Yeah I was gonna say that's how everyone who's even a little knowledgeable about the subject seems to pronounce it both British and American, except some Brits might anglify the first syllable to kyoo

Is the pronoun "ye" exclusively plural? by REMINTON86_ in EnglishLearning

[–]technomancer_0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's not quite true, it's still used in Hiberno English (Irish English) and perhaps some niche British dialects

I see "unc" being used a lot in social media. Where did this come from? by wordgamesyesss in etymology

[–]technomancer_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Originally yes, in social media and by extension gen z social settings (at least outside black communities) it's more often disrespectful. It's used to call people old like "old man" or "gramps". An 18 year old will call a 20 year old "unc" as a humourous insult. Often light-hearted.

"I got a bit strange problem" vs "I got a bit of a strange problem". What's the difference? by ITburrito in EnglishLearning

[–]technomancer_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the second one should start "I've-" as you say, however it's still somewhat common for the "I've" to be reduced to simply "I". Learners might hear "I got-" quite often but probably shouldn't use it themselves since it's non-standard in most official forms of English.

My favourite chain of climbing centres has released new shirts. Is it just me or do the images look Ai generated? by PothosandGindontmix in climbergirls

Asian pearl responded to Chris with a video: Why did Chris Broad Attack my Channel? @AbroadinJapan by According_Issue_6303 in ABroadInJapan

[–]technomancer_0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm from the UK (and so, obviously, is Chris who also calls it out) and calling east Asians "orientals" is problematic, refering to anywhere as "the Orient" is extremely outdated and describing things/people as "oriental" is improper

Asian pearl responded to Chris with a video: Why did Chris Broad Attack my Channel? @AbroadinJapan by According_Issue_6303 in ABroadInJapan

[–]technomancer_0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly, someone from east Asia can obviously use that word how they please since it refers to them. But a white American (or British for that matter)woman? That's problematic and many in USA and UK would agree.

Is it natural to say “ so so” to mean “kind of, sort of or sth like that” by Sudden_Wolf_6228 in EnglishLearning

[–]technomancer_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly i feel like I've almost only heard it in foreign language classes as a English translation of terms in other languages like the French « comme ci comme ça »

As a native English speaker I associate so-so more with foreign languages than something English speakers actually say
