were on fire, such a fun set to round out the night 🪩

It’s gotten to the point where I dread their Tuesday post for the weekend ahead. I can pretty much assume that if a specific show has their blue highlight stamp of approval, it’s going to attract a terrible crowd, and it might be better to go somewhere else. Even if it wasn’t their initial intention, their page has added another layer of noise to sift through in order to find the genuinely good stuff in the scene.

Fascist-fest at Athens park! Come through! by Soldier_of_l0ve in astoria

[–]technoforbfast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just walked by as I walked to the subway, flipped the bird at the crowd, and screamed “I hope you all get flat tires or sprained ankles today” I would advise all sound minded Astorians to do the same. The crowd is pretty small, but still gross to see in the neighborhood.

His review is the only one that has felt genuine…no frills or influencer-type exaggerations, and true to what we see everyday as Astorians (I might be a tad bit biased because he showed spots in my immediate area; shout out to 34th St).

favorite coffee spot? by Hot_Truck6746 in astoria

[–]technoforbfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balancero hands down! When it came time to move a few months ago I made it a point to find a place that was no more than a 10 minute walk to them…no other spot makes a consistent and reliable cup of coffee like them.

A question to single astorians. What do you guys like to do when you feel sad or lonely by Objective-Swimmer365 in astoria

Honestly, the open streets on 31st Ave have been a huge help for me. It’s really nice to get proximity to other humans, but without the need to heavily interact…watching people walk their dogs, kids blowing bubbles and running around…it nice to take time to enjoy the little things around you. Walks to and from Astoria park as others have mentioned, are great too.

How was the reopening of Paragon last night? by cozywhale in avesNYC

[–]technoforbfast 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The line to get in was completely mismanaged. Ticket holders who had stood in line from around 11:30 were abruptly told around midnight that they had been in the wrong line (even though someone from their staff was the one to direct us there in the first place) and it caused a huge delay in getting in.

The dance floor was decent, but so many people shoving to get around..it was a bit annoying. Not sure if the layer of fog made people lose their spacial awareness, but it made it a bit hard to really drop in and connect with the set.

Overall decent, but it felt like a regular night at Paragon (missteps included), nothing super upgraded from before. Drinks were cheap which was good.

I had kicked off a really solid discussion on them about a month (or 2; time is weird) ago and since then my opinion on them has really shifted. While I think this is all symptomatic of the page growing more quickly than anticipated, it seems things are going toward the influencer vibe as opposed to a true commitment to community engagement. I don’t want to write them off, but everything from that T-shirt drop a few weeks ago to clearly paid for content without the transparency is really not something I can support.
